{"id":10213,"date":"2024-11-15T15:02:58","date_gmt":"2024-11-15T15:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/15\/how-a-toxic-mix-of-antisemitism-racism-and-xenophobia-culminated-in-amsterdam-violence\/"},"modified":"2024-11-15T15:02:58","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T15:02:58","slug":"how-a-toxic-mix-of-antisemitism-racism-and-xenophobia-culminated-in-amsterdam-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/15\/how-a-toxic-mix-of-antisemitism-racism-and-xenophobia-culminated-in-amsterdam-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"How a toxic mix of antisemitism, racism and xenophobia culminated in Amsterdam violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr7iwg000s26qn48k63x6o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Anger, fear and anxiety are still simmering in Amsterdam.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon00063b6m52sq9qtt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last week, Israeli soccer fans were attacked in the streets, Palestinian flags ripped off walls and antisemitic<strong> <\/strong>slurs yelled during riots.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon00073b6mk0bdmesp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While the Dutch capital now feels calm, residents and legislators fear that tensions still haven\u2019t peaked.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon00093b6mziz54cte@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAnd I don\u2019t even think, I\u2019m sorry to say, that we have reached our boiling point, because the root causes of the tensions going on have not been addressed.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000a3b6mqglninb5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Khan said the biggest underlying issue for his constituents is the Dutch government\u2019s complicity in funneling weapons and money to Israel\u2019s war in Gaza. The Netherlands\u2019 Muslim community is roughly 1 million people strong, and many have been vocal in their support of Palestinians.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000b3b6mft2amitq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cNext to that, we have a far-right government, which is hell-bent on blaming societal problems on minorities, especially Muslims,\u201d Khan added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000c3b6mj64u6joe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the timeline of how tensions ignited in Amsterdam is different depending on which community you ask.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000d3b6mjtfntpl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some residents argue the spark was just last week, when Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans pulled down Palestinian flags, vandalized taxis and paraded through the streets yelling racist slogans, including \u201cf**k the Arabs,\u201d and celebrating Israeli military attacks in Gaza.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000e3b6m9hf5dyqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            What followed were violent attacks on the Israeli fans, with several people injured and five receiving hospital treatment. The city\u2019s mayor said last week that rioters moved in small groups in \u201chit-and-run\u201d antisemitic attacks, searching the city and targeting Maccabi supporters.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000f3b6mgq594tjv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Monday, a tram in west Amsterdam was set ablaze and police officers were pelted with stones. In video circulating on social media, the small group of rioters can be heard yelling an antisemitic slur. Police said Tuesday they had arrested 68 people across the city in total in relation to the riots, including 10 Israelis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000g3b6mlaav3phn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Other Amsterdam residents say a fire has been kindling in the city for 15 to 20 years, with the rise of the far-right, and an increase in antisemitism and xenophobia throughout Europe.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000i3b6mrh8c1nhi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI feel some people are underplaying antisemitism by not mentioning it even or saying that because of the Maccabi hooligans that the violence was justified, or that the violence was only directed at the Maccabi hooligans,\u201d Garmy said. He added that fear is palpable among Jewish residents here, especially after last Thursday when social media posts emerged where people discussed a \u201chunt on Jews,\u201d according to a report from Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000j3b6my1mpt2fs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Constituents and friends have told Garmy  that they\u2019re now afraid to wear a Star of David or kippah in public, and some have changed their names on taxi and ride-sharing apps to avoid being identifiably Jewish.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000k3b6mlbu8khvc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBut saying that, I do feel that there are leaders, for instance, the Israeli prime minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) who is overplaying it for his own internal politics, and also the far-right leader here, Geert Wilders, is also overplaying it,\u201d the city councilor added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000l3b6m9x3wyhle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mayor Halsema and other local authorities have also received criticism from Muslim and pro-Palestinian communities for failing to highlight the racist and threatening actions of Maccabi supporters in the immediate aftermath of the violence, and giving what they see as a skewed version of events.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000n3b6myzky6ple@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last November, a month after the Israel-Gaza war began, far-right populist Wilders and his Freedom Party (PVV) won the most seats in Dutch parliament \u2013 a shock for many people given Wilders\u2019 anti-Islam, anti-immigration and anti-European Union manifesto.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000o3b6m141qonju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Wednesday, Wilders requested a lawmakers\u2019 debate on the violence against Maccabi fans, and his party floated the idea of revoking Dutch citizenship for certain people involved in the attacks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000q3b6mg2o0uovz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on Israelis, Netanyahu urged Dutch authorities to act firmly, and even said he would organize evacuation flights. Senior Israeli officials said the violence recalled \u201cpogrom\u201d attacks of previous centuries on European Jews. But in Amsterdam, many local Jewish officials as well as the mayor have urged against using that description.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000r3b6m6kyf1mqh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat certain politicians are doing on the right wing, what Netanyahu and Israeli politicians are doing\u2026 is only throwing oil on the fire,\u201d Stranders said, adding that certain people in the Jewish community using charged rhetoric has also increased fear. \u201cYou\u2019re only frightening your own community.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000s3b6m253y59fx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There are about 40,000 Jewish people in the Netherlands \u2013 far fewer than before World War II \u2013 and it\u2019s not a singular community. There are secular Jews, orthodox Jews, Israeli Jews, those from the wider diaspora and others. Stranders said a key focus now is getting people within this disparate group to agree to dial down the tension.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000t3b6mgbyqxgwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As far as antisemitism goes, some comes from the far-right, he said, but antisemitism from the far-left and Muslim communities can\u2019t be ignored either.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000u3b6mfj69caq0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat you see is when the critique that people have on policy of Israel and how they conduct their war \u2013 sometimes that critique is addressed to Jewish people and even in a hostile way,\u201d he said. Stranders noted that the pro-Palestinian movement sometimes has a \u201cblind eye\u201d for how that makes the Jewish community feel, in a city where Jewish life has constantly been under threat, and where synagogues and schools historically required security protection.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000v3b6msybi0tev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMaybe first it started as criticizing Israel, but then it becomes antisemitism,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000w3b6mafa0bzn8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At a pro-Palestinian protest on Wednesday, which went ahead in Amsterdam\u2019s Dam Square despite the police banning demonstrations in the area, some of the chants were distinctly anti-war. \u201cStop the bombing,\u201d protesters in the primarily young, left-wing crowd yelled, as officers eventually forcibly cleared them from the square and moved them to a park where protest was permitted.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000x3b6mrc10flll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI\u2019m here because of the bombing of the children and the women in Gaza,\u201d said Said Alawi, an older man standing off to the side before police asked people to disperse.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000y3b6m8xub4lj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alawi lives in Amsterdam but grew up in Morocco. \u201cI\u2019m asking to free these people, to free Palestine, that is all.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon000z3b6mu9g9rpvx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But other chants, like \u201cf**k Israel,\u201d were distinctly more hostile.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon00103b6m1m3b21ru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Faith leaders in the Muslim community are working alongside police and city hall officials to encourage de-escalation and even speak to youth at protests.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3hr8fon00113b6ml88kmwn6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A local Imam and the leader of Moroccan mosques in the Noord-Holland region, Abdelaziz Chandoudi, is holding a dialogue with taxi drivers in Amsterdam on Friday to try to ease tensions.
