vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000m3b6mby0s3o4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Duterte\u2019s fighting talk comes after the former president made a stark admission to the Senate inquiry last month during his first public appearance in the investigations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000n3b6mgjpsyfxg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Before an audience of millions watching on television and online, Duterte told lawmakers he hired a \u201cdeath squad\u201d of gangsters to kill criminals while mayor of Davao City, 600 miles (965 kilometers) from the capital Manila.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000o3b6mk4tqnp26@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI can make the confession now if you want,\u201d Duterte said. \u201cI had a death squad of seven, but they were not police, they were gangsters.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000p3b6mdik86fdj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But in the same hearing, Duterte distanced himself from claims he directly ordered his national police chiefs to carry out extrajudicial killings during his time as president. He also said he told police officers to \u201cencourage\u201d suspects to fight back, as legal cover for the killings.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000q3b6mwfxtuoak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Duterte\u2019s attempts to fend off criticism come as his daughter fights calls for her impeachment over claims she misappropriated funds from both the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000r3b6mhtvgesnd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lawmakers in September deferred the approval of budgets to her office as allied political clans at odds with the Dutertes demanded more transparency and accountability over her public spending.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000s3b6mhuan6mkk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Heydarian, the analyst, said Duterte\u2019s decision to run for Davao mayor marks an attempt to keep the family politically relevant, and is likely an acknowledgment that he may not have what it takes to run for a seat in the national legislature.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000t3b6mfx1s4ip5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            His return to Davao may also serve to support his sons \u2013 incumbent Davao mayor Sebastian Duterte and congressman Paolo Duterte \u2013 who are contesting the Davao election but are viewed as \u201cout of touch\u201d with locals, Heydarian said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32akcw8000u3b6mem1ubvjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s always foolish to underestimate the Dutertes given their almost fanatical base in certain parts of the country, but I think it would also not be foolish to think that the Dutertes are also now facing an existential crisis,\u201d Heydarian said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm32akyff000z3b6mxer1vowd@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"from-unity-to-animosity\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        From unity to animosity<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32ak1oc000g3b6mgohxmktz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Marcos-Duterte alliance was always an unlikely one. But major cracks appeared in January, when Rodrigo Duterte called Marcos a \u201cdrug addict\u201d and threatened that the president could be removed from power.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj100143b6mda0wl96t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Months later, Vice President Duterte-Carpio resigned as education secretary, a departure seen by analysts as a sign that the relationship between the country\u2019s top leaders was beyond repair.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj100153b6m6l24h27z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In October, Duterte-Carpio aired a litany of grievances against the president in a two-hour livestreamed press conference, saying she \u201cwanted to chop his head off.\u201d She said the Marcoses \u201cused her\u201d to propel themselves to victory in the 2022 election.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj100163b6mzrpl9t9u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At one point, Duterte-Carpio spoke about Ferdinand Marcos Sr. \u2013 the late patriarch and longtime dictator. She said she had become so incensed by the attacks on her that she wanted to dig up his body and \u201cthrow it in the West Philippine Sea.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj100173b6moidepsdy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Despite this, Duterte-Carpio told reporters she does not regret running for vice president under Marcos. \u201cThey can drag me to hell,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd when they get there, I will be the president of hell.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj100183b6mu2z155wf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Marcos insisted he thought he and the vice president were friends.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj100193b6m2qmh945i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI always thought that we were,\u201d he told reporters on the sidelines of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference in September. \u201cBut maybe I was deceived.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj1001a3b6mcycvkrg7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            His son, Sandro Marcos, entered the fray, saying in a rare statement that he \u201ccannot remain silent\u201d as the vice president \u201cthreatens to exhume a former president and behead an incumbent one.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj1001b3b6mnr9q41n1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At the heart of the feud is geopolitics, specifically how the Philippines should balance its relationships with China and the US, according to Ranjit Singh Rye, an assistant professor of political science at the University of the Philippines.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj1001c3b6mleso2lbl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The incumbent Marcos administration has leaned more closely toward Washington \u2013 the Philippines\u2019 oldest and closest ally \u2013 particularly strengthening its military alliance, in a move that reverses Duterte\u2019s pro-Beijing tilt for investment in infrastructure.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj1001d3b6m3hwudsy8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cozying up to China is believed to have led to the nefarious proliferation of the gambling and online scams industry, with alleged links to Chinese organized crime, under Duterte\u2019s administration.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj1001e3b6mdwymhd5v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The leaders\u2019 split views on the Philippines\u2019 geopolitical standing ultimately divided the Marcos-Duterte alliance, according to Rye.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32aluj1001f3b6m1pt30x0h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe differences are irreconcilable because they both represent a different vision of where the Philippines needs to go and how the Philippines needs to be governed,\u201d Rye said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm32alykc001h3b6mvh7brtuq@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"home-turf-survival\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Home turf survival<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm32al80d00123b6m16z6qh5j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When Duterte filed his candidacy in Davao, he was met by a roaring crowd of supporters. \u201cI want to serve you.
