Forty-eight other men on trial were found guilty of aggravated rape, with two guilty of sexual assault.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000j3b6mnkp17gnf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The trial \u2013 which has shocked France and has pushed the country to examine a culture struggling with pervasive misogyny and systemic sexual assault \u2013 has galvanized women to demand a change in the way it approaches gender-based violence.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000k3b6mi813sv3m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            They were able to do so because of the unusual decision Gis\u00e8le Pelicot took in waving her anonymity to make the trial public \u2013 an act many have called heroic. For months, Gis\u00e8le faced her abusers in court, allowing the world to see the horrors that she\u2019d endured by her husband and dozens of other rapists for over a decade.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000l3b6mw4nvsoj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Under French law, Gis\u00e8le could have asked for the trial to be kept behind closed doors. Instead, she asked for it be held in public, saying she hoped it would help other women speak up and show other victims of sexual assault and rape that they have nothing to be ashamed of.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000n3b6m9mjutnot@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Speaking after the verdicts were handed down outside the courtoom in Avignon, southern France, Gis\u00e8le underscored her solidarity with other sexual assault survivors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000o3b6mh3tbirgf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think of all the unknown victims of stories which often unfold in the shadows. I want you to know we share the same fight,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000p3b6ms2ntvc7o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The 72-year-old also stressed that she \u201chad never regretted\u201d decision to go public, saying the messages received from supporters gave her the \u201cstrength\u201d needed to keep going.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000t3b6mrsgcjlzw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While Dominique Pelicot received the maximum sentence allowed in France for aggravated rape, others who visited the Pelicot home multiple times, like Romain V., and Charly A., recieved 15- and 13-year-old sentences respectively. Many of the other rapists received shorter sentences than prosecutors expected \u2013 including a few who walked free with suspended sentences.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000u3b6mq0nfrfw1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some gasped inside the courtroom as Jacques C, who was handed a 5-year suspended prison sentence, was read out.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vdgrij001o3b6msbiv6nkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dominique Pelicot\u2019s lawyer, Beatrice Zavarro told reporters Thursday that his legal team is considering lodging an appeal, but has not yet made a decision, adding that she felt her client had been made the scapegoat of the trial.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hww000z3b6m8a5wxfhe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But evidence shows how central Dominique was in orchestrating the crimes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00103b6mk2pgd7w7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He recruited the men to rape his then wife on the now-defunct Coco.fr \u201cdating site\u201d for years, using the chatroom called \u201cwithout her knowledge,\u201d where he would exchange pictures of an unconscious Gis\u00e8le before moving to Skype and text messages to arrange the meeting with his accomplices.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00113b6m6tieu0n9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gis\u00e8le testified that she was completely unaware of her husband\u2019s actions. Over time, the frequent sedation and sexual abuse began to take a physical toll. Her husband accompanied her on several doctor\u2019s visits during which she complained about memory loss and pelvic pain, according to court documents.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00123b6m5hcu0vmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It was only after Dominique was arrested in a local supermarket in September 2020 for filming up the skirts of female customers, for which he was convicted, that his web of crimes came to light. Pelicot received an eight-month suspended prison sentence for this offense.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vdgye9001q3b6md806eysq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Whilst investigating the upskirting, police officers confiscated his hard drive, laptop and phones and found hundreds of images and videos of Gis\u00e8le being raped, opening one of the worst sex offense cases in modern French history.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00133b6m8ibomoce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Towards the beginning of the trial, Gis\u00e8le questioned her rapists, many of whom said they thought that a husband\u2019s consent sufficed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00143b6mou8ymsoc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cRape is rape,\u201d she said in court in November. \u201cWhen you walk into a bedroom and see a motionless body, at what point (do you decide) not to react\u2026why did you not leave immediately to report it to the police?\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00153b6miduyvecv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She said she would never forgive her former husband.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00163b6m8ycjn9we@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The trial has concluded. But its outcome has left many angry and disillusioned, including the children of Dominique and Gis\u00e8le Pelicot. They say such sentencing fails to acknowledge the gravity of the rapists\u2019 crimes and underscores France\u2019s substandard approach to tackling sexualized violence.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4vd4hwx00193b6m14akjthq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe have a really problematic justice system when it comes to trying cases of this nature. Women in France simply don\u2019t trust the French justice system,\u201d she said, pointing to the fact that only 10% of victims of rape even report the crime to the justice system.
