Some fear a wider crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uxw09e000m2cqaabqyd43l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Transgender dancer Jin Xing\u2019s ascent to the upper echelons of Chinese show business is extraordinary in a nation where it has become increasingly difficult for LGBTQ+ people to live openly.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu00083b6m4uym06sa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The 57-year-old has been a transgender icon in China for years, admired by some of the country\u2019s most marginalized as a rare example of both success and acceptance, even within officialdom.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu00093b6mvhta872j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But a recent series of sudden and unexplained cancelations by local authorities of appearances by her dance troupe has sparked fears Chinese leader Xi Jinping\u2019s authoritarian drive is ensnaring the country\u2019s most prominent openly transgender personality.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000a3b6ms7vdnmtx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Transgender people in China often face social stigma and institutional discrimination, facing issues in looking for work or simply walking down the street without being stared at.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000b3b6m1t1ym1t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Jin, however, has managed to carve out a decades-long career that defies the norm. She sells out concerts, hosts TV talk shows and boasts 13.6 million followers on her Weibo social media account. More remarkably, she has managed over the years to secure the endorsement of Communist Party officials.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000c3b6ms7ct3s91@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Chinese state media have called her one of \u201c10 legendary figures of Chinese modern dance\u201d and frequently publish glowing profiles.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000d3b6mz04i3sh6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For other transgender people, she embodies the hope that one day China may become progressive enough to accept them, just as it embraces her.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000f3b6mhavvoz0a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI find her very admirable,\u201d he said, speaking under an alias for fear of retribution from the Chinese authorities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000g3b6mcugig691@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But signs suggest official acceptance of Jin could now be waning.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5261b1z00073b6mdxhs81i2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Chinese authorities have ramped up ideological control over what they consider the undue influence of Western values, including a crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000i3b6m2trtsvw0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Late last year, authorities in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou canceled her Jin Xing Dance Theater\u2019s show, citing insufficient documents. Subsequently, venues in other parts of the country also dropped her shows, without explanation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000j3b6manidtm0l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some from the transgender community are now worried that Chinese authorities are trying to send a message.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000k3b6m1gcmlmml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sam Winter, an associate professor who specializes in Asian transgender issues at Curtin University in Australia, said Jin managed to rally support from the authorities because of her years of achievement \u2013 which was hard for officials to dismiss, and began at a time when China seemed to be liberalizing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy33wu000l3b6meuy09xxf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBut things seem to have changed. Maybe the earlier shift towards a more liberal atmosphere was the problem,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4uy3gg0000o3b6md73tfjsi@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"brush-with-authorities\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Brush with authorities<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uxw4qm00003b6mc4fyppxd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            China decriminalized homosexuality in 1997, before removing it from its official list of mental disorders in 2001.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli000t3b6m35lgxuki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Until a few years ago, the LGBTQ+ community was still allowed to hold an annual Pride parade in Shanghai and share snippets of their lives on chat groups run by university students on social media WeChat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli000u3b6m2enp8r7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the movement has faced a mounting crackdown under Xi, who has adopted a more authoritarian, socially conservative and patriarchal vision for the country.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli000v3b6mwr04bno8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Support groups have been forced to disband, with activists harassed by police, Pride parades canceled and films and TV shows featuring same-sex themes banned.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli000w3b6m1x4cncdo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Jin\u2019s brush with Chinese authorities began in late October when the Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism in Guangzhou canceled her show at the city\u2019s opera house slated for December.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli000x3b6mrsyh45m2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The show was an adaptation of \u201cSunrise,\u201d a classic play by renowned Chinese playwright Cao Yu, which Jin\u2019s troupe had been staging nationwide for the past four years, she wrote in a now-deleted Weibo post criticizing the cancellation, state-affiliated online news portal The Paper reported.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli000y3b6m55qiz44d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She went on to demand the official in charge give detailed reasons for the cancellation, warning in the post: \u201cPlease don\u2019t abuse your public power!\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli000z3b6mf69rlpmn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Direct challenges to Chinese authorities are rare and risky. After her post, Jin\u2019s subsequent shows in the cities of Foshan, Suzhou and the commercial hub of Shanghai \u2013 where her troupe is based \u2013 were also called<strong> <\/strong>off by the venues without explanation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli00113b6m9a83ohvm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a recent interview with France 24, the dancer said she was puzzled by the authorities\u2019 decision given how she had been allowed to perform \u201cfor 40 years in China.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli00123b6m7b4c4m1h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some Weibo users have speculated that Jin may have crossed a red line by holding a rainbow flag that read \u201cLove is Love,\u201d during an earlier show.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli00133b6mwvbs60wl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Chinese authorities view the rainbow flag \u2013 a global symbol of the LGBTQ+ community \u2013 with suspicion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli00143b6mkzpz4feb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Jin acknowledged the political sensitivity involved during the France 24 interview but said she only waved the flag to comfort the fan who passed it to her.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli00153b6mdvdwf9wk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis thing happened in January (2024). After that I performed all over the country and had no issues at all,\u201d she added. \u201cEven today, I am still questioning why.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3xli00173b6mf76tv6b8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Online discussion on China\u2019s heavily censored internet has been split over Jin\u2019s cancelations, from more nationalist rhetoric describing LGBTQ+ issues as some sort of foreign conspiracy, to others expressing sympathy and admiration for Jin.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4uy41jz00193b6m4qidrrq7@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"from-military-born-to-chinas-oprah\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        From military born to \u2018China\u2019s Oprah\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy3ly2000r3b6mv2agl8m8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Part of what made Jin\u2019s rise extraordinary was that she was born into a military family. Her father was an army officer and her mother is a Japanese interpreter.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001e3b6m7vpz4ql2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After realizing her passion for dance, her parents sent her to one of the best dance schools run by the People\u2019s Liberation Army at the time, according to an interview she gave to state-affiliated online news platform Shine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001f3b6mcmo04a0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That meant that Jin not only received rigorous ballet training but also did tough military drills from the age of nine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001g3b6ml9mdkoaa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            During her teens, she won dance awards as she rose through the military ranks. She was considered a \u201cnational property,\u201d according to Shine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001h3b6mvf21fxpo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 1987, she moved to New York to study modern dance on a scholarship and subsequently worked as a choreographer and dancer in Rome and Brussels, before eventually returning to China, where she underwent gender-affirming surgery at the age of 26.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001i3b6m0ir3tajw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The procedure left her left leg paralyzed for months, she told China Daily.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001j3b6m84nrqyv2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Jin bounced back and founded Jin Xing Dance Theatre in 1999.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001k3b6mxez5vtt4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Not only did she push boundaries as a transgender woman, she also popularized modern dance in China.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001l3b6mrjff21h3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As her fame rose over the years, she was invited to host talk shows and soon became known for her straight-talking humor with guests.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001m3b6m7boh4lkt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Hollywood Reporter dubbed her the \u201cOprah of China\u201d and Jin was able to walk the fine line of providing frank discussion without upsetting central authorities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4ed1001n3b6m1rvtrx7c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI am myself and represent only myself. I will always be Jin Xing and it has nothing to do with gender,\u201d she wrote in a recent post on Weibo.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm4uy4hlf001p3b6mcupp4bza@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"struggle-for-transgender-people-in-china\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Struggle for transgender people in China<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy48nr001c3b6myi1ftw75@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While her life has been celebrated as a success by China\u2019s transgender community, it\u2019s a far cry from many people\u2019s lived experience.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l001x3b6mu5wmgn3r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cyan said he felt like he would never be accepted and had to hide his identity.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l001y3b6m8rmu3uiy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn mainland China you feel like a street rat. You can never tell anyone you\u2019re transgender wherever you go,\u201d he recalled.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l001z3b6m3r7xnfuj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He moved to Canada two years after undergoing a gender-affirming mastectomy \u2013 also known as top surgery.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l00203b6me3085bud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBoth my parents and I agreed that my life as a trans person in China was going to be quite difficult,\u201d he said, adding many of his transgender friends also struggled to find employment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l00213b6mnqllejrc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gender-affirming surgery is expensive and hard to find in China, Cyan said, and patients face significant hurdles.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l00223b6msreh9ql9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Even if money is not an issue, hospitals offering such services are limited and pre-requisites are harsh. For example, the person must have parental consent, regardless of age, and have no criminal record. For many, it is already a non-starter given their parents will never approve.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l00233b6mjiofilv9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At the same time, undergoing a full gender affirmation procedure, including the reconstruction of the genitalia, is the only way a person can change their gender on identity documents in China.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l00253b6mxqi2jz7r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cDuring the day, they\u2019re men. At night, they become women after work, without telling their families,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm4uy4w9l00263b6m9jlgjvp2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI know some of my friends wouldn\u2019t dare go out during the day and only go to bars in the evening.
