Now he\u2019s returning to South America as his rival prepares for inauguration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h60k7f001n26p1e757b82h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Venezuela\u2019s exiled former presidential candidate, Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia, returns to South America Friday in a show of defiance as Caracas prepares to inaugurate current President Nicolas Maduro, who has been in office since 2013.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o800083b6mhd1o33xu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s first stop: a meeting with Argentina\u2019s far-right President Javier Milei in Buenos Aires on Saturday. Milei has been a vocal critic of the Venezuelan regime, calling Maduro a \u201ccriminal\u201d after Venezuela expelled Argentina\u2019s diplomats in the aftermath of the contentious election, which was marred with allegations of vote rigging.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o8000a3b6mklzgtsal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It is unclear where else Gonz\u00e1lez plans on going during his tour; he has previously pledged to return to Venezuela to inaugurate his own government.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o8000b3b6miwh0mrlc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The former diplomat fled the country in September and sought asylum in Spain after a warrant was issued for his arrest by Venezuela\u2019s public prosecutor\u2019s office, amid a crackdown on the country\u2019s opposition movement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o8000c3b6mz1tfctii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The warrant capped off a fractious few months, which saw Venezuela\u2019s National Electoral Council (CNE), a body stacked with Maduro allies, formally declare the longtime strongman the winner of the July 28 election -\u2013 without providing voting tallies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o8000d3b6mm38ksx7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The official results attracted widespread skepticism from abroad as the opposition insisted that it had won, releasing tens of thousands of voting tallies gathered from across the country, that they said proved Gonz\u00e1lez won by a landslide.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o8000e3b6mc6vnyn21@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The United States and Argentina, among others, have gone on to recognize Gonz\u00e1lez as Venezuela\u2019s rightful president-elect.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o8000f3b6mk4ix4gkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Maduro has repeatedly dismissed claims that the vote was stolen, and says he is ready to begin a new term on January 10.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5h640o8000g3b6m8aub6b28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For Gonz\u00e1lez, returning to Venezuela would be filled with risk.
