Trump and other Republicans have lambasted Zuckerberg and Meta for what they view as censorship of right-wing voices.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mfxidk0000356mgy1xg4zn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cFact checkers have been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they\u2019ve created,\u201d Zuckerberg said in a video announcing the new policy Tuesday. \u201cWhat started as a movement to be more inclusive has increasingly been used to shut down opinions and shut out people with different ideas, and it\u2019s gone too far.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mh29xl000q356m15zxj8ub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Zuckerberg, however, acknowledged a \u201ctradeoff\u201d in the new policy, noting more harmful content will appear on the platform as a result of the content moderation changes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mfeb9p00003b6mdbzvs5fs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meta\u2019s newly appointed Chief of Global Affairs Joel Kaplan told Fox on Tuesday that Meta\u2019s partnerships with third-party fact checkers were \u201cwell intentioned at the outset but there\u2019s just been too much political bias in what they choose to fact check and how.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mfhm9b00083b6my6k5qk2v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The announcement comes amid a broader apparent ideological shift to the right within Meta\u2019s top ranks, and as Zuckerberg seeks to improve his relationship with Trump before the president-elect takes office later this month. Just one day earlier, Meta announced Trump ally and UFC CEO Dana White would join its board, along with two other new directors. Meta has also said it will donate $1 million to Trump\u2019s inaugural fund, and that Zuckerberg wants to take an \u201cactive role\u201d in tech policy discussions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mfeqdn00023b6m1u26s3kp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kaplan, a prominent Republican who was elevated to the company\u2019s top policy job last week, acknowledged that the Tuesday announcement is directly related to the changing administration.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mfr2ut000e3b6m5a4q5htr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He said that there\u2019s \u201cno question that there has been a change over the last four years. We saw a lot of societal and political pressure, all in the direction of more content, moderation more censorship, and we\u2019ve got a real opportunity. Now, we\u2019ve got a new administration, and a new president coming in who are big defenders of free expression, and that makes a difference.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm5mgz5u1000n356mt8xirz3z@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-significant-reversal\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A significant reversal<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mfjofb000c3b6mltzywm1r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The moderation changes mark a stunning reversal in how Meta handles false and misleading claims on its platforms.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mg2vlx000m3b6m941i5e4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2016, the company launched an independent fact-checking program, in the wake of claims that it had failed to stop foreign actors from leveraging its platforms to spread disinformation and sow discord among Americans. In the years since, it continued to grapple with the spread of controversial content on its platform, such as misinformation about elections, anti-vaccination stories, violence and hate speech.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mg9ozw0001356mkuj8e17c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The company built up safety teams, introduced automated programs to filter out or reduce the visibility of false claims and instituted a sort of independent Supreme Court for tricky moderation decisions, known as the Oversight Board.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mfr9ta000h3b6mod3gp4tv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But now, Zuckerberg is following in the footsteps of fellow social media leader Musk who, after acquiring X, then known as Twitter, in 2022, dismantled the company\u2019s fact-checking teams and made user-generated context labels called community notes the platform\u2019s only method of correcting false claims.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mg6c29000p3b6mahrp6rro@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meta says it is ending its partnership with third-party fact checkers and instituting similar, community notes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mgh6yz000v3b6mt4gecozu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think Elon has played an incredibly important role in moving the debate and and getting people refocused on free expression, and that\u2019s been really constructive and productive,\u201d Kaplan said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mgjeqh000y3b6mvmfiewti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The company also plans to adjust its automated systems that scan for policy violations, which it says have resulted in \u201ctoo much content being censored that shouldn\u2019t have been.\u201d The systems will now be focused on checking only for illegal and \u201chigh-severity\u201d violations such as terrorism, child sexual exploitation, drugs, fraud and scams. Other concerns will have to be reported by users before the company evaluates them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mguwna0009356mok6iry9r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Zuckerberg said Tuesday that Meta\u2019s complex systems to moderate content have mistakenly resulted in too much non-violating content being removed from the platform.
