But the business has bigger problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysq4n000m27p31lhuc8xa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Four years ago, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg banned Donald Trump from Facebook and Instagram, saying the risks of allowing him on the platforms were \u201csimply too great\u201d after Trump repeatedly used the sites to broadcast election lies and cheer on the January 6 mob.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz3900033b6me1itiyor@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A lot\u2019s changed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz3900043b6m83xdwgxu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Now, Zuckerberg is making it crystal clear that Meta and MAGA can get along.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5myu1gx000q3b6m7lug1y8p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The social media giant is canning its fact-checkers and making its platforms look a little more like X, the site owned by \u201cfirst buddy\u201d Elon Musk. At the same time, Meta named Trump ally and UFC boss Dana White to its board of directors on Monday, days after elevating Joel Kaplan, the most prominent Republican lobbyist for the company, to be its new head of global affairs. Meta was one of several large tech companies to donate $1 million to Trump\u2019s inauguration fund. And Zuckerberg \u2014 whom Trump once threatened with life in prison \u2014 has personally made the pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago to dine with the incoming president since the election.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz3900053b6mjs27rqaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While Zuckerberg is clearly trying to insulate Meta from Trump\u2019s looming corporate retribution tour, he\u2019s also courting a potential disaster if Meta\u2019s advertisers flee and users begin to associate the brand \u2014 already tarnished by AI slop and a yearslong dearth of innovation \u2014 with the kinds of unsavory characters who now dominate X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz3900063b6mdlw7zeir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Tuesday morning, Zuckerberg tapped the president-elect\u2019s favorite TV channel, Fox News, to announce that the world\u2019s dominant social media platforms are now, for all intents and purposes, pro-Trump.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz3900073b6mua6t8ts2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meta is getting rid of its third-party fact-checkers, Zuckerberg said, because they have been \u201ctoo politically biased,\u201d made too many mistakes \u201cand have destroyed more trust than they\u2019ve created\u201d \u2014 unfalsifiable statements that echo the right\u2019s longtime claim that Facebook censors conservative views. Meta will replace fact-checkers with \u201ccommunity notes\u201d similar to those on X, in which users can add comments to posts that may contain false information.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz3900093b6m0lmspdfi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The hits kept coming on Tuesday, as my colleague Clare Duffy reported that Meta quietly updated its guidelines to free users who want to refer to gay and transgender people as having a \u201cmental illness,\u201d or refer to women as \u201chousehold objects\u201d and \u201cproperty.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000a3b6ml3qbsyhp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            All of this buys Meta some insurance going into an era of Trump 2.0. As business leaders remember all too well from Round One, Trump has shown little restraint when he senses companies are being insufficiently loyal. Just take a look at X, the site Musk acquired in 2022 when it was called Twitter. Musk remade the site in his own image, reinstating White nationalists and other offensive accounts that had been banned under Twitter\u2019s safety guidelines. Advertisers, wary of their products appearing alongside hate speech, rushed to the exits. Millions of users, similarly unhappy about the return of neo-Nazis on the platform, also left for competitors like Bluesky and Meta\u2019s Threads.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000c3b6mrzrlxu00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            X\u2019s value has cratered 80% since Musk bought it, according to estimates from investment giant Fidelity.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000d3b6m4ekyso8o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That\u2019s not a huge problem for X and Musk, who could theoretically bankroll the entire operation himself.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000e3b6m5a92qdwa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The same can\u2019t be said for Meta, one of the world\u2019s most valuable public companies, with a market cap of $1.5 trillion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000f3b6m2ewtlsr1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBrand safety remains a key factor in determining where advertisers spend their budgets,\u201d Emarketer principal analyst Jasmine Enberg said in an email Tuesday. \u201cSocial media is already a minefield for content that many brands deem unsafe, and Meta\u2019s change could exacerbate those problems.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000g3b6m20e2ceu8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Even a slight dropoff in engagement could hurt the business, Enberg said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mz0wff00123b6m3svu6y9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            We\u2019ve seen it before.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000h3b6mssiqvty7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2022, Meta lost nearly $240 billion in market value in a single day \u2014 the biggest one-day drop in company<strong> <\/strong>value in the history of the US stock market at the time<em> <\/em>\u2014 after it reported a slight decline in daily active Facebook users and an 8% drop in quarterly profit.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000i3b6mqxj3vxcr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That hits Zuckerberg where he lives, because he\u2019s the biggest individual shareholder, says Cory Doctorow, a journalist, author and activist with the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation. But more importantly, stock swings hit the rich-but-not-billionaire-rich class of Meta executives.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000j3b6myx6yjj0o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cZuckerberg is insulated from the consequences of making bad choices until he\u2019s not \u2014 until things reach a breaking point\u2026 and then he tends to panic,\u201d Doctorow told me. \u201cTech calls these panics \u2018pivots,\u2019 but they\u2019re just the outcome of being the CEO of a company that posts anemic growth or even a contraction and sees the Street just go nuts on you.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000k3b6mqpjj504m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Past \u201cpivots\u201d have included the Metaverse, the sci-fi nonsense that Zuckerberg pitched as the future of the company three years ago. More recently, Meta is testing out its own AI-generated \u201cusers\u201d in an apparent ploy to goose engagement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm5mysz39000l3b6mt92nm2hp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey\u2019re now at the end of a long run of extremely bad choices,\u201d Doctorow said. Which is not to say Meta is doomed, per se. \u201cBut I think that they are on the path to becoming a kind of zombie \u2014 like MySpace is today. MySpace still exists.
