He has previously said only that he could reincarnate outside Tibet, possibly in India where he lives in exile.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl200083b6mxkyk54x3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSince the purpose of a reincarnation is to carry on the work of the predecessor, the new Dalai Lama will be born in the free world so that the traditional mission of the Dalai Lama \u2013 that is, to be the voice for universal compassion, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, and the symbol of Tibet embodying the aspirations of the Tibetan people \u2013 will continue,\u201d the Dalai Lama writes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl200093b6m6fha7dvw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, fled at the age of 23 to India with thousands of other Tibetans in 1959 after a failed uprising against the rule of Mao Zedong\u2019s Communists.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000a3b6mfm4t4pmi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Beijing insists it will choose his successor, but the Dalai Lama has said any successor named by China would not be respected.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000b3b6moslqhz3h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            China brands the Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for keeping alive the Tibetan cause, as a \u201cseparatist.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000c3b6mbwhf6pk9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When asked about the book at a press briefing on Monday, a spokesperson for China\u2019s foreign ministry said the Dalai Lama \u201cis a political exile who is engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000d3b6msfgaes8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOn the Tibet issue, China\u2019s position is consistent and clear. What the Dalai Lama says and does cannot change the objective fact of Tibet\u2019s prosperity and development.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm845btdz000o3b6mpo4grm54@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"increasingly-unlikely-to-return-to-tibet\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Increasingly unlikely\u2019 to return to Tibet<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000e3b6m8py36o5o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Beijing said last month it hoped the Dalai Lama would \u201creturn to the right path\u201d and that it was open to discussing his future if he met such conditions as recognizing that Tibet and Taiwan are inalienable parts of China, whose sole legal government is that of the People\u2019s Republic of China. That proposal has been rejected by the Tibetan parliament-in-exile in India.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000f3b6mncbvl19g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Supporters of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan cause include Richard Gere, a follower of Tibetan Buddhism, and Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the US House of Representatives.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000g3b6mfs4jbzrr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            His followers have been worried about his health, especially after knee surgery last year. He told Reuters in December that he might live to be 110.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000h3b6mu15lvwcp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his book, the Dalai Lama says he has received numerous petitions for more than a decade from a wide spectrum of Tibetan people, including senior monks and Tibetans living in Tibet and outside, \u201cuniformly asking me to ensure that the Dalai Lama lineage be continued.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm845bsl2000i3b6mxs4wpmjs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tibetan tradition holds that the soul of a senior Buddhist monk is reincarnated in the body of a child on his death.
