Although Sudzha is a small place, with a population of about 5,000 people before Ukraine\u2019s incursion, it was one of the only key towns still held by Ukraine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cxzbp001g3b6moi2qa6pc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Speaking on the regular call with reporters Thursday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed confidence that all parts of the Kursk region held by Ukraine will soon be liberated.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cxzbp001h3b6ms63dwdg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPresident (Vladimir Putin) said that this needs to be done as quickly as possible. (It will take) as much time as is necessary to save the maximum number of lives of our military and civilians. But there is no doubt that the Kursk region will be liberated fairly soon,\u201d Peskov said asked how long it might take to push the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the area.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cxzbp001i3b6mxwdab5m7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Putin made a surprise visit to the Kursk region on Wednesday. Wearing military uniform in video broadcast by Russian state television, the Russian president told frontline troops that Moscow\u2019s goal is to \u201ccompletely liberate\u201d Kursk as soon as possible, during his first trip to the western region since Ukraine\u2019s unexpected incursion there last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cxzbp001j3b6m9dnmbwma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The carefully choreographed visit appeared designed to boost morale as Russian forces advance on the final remnants of Ukraine\u2019s holdouts inside Russia.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87d8i2r002h3b6m55v3slyx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Putin delivered a speech to soldiers, in which he urged them to oust the remaining Ukrainian forces in the region and raised the possibility of creating a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d along Russia\u2019s border with Ukraine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cxzbp001k3b6m2jxpimuc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ukrainian soldiers captured in Kursk should be treated as \u201cterrorists,\u201d Putin added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cvbqw001e3b6mm8pjwbyx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ukraine launched its shock incursion into Kursk in August, swiftly capturing territory in what was the first ground invasion of Russia by a foreign power since World War II. As well as capturing land that could potentially be swapped for Russian-occupied territory, the campaign aimed to divert Moscow\u2019s resources from the frontlines in Ukraine\u2019s east.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cy8po001p3b6mdva0vhd2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Kyiv has struggled to hold onto its captured territory, with its grip on the region rapidly deteriorating in recent days.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cy8po001q3b6m1ztj383v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Wednesday, Ukraine\u2019s top general Oleksandr Syrskyi hinted at further tactical retreats to \u201cmore favorable positions,\u201d saying his priority was to \u201csave the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.\u201d Russia had carried out airstrikes on its own land, including the town of Sudzha, which was \u201calmost completely destroyed,\u201d Syrskyi added.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm87cpiej00013b6m1vxxdvsm@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm87cpiej00013b6m1vxxdvsm@published\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20250313-ukraine-russia-incursion-map\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20250313-ukraine-russia-incursion-map\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20250313-ukraine-russia-incursion-map\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm87cy8po001r3b6mw0vioypy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also told reporters on Wednesday: \u201cThe Russians are clearly trying to put maximum pressure on our troops.
