Inside, shelves are stocked with an array of Russian goods \u2013 from chocolates and cookies to honey and vodka.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900053b6mokdtxnm6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In China, pop-up stores specializing in Russian-made products have become an increasingly common sight. Their proliferation has left some residents puzzled, with many on Chinese social media questioning why these stores seem to have sprung up overnight.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900063b6mh0p3qola@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Thousands of such stores have opened across the country in recent years, tapping into the Chinese public\u2019s affinity for Russia and deepening trade ties between Beijing and Moscow since Vladimir Putin\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900073b6mvjh8gew3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            China has become a critical economic lifeline for sanctions-hit Russia, with bilateral trade reaching record highs year after year. While cheap Russian oil, gas, and coal dominate China\u2019s imports, Russian food products \u2013 such as ice cream, sweet biscuits and milk powder \u2013 have also risen sharply in popularity.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900083b6mgxfqi6nz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Chinese businesses have rushed to capitalize on the booming demand.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900093b6mu2mnkovp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            More than 2,500 new companies involved in the trade of Russian goods have been registered since 2022, according to China\u2019s business records, with nearly half registered in the past year alone. Around 80% of the new firms that rushed to cash in on the craze remained in operation as of this month, business registration records show.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/cm88v46j800013b6mb696a1xp@published\" data-component-name=\"graphic\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-ApWS3\" class=\"graphic__chart-anchor\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000a3b6mzfkzh9lu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Most of these companies are based in Heilongjiang, the northeastern province bordering Russia, though in the past two years they\u2019ve spread in other provinces.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000b3b6mawxt3l4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            More than aquatic and agricultural products, which make up the bulk of China\u2019s food imports from Russia, it is Russian-branded chocolates, biscuits and milk powder that have captured the attention of Chinese consumers, appealing directly to the \u201cMade in Russia\u201d brand promoted by Moscow.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000c3b6m0irfo6cc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The stores\u2019 explosive growth \u2013 dubbed \u201ccrazy\u201d by a Chinese state media report \u2013 has also sparked scrutiny over the authenticity of their products. And this chocolate is pure. They\u2019re all very good,\u201d she said, gesturing toward a wide selection of chocolates.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000g3b6melymr8j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the background, a loudspeaker played a looping message, welcoming customers to the \u201cRussian Goods Pavilion\u201d and hailing Russian products for their \u201chealthiness, natural ingredients, and high quality.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000h3b6meuvl4yb7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is not only a platform for selling Russian products but also a window showcasing Russian culture and charm,\u201d it declared.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000i3b6minntou6o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Liang Jinghao, a tourist from the northern Shanxi province, said he had seen many similar Russian goods stores back home. \u201cRussia is a very good country, with a vast land area and rich resources, and its people are also very friendly,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" 20, has opened three Russian goods stores in Pingliang, a small city in the northwestern province of Gansu, since September last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder favorable\u201d views toward Russia. By contrast, about 76% expressed \u201cunfavorable views\u201d toward the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000q3b6myw9p8y3q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The made-in-Russia craze can be traced back to early 2022, according to Chinese state media.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000r3b6msigbnzke@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Just days after Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, the \u201cRussian State Pavilion\u201d \u2013 an e-commerce store endorsed by the Russian embassy in China \u2013 went viral on Chinese social media. The event was organised by the Russian Export Centre \u2013 a state-owned development institute \u2013 with support from Moscow and the provincial government.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000v3b6mco09hbcm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            More than 150 Russian companies participated in the week-long event, selling $2.3 million of Russian goods to Chinese consumers online and offline, Sputnik reported, citing the Russian Export Center. Three more such fairs have since been held, including in the southwestern metropolis of Chengdu.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000w3b6m72r5hb1y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Russian Export Center has authorized eight official retail stores in China under the \u201cRussian State Pavilion\u201d brand. However, these outlets are vastly outnumbered by thousands of unofficial stores capitalizing on the surging demand for Russian products.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm889t45z001g3b6mg8bftwoi@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"scrutiny-and-backlash\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Scrutiny and backlash<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000y3b6m9wiwqm1p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As their popularity grows, the unofficial stores have also come under greater scrutiny from Chinese consumers and media, especially over the quality and authenticity of the goods sold there.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl69000z3b6m9lr81rmr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Late last year, Chinese shoppers took to social media to complain that some products labeled as Russian for sale at the stores were in fact made in China and other countries, including Malaysia.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900103b6m835cjlzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A report by state-affiliated Jiemian News found a significant portion of food products sold at Russian goods stores \u2013 such as bread, sausage and milk powder \u2013 were produced in factories in northeastern China.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900113b6mp0du6t4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Douyin, China\u2019s version of TikTok, Russian influencers based in China rushed to expose what they called \u201cfake Russian goods.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm889sl6900123b6mhfwro3la@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI\u2019ve never seen these candies in Russia.
