It was 5 a.m. and the guards had just told him to pack up his belongings. But the next thing he knew, he was blindfolded with a noose around his neck.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8olx7wb00073b6m3e5jbkyl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI could tell that they had brought in a cleric, and he was reciting the Quran over my head\u2026 and he kept telling me \u2018Repent, so that you go to heaven.\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8olfj9b00003b6mo047t84h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yasin spent two years in Iran\u2019s jails for his involvement in the \u201cWoman, Life, Freedom\u201d protests in 2022, during which he joined street demonstrations and recorded anti-regime songs.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnbxg6000i3b6mcdwno9yo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The months-long uprising was sparked by the death of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini in September that year after she was arrested for allegedly not observing Iran\u2019s mandatory hijab law.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnc1gv000l3b6moc5kfjms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yasin, whose legal name is Saman Sayedi, was arrested in October 2022 and is among many artists who were prosecuted in connection with the movement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8poytd6003k3b6mjz4tfdn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He was initially sentenced to death after being charged with the Islamic Republic\u2019s crime of \u201cwaging war against God\u201d by pulling out a gun during an anti-government protest, firing three bullets into the air, and \u201cgathering and colluding with the intention to carry out a crime against national security,\u201d according to the Iranian judiciary\u2019s Mizan news agency. Yasin denies the charges.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnjcwt000o3b6m3hzfy1p5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Both Amnesty International and the UN\u2019s Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran say that 10 men have been executed in relation to the insurrection sparked by Amini\u2019s death.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnmv42000v3b6mdl1ar49b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yasin was one of dozens of protesters who appeared in what rights groups described as sham trials based on forced confessions extracted under torture.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnmv42000w3b6m9d0mtxig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Iran\u2019s Supreme Court later overturned Yasin\u2019s death sentence on appeal, and his sentence was eventually set at five years. In the summer of 2023, the artist managed to release an audio message from prison, shared by a Kurdish rights organization, in which he first alleged being abused by the authorities as they attempted to extract a confession.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pno5ia000z3b6mvaonhfx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Now, he is able to describe his ordeal in far greater detail as he recovers in Germany, and earlier this month testified before a UN human rights commission in Geneva, Switzerland.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pno9lq00153b6mmgc488zr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPhysically, the torture I endured has changed me tremendously \u2013 there are still lasting effects. I developed a lot of trauma after prison,\u201d he said. The words \u201cNothing can stop me\u201d are tattooed in English on one of his wrists.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pno7n600123b6md79b33ji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yasin had long been writing what he describes as \u201cprotest music\u201d about social injustice and hardship in Iran.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnpigl001p3b6mihthh3p4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his song \u201cHaji,\u201d written and released months before being arrested, he sang:    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8po05g500313b6mm249hf5x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            <em>\u201cI stood tall with pride. Yet they banned my voice. They forbade my happiness. They hung me upside down like a sacrificial animal.\u201d <\/em>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnpd6j001n3b6m4wm8mzj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those lyrics were to foreshadow the torture he says was inflicted by Iranian authorities after his arrest.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm8pnqnwe001r3b6m3i2kbaf3@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"they-call-it-the-morgue\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018They call it the morgue\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnrzzp001w3b6msijrw4ib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey inserted a pen into my left nostril and then forcefully hit it from below. I passed out from the pain, and when I woke up, I was covered in blood,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<aside data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/pull-quote\/instances\/cm8pntipi00223b6m1a3zs3dp@published\" data-component-name=\"pull-quote\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" class=\"pull-quote inline-placeholder\">\n<div class=\"pull-quote__section\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__text inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\">                    I heard from the other prisoners that they call it the morgue because the temperature is so low                <\/p>\n<p class=\"pull-quote__attribution inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"attribution\">                    Saman Yasin                <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnrfdx001u3b6mpspo8704@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Then there was the underground cold room inside the Evin prison compound, which Yasin says interrogators told him \u201cdoesn\u2019t even exist on the map.\u201d He believes it\u2019s in a building that belongs to Iran\u2019s Ministry of Intelligence.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pntkvw00253b6mhtfx0qw4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI heard from the other prisoners that they call it the morgue because the temperature is so low,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is freezing cold.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnw25j002d3b6mvzsfgjcc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            His testimony is consistent with the findings of a two-year investigation into the 2022 crackdown by the UN\u2019s fact-finding mission. It said the Iranian government \u201cconsistently refuted allegations of torture,\u201d but did not indicate whether allegations had been investigated or why they had been dismissed. The UN report also found that the alleged crimes were committed \u201cin furtherance of a state policy.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm8pnyddr002l3b6mdltn60tr@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-daring-escape-from-iran-and-the-cost-of-freedom\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A daring escape from Iran, and the cost of freedom<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnwlpq002g3b6m3itv79lg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In late October 2024, after two years in prison, Yasin was released on medical furlough. About a month later he had nasal surgery and was recovering at home when the phone rang unexpectedly. The authorities were ordering him to go back to prison, five months earlier than expected.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnyszy002n3b6mnx65p2j8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But he didn\u2019t go back. \u201cI thought to myself, I can\u2019t just sit here and do nothing,\u201d the rapper said. \u201cIf I left the country, first of all, it would spare my family from even more suffering because of me. And second of all, if I was on the outside, I could be a voice for the people, I could do something meaningful and take a step forward for them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/interactive-video\/instances\/cm8pnyvle002p3b6m42mahxa9@published\" class=\"interactive-video\" data-component-name=\"interactive-video\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__container \">            <video class=\"interactive-video__player\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" autoplay=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><\/video>        <\/div>\n<div class=\"interactive-video__metadata\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__caption\">                    <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\"><\/span><figcaption class=\"interactive-video__credit\">Saman Yasin<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnzbsq002u3b6mulm03aw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhen I got to the very top, the pressure was too much \u2013 my nose started bleeding, and I passed out,\u201d he said. \u201cBy some miracle, I made it into Iraq.\u201d From there, with the help of NGOs and a German politician, he was able to travel to Germany.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnzbsq002v3b6mt8ch9g3w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Now he finds himself starting from scratch in Berlin on a special humanitarian visa, a struggling artist with dreams of making it in America. Loneliness and being far from family are taking a toll, but he\u2019s trying to make terms with the cost of freedom.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnzbsq002w3b6m44306ka4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn those early days, even though the atmosphere was terrifying, and the repression aimed at silencing people was intense, there was still a scent of freedom in the air,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8pnzbsq002x3b6mck9ci8d5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAfter prison, I feel like I have a huge responsibility toward the people.
