One PRCS medic remains missing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq29ae000j356m4r5pvmy1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last week, PRCS said nine of its emergency medical technicians had been missing since March 23 following an incident in which Israeli forces fired on ambulances and fire trucks in southern Rafah.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq29ae000k356mtaxcdtrb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In response to the initial incident, the Israeli military said it had fired on the ambulances and fire trucks because they were being used as cover by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq29ae000l356mkiy02rx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Aid organizations and the UN have expressed outrage over the attacks, which the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent said were the \u201csingle most deadly\u201d for IFRC workers in almost a decade.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq29ae000m356mfh5kn2px@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis massacre of our team is a tragedy not only for us at the Palestine Red Crescent Society, but also for humanitarian work and humanity,\u201d PCRS said in its statement, calling the targeting of its medics \u201ca war crime\u201d punishable under international law.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq29ae000n356m6885218j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The attacks come amid Israel\u2019s renewed assault on the enclave and as its complete blockade of humanitarian aid nears the one-month mark.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm8wq2pky000x356m1x8ygi9o@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"buried-beneath-the-sand\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Buried beneath the sand<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wp1v4v0000356mxvpds83j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            OCHA, the UN\u2019s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said the bodies were recovered after a \u201ccomplex, week-long rescue operation\u201d that involved using bulldozers and heavy machinery to unearth the victims and their battered vehicles from under sand.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz0012356mi6m8n0yp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHealth workers should never be a target. And yet, we\u2019re here today, digging up a mass grave of first responders and paramedics,\u201d Jonathan Whittall, the head of UNOCHA in the occupied Palestinian territories, said from the site.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq2jan000u356m00bg28mv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Video shared by the UNOCHA showed a bulldozer digging through dirt and moving debris as emergency responders used shovels to reach the victims. Several bodies were seen being pulled from sand, some wearing PRCS vests and showing signs of decomposition.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz0013356mtph8c5o2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Early information indicates the first team of aid workers dispatched to the area were killed by Israeli forces on March 23 and other emergency aid crews were struck over the following several hours as they searched for their missing colleagues, UNOCHA said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz0014356mnf84jnqc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOne by one, they were hit, they were struck, their bodies were gathered and buried,\u201d Whittall said. \u201cWe\u2019re digging them out in their uniforms, with their gloves on.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz0015356m0ppdmab5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ambulances, as well as UN and civil defense vehicles, were found crushed and buried under the sand, Whittall added, accusing Israeli forces of trying to cover up the scene.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz0017356mnrgvu72z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to the PRCS, their aid workers were dispatched to Rafah\u2019s Al-Hashashin area on March 23 to respond to Israeli attacks when they came under assault.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz0018356mkl1jbuy6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIsraeli forces besieged the area, leading to (the) complete loss of communication with our teams,\u201d PRCS said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz0019356mxqly4nzn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hours later, Gaza\u2019s Civil Defense said that six of its staff also went missing after being dispatched to the same area following what it described as a \u201csudden incursion by the Israeli occupation forces, the killing and injuring of dozens, and the besieging\u201d of PRCS vehicles.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz001b356m1ivd9yjj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It said it had \u201celiminated\u201d a number of Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants by firing on the vehicles and condemned what it claimed was \u201cthe repeated use of civilian infrastructure by the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, including the use of medical facilities and ambulances for terrorist purposes.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz001d356m6u4cu8wv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The news also follows Israel\u2019s decision before the ceasefire collapsed to block humanitarian aid from entering the enclave, in what it described as a move to pressure Hamas into accepting new terms for an extension of the ceasefire rather than proceed with phase two of the truce.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq32iz001e356mi6qnu644@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            UNOCHA and aid groups accuse Israel of violating international law by blocking the flow of aid into Gaza and of using starvation as a weapon of war. The same organizations have accused Israel of restricting or creating hurdles to the entry of aid throughout the war.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm8wq3dab001j356mzfjfazj1@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"health-services-must-be-protected\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Health services must be protected\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq31zu0010356mo5um1jgy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            International aid and humanitarian organizations have repeatedly condemned the Israeli military\u2019s attacks on medical facilities and personnel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq3b3y001h356moz7bvctq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cEven in the most complex conflict zones, there are rules. These rules of International Humanitarian Law could not be clearer \u2013 civilians must be protected; humanitarians must be protected. Health services must be protected,\u201d Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the IFRC, said in a statement on Sunday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq3lx0001o356mk0tqb04x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hospitals in Gaza \u2013 including Nasser Medical Complex, the enclave\u2019s largest functioning hospital \u2013 have seen intense bombardment and raids from Israeli forces accusing the facilities of harboring Hamas operatives.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm8wq3lx0001p356mjgtn7n0z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            About 400 aid workers, including teachers, doctors and nurses, have been killed in Israeli attacks in the enclave since October 7, 2023, according to OCHA\u2019s latest update released Tuesday.
