It\u2019s so popular that McDonald\u2019s there added a burger bun made of rice to its menu.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr4900033b6osli51tvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But being so reliant on the staple leaves the country \u2013 the world\u2019s fourth-biggest economy \u2013 vulnerable to the slightest supply glitch.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr4900043b6ocobyaho2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In recent years, a combination of bad weather, heatwaves and the threats of typhoons and earthquakes have sparked bouts of panic-buying in the nation of 124 million people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr4900053b6ow18l9eia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The average price of a 60-kilogram bag rose to around $160 last year \u2013 up 55 per cent compared to two years ago, according to government figures.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr4900063b6o07mncxp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The situation has become so dire that the government announced in February that it would release 210,000 tons of rice \u2013 more than a fifth of what it holds in its contingency reserve \u2013 for auction. The first bags of the reserve rice have now gone on sale in supermarkets.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr4900073b6onn8tc7v4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The government built its rice reserve in 1995, two years after an unexpected cool summer crippled rice harvests forcing it to import overseas grains.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr4900083b6ojg79lwxe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It dipped into the store following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in which 20,000 people died or went missing, and again following the deadly Kumamoto earthquake in 2016.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr4900093b6o9pchocop@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Other countries across Asia where rice is a staple, such as India, Vietnam and Thailand also hold rice stockpiles to shield their populations against shortages and price rises \u2013 which can spill into politics, like a recent surge in egg prices in the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000a3b6o4311ufs6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            China also has a strategic reserve of the country\u2019s favorite meat, pork, to deal with emergencies and stabilize prices when necessary.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000b3b6ols872nkt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Japan, the first batch of 150,000 tons of rice went under the hammer last month, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000c3b6o5llt0wl7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPrices now are exceptionally high,\u201d Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Taku Eto said ahead of the auction.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000d3b6ok34qg6if@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBut I urge everyone not to worry,\u201d he added, saying that he expected the injection of rice into the market would mean prices \u201ceventually come down.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000e3b6owblnpraa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Eto also attributed the recent price hikes to a supply chain issue, saying that there was sufficient rice in the system, only that it has failed to reach the shelves in supermarkets, without specifying why.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000h3b6owgieiyas@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But, in a country that is particular about its rice \u2013 with various prefectures competing against one another for the title of best rice in the country &#8211; some said they would rather sit this batch out, skeptical of the grain\u2019s quality.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000j3b6ootv410vy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Uchibori said she stocked up on supplies in early March after reading about prices going up and hoped what she had would last until prices ease.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000k3b6o1dwbikge@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBut it doesn\u2019t look like it will go back to its original price,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000l3b6ojt9jt4vd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yuko Takiguchi, 53, a part time worker, said she would pass on the auctioned rice unless it became significantly cheaper.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000m3b6oucko2w9m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She said she wouldn\u2019t mind forking out more for quality rice as the price of flour had also gone up, driving up costs for other staples such as bread, udon and pasta.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm92epr49000n3b6om9x5p95r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI prefer rice as a staple food since it is more filling.
