{"id":16748,"date":"2025-05-13T15:02:38","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T15:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/13\/one-in-five-people-in-gaza-face-starvation-report-warns-as-israels-months-long-blockade-continues\/"},"modified":"2025-05-13T15:02:38","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T15:02:38","slug":"one-in-five-people-in-gaza-face-starvation-report-warns-as-israels-months-long-blockade-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/13\/one-in-five-people-in-gaza-face-starvation-report-warns-as-israels-months-long-blockade-continues\/","title":{"rendered":"One in five people in Gaza face starvation, report warns, as Israel\u2019s months-long blockade continues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmam7n1js004l26p5766c9fz9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One in five people in the Gaza Strip are facing starvation as the entire territory edges closer to famine, a new United Nations-backed report warns, after nearly three months of Israel\u2019s blockade of critically needed humanitarian aid.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200013b6ksaz4ohuu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The warning comes as the UN and several NGOs, as well as civilians in Gaza, say the situation has deteriorated since Israel launched its renewed assault on the enclave in March, as residents struggle to access food, medicine and clean water.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200023b6kzfy34t14@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The enclave\u2019s entire population is experiencing \u201chigh levels of acute food security\u201d and the territory is at \u201chigh risk\u201d of famine, the most severe type of hunger crisis, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said in its latest report Monday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200033b6k28kw07np@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGoods indispensable for people\u2019s survival are either depleted or expected to run out in the coming weeks,\u201d the IPC said. Food is running out, and what little is left is being sold at exorbitant prices that few can afford, it said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200043b6kfbqag7fu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Israel imposed a humanitarian blockade on Gaza on March 2, cutting off food, medical supplies, and other aid to the more than 2 million Palestinians who live in the territory. Israel says the blockade, along with the military\u2019s expansion of its bombardment of Gaza, is intended to pressure Hamas to release hostages held in the enclave \u2013 but international organizations say it violates international law, with some accusing Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200053b6kmk4rvd6s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There is a \u201chigh risk\u201d that famine will occur between now and the end of September, the IPC report warned, leaving most people in Gaza without access to food, water, shelter, and medicine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200063b6k6275cr88@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOnly an immediate and sustained cessation of hostilities and the resumption of humanitarian aid delivery can prevent a descent into famine,\u201d the report said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200073b6kqcakymcv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Under the IPC system \u2013 a five-phase scale used to measure the severity of food insecurity \u2013 a famine can only be declared if data shows certain thresholds are met. Those conditions are: at least 20% of all households must face an extreme food shortage, 30% or more of children must be acutely malnourished, and at least 2 in every 10,000 people die every day because of outright starvation or the interaction of malnutrition and disease.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200083b6kvci6k5xx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first threshold has already been met, according to the IPC. Nearly 469,500 people \u2013 around 22% of the population &#8211; will likely experience \u201ccatastrophic\u201d food insecurity, the highest phase on the IPC scale, between May and September, the report said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j3200093b6ketenasxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            David Mencer, a spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s office, said Monday that \u201cfamine has never happened\u201d in Gaza, despite IPC warnings, and that if there is hunger in Gaza, it is caused by Hamas depriving civilians of humanitarian aid.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000b3b6k2mj4dpoq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since March, Israel\u2019s renewed assault has displaced more than 430,000 people, the report said, disrupting essential services and the distribution of critical supplies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000c3b6kx71cy9om@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            All 25 bakeries run by the UN\u2019s World Food Programme (WFP) were forced to shutter at the beginning of April due to lack of supplies, and food is running out at most of the 177 hot meal kitchens, according to the IPC report. And food prices are soaring.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000d3b6ks27pfaxa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Prices for flour have increased 3,000% since February and 55-pound sack of wheat flour can run anywhere between $235 and $520, the report said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmamd2qwr000r3b6kelw7nbcf@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"pregnant-women-and-children-among-the-most-at-risk\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Pregnant women and children among the most at risk<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000f3b6ke3pbvcf1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Children and pregnant women are at particularly high risk. Nearly 71,000 cases of acute malnutrition among children under five are expected between April 2025 and March 2026, the report said. And nearly 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women will need treatment for acute malnutrition, it said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000i3b6k1sjivnr3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMy kids are vomiting after they eat it. It smells horrible,\u201d Rajab said. \u201cBut what else can I do? What will I feed my children if not this?\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000j3b6ktczzzome@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dr. Amjad Al-Muzaini, a gynecologist working in Gaza City, said women in Gaza are forced to choose between feeding their children or caring for their own health. Most often, they sacrifice their own well-being to ensure survival, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000k3b6kd092x5r0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While doing cesarean surgeries, women were found to have severely deteriorated intestinal and uterine tissues, Al-Muzaini said, likely the effects of eating poor-quality and mainly canned foods.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000l3b6kdki78wua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The WFP has said recently it is ready to surge enough aid into Gaza to feed the entire population for up to two months. UNRWA, the main UN agency supporting Palestinians, said it has nearly 3,000 trucks filled with aid waiting to cross into Gaza that is currently blocked by Israel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000m3b6kiuzme4gj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cFamilies in Gaza are starving while the food they need is sitting at the border,\u201d the WFP\u2019s Executive Director, Cindy McCain said on X. \u201cBut WFP hasn\u2019t been able to get new aid in since 2 March.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000n3b6k1rzofbaa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf we wait for famine to be officially confirmed, it will be TOO LATE,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmamd2j32000o3b6ks8a145rb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Israel launched its war in Gaza following Hamas\u2019 October 2023 attack in which militants killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostage. Since then, Israel\u2019s military campaign has killed  almost 53,000 Palestinians.
