When Venezuelan First Lady Cilia Flores personally handed Maikelys Espinoza to Bernal at the presidential palace in Caracas on Wednesday, it put an end to nearly a year of separation between the two.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasphzn700063b6m2sbeeo0o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Maikelys<strong> <\/strong>spent most of her time in the US in foster care under the custody of the US Office of Refugee Resettlement before being returned to her mother under court order.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasqhcmh00033b5tb7ij6zyj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            DHS claims that the separation was for the child\u2019s safety, alleging that Bernal and her partner, whom the US deported to the high-security CECOT prison in El Salvador earlier this year, are members of the Venezuelan criminal gang Tren de Aragua \u2013 something both parents deny.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasphzn700073b6mqv164oje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe child\u2019s mother, Yorely Escarleth Bernal Inciarte, oversees recruitment of young women for drug smuggling and prostitution for Tren de Aragua,\u201d DHS alleged in a statement on May 14. The US government has not provided specific evidence for this allegation, and both Bernal and Espinoza say<strong> <\/strong>they have no affiliation with Tren de Aragua.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasqm8fr00093b5trzqc5o5q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bernal told La Iguana that US authorities cited Bernal\u2019s upcoming immigration hearings at the time when they took first her daughter into custody last year.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmasqyztc000f3b5tb6unumm3@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"nearly-a-year-of-separation\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Nearly a year of separation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasphzn700093b6mwl4y3791@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bernal entered the United States with Maikelys and her partner Maiker Espinoza on May 14, 2024. All three were swiftly detained by US immigration authorities, Bernal told La Iguana, and Maikelys was removed from their care five days later.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasr129i000i3b5tj6xbr8vb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Months would pass before Mikaelys \u2013 who was just over a year old when they crossed the border \u2013 was able to see her mother again through a video calling app under immigration authorities\u2019 supervision, according to Bernal.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasr1mzx000k3b5tza02ij2v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At that point, the toddler no longer recognized her, she says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasphzn7000a3b6mmy4pacts@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey allowed me a video call once a week for thirty minutes,\u201d Bernal told La Iguana. \u201cThat\u2019s when I was able to see her. I knew it was her. But she didn\u2019t recognize me anymore. It had been about five months until I was able to see her again.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmasphzn7000b3b6mcyzbr4e3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Eventually, Bernal and Espinoza were able to see their daughter in 30-minute in-person visits, she says.
