But there is only one species in Jamaica, found primarily along the southern coast from St. Thomas to Westmoreland.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj00063b6mxk04mq3c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Once revered and feared across the island, the American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) has long ruled the mangroves and coastal lagoons.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj00073b6m7lgqysul@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But in recent years, its population has been decimated, due to illegal hunting, habitat loss and plastic pollution, as well as killings prompted by a lingering fear among locals.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj00083b6m57vs43vq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lawrence Henriques has made it his life\u2019s mission to change that.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj00093b6mtkkfubg3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Known as \u201cThe Crocodile Guardian,\u201d Henriques has spent the past four decades fighting for their survival.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj000a3b6mr4w43tpg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He runs the Holland Bay Crocodile Sanctuary, a grassroots conservation project in the southeast of the island, perched on the edge of what he says is one of Jamaica\u2019s last viable crocodile habitats.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj000b3b6mymubg8bu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            From this remote corner of the island, he\u2019s trying to undo years of damage: nursing sick crocs back to health, raising juveniles and restoring their numbers in the wild.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj000c3b6m89604d6a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s a real fear of crocodiles in Jamaica,\u201d says Henriques. \u201cThey\u2019re not tolerated by a lot of people. So if one turns up in someone\u2019s backyard, it\u2019s often killed for meat or just because people are afraid.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj000d3b6mwzatej30@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although crocodiles are often seen as aggressive and dangerous, attacks are few and far between. While reliable figures are hard to come by, according to the global database CrocAttack, there have been 11 incidents reported over the past decade in Jamaica, including one fatality in 2018.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiw4hj000e3b6mhwe75oad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That\u2019s why Henriques is working to change the narrative about the animal and help people understand that they are far less threatening than their reputation suggests.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjitepn00003b6myt46vriy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Born and raised in the Jamaican capital,<strong> <\/strong>Kingston, during the 1960s, Henriques always had a penchant for \u201ccreepy crawlies,\u201d such as spiders, scorpions and snakes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiwlo6000m3b6mfac1mwph@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But it was crocodiles that truly captured his attention.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiwlo6000n3b6mbxt1tm0t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe had a lot more crocodiles and a lot more habitat in those days,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI always had a half a dozen or so baby crocodiles rearing in my bedroom.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiwlo6000o3b6mrclkwhbr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That fascination eventually became a vocation. After studying overseas and learning more about reptiles when<strong> <\/strong>working with the Scientific Exploration Society, a UK charity, in Belize, Henriques returned to Jamaica in 1980.  He was startled to find that despite crocodiles being classified as endangered in 1971 under the Wildlife Protection Act, there was little practical conservation happening.<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiwlo6000p3b6mhq22n1da@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe laws were there, but nobody was doing anything,\u201d he says. \u201cThe environmental agency was very under-resourced and still is to this day. And there was nobody really with expertise or<strong> <\/strong>knowledge on reptiles.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmbjiwsfr000r3b6m7dbnuqe7@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-sanctuary-on-the-edge\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A sanctuary on the edge<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiwkal000k3b6m4fvyimlp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Henriques volunteered to assist the Jamaican government, carrying out crocodile rescues and providing rehabilitation, all while holding down a job in the citrus industry.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjixcun000w3b6mmo93zdb9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He continued like this for almost 20 years, before a brief relocation to London, UK. When he returned to Jamaica in 2010, he launched what would become the Holland Bay Crocodile Sanctuary \u2014 a facility dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation and public education.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjixcun000x3b6mls21imyn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The sanctuary, which lies on the edge of a wetland, is home to 27 adult crocodiles along with 18 baby crocs. The juvenile crocs have been bred on site and are typically released into the wild after three years, while the adults have been rescued and rehabilitated after being hit by cars, caught in traps, or found living in squalid conditions. Over the past three years, around 90 have been successfully released back into the wild according to Henriques.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjixcun000y3b6mgqacxs5b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of the crocodiles living at the sanctuary currently is Xena, who was discovered guarding her eggs in an area littered with trash, her skin slimy and her teeth gray from pollution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjixcun000z3b6m4rtsi7y8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Savannah Boan, an international ambassador from Gatorland Global, the conservation arm of the Florida-based wildlife park which helps to fund the sanctuary, says that since being relocated, Xena\u2019s skin has healed and her teeth are white again. Her babies have also been raised at the facility and released into safe areas, helping to boost wild populations of the species.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmbjiybkg00123b6mn4urxsn9@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"black-market\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Black market<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjixbdj000u3b6mjkdjv0u6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Despite legal protections, crocodiles in Jamaica face growing threats. Poaching is rampant, often driven by demand for meat or misguided fear, according to officers from the country\u2019s National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA).    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid00173b6mty79hnl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPoaching is definitely a huge problem,\u201d says Leighton Mamdeen, an environmental officer at NEPA. \u201cWe try to limit it through enforcement measures such as regular monitoring and we partner with the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Jamaica Defence Force to do patrols.\u201d<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid00183b6mtn40dkal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to media reports, there is a thriving black market for crocodile meat and eggs in Jamaica, with the meat sold for as much as 5,000 Jamaican dollars ($31) a pound (450 grams) \u2013 more than 10 times the price of chicken meat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid00193b6mvtsul464@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This could<strong> <\/strong>stem from a widespread misconception in some rural communities that crocodile meat<strong> <\/strong>has aphrodisiac properties.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid001a3b6mpg59lc01@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Damany Calder, another environmental officer at NEPA, says he has noticed a troubling pattern during callouts, when crocodiles are discovered with their tails removed.<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid001b3b6m9y01byqb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s a rumour about the crocodile tail\u2026 it\u2019s (used) either for sexual performance, fertility or longevity,\u201d he says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid001c3b6ma0rxweva@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In other cases, crocodiles have been found in backyard ponds, kept as pets, or used as props for TikTok stunts or music videos. There was even a time when a small live crocodile was found stuffed in a broken fridge, says Calder. He believes it may have been part of a ritual referred to as Obeah, a Jamaican religious tradition similar to voodoo.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid001d3b6md8k87sx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Social media videos have occasionally resulted in prosecutions but only if culprits are caught in the act, Calder says.<strong> <\/strong>Individuals found guilty of killing crocodiles<strong> <\/strong>may be charged a maximum fine of $100,000 or face one-year imprisonment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid001e3b6mvn30i4cw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe police are heavily involved, and they\u2019re trying to improve the penalties,\u201d says Henriques.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiytid001f3b6mrsh6gd40@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cBut like everything else, it\u2019s catching the person and proving it in court. It\u2019s a very long, drawn-out process.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmbjiz1fx001h3b6mdz58q4gr@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"habitat-erased\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Habitat erased<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiyryz00153b6m4htxviqb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Development is another killer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001m3b6mqsfmnhvc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Jamaica\u2019s mangroves and wetlands are currently being cleared for tourism and residential development according to The Forestry Department. This affects the country\u2019s coastal resilience, as mangroves reduce wave energy and storm surges, helping to prevent flooding, and it damages biodiversity, as they are serve as nurseries for fish and provide essential habitat for species like crocodiles.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001o3b6mmrhks35v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As this territory shrinks, crocodiles are forced closer to humans.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001p3b6min0wu5cw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThese animals are ending up in places they\u2019ve always lived,\u201d Henriques says. \u201cBut now those places are towns and roads \u2026<strong> <\/strong>We\u2019ve taken their habitat.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001q3b6mdna0j0mx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            To Henriques, the crocodile isn\u2019t a menace \u2014 it\u2019s a keystone species that has been on the island for millions of years. It even features on the Jamaican coat of arms, which shows a crocodile perched atop a royal helmet and mantling, designed to symbolize the island\u2019s unique wildlife and natural heritage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001r3b6mp8vh5yj9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey\u2019re like engineers of the ecosystem,\u201d he says. \u201cThey dig channels, control fish populations and keep the wetlands healthy.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001s3b6mnttnn3v6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He explains that<strong> <\/strong>the presence of these apex predators helps to regulate biodiversity within aquatic ecosystems by controlling prey populations and creating microhabitats that support various flora and fauna.<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001t3b6mi1uad2tp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But<strong> <\/strong>Henriques warns that because of poaching and habitat loss, the island no<strong> <\/strong>longer has many large male crocodiles left along the coastline: \u201cMost now are smaller. It\u2019s a serious shift.\u201d<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjiziwh001u3b6mvwsm8mt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat\u2019s happening in Jamaica reflects a global pattern \u2014 wetland species are disappearing, and with them, the health of the entire ecosystem,\u201d he adds.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmbjizr5a001w3b6mlgwrb9ec@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"changing-minds-one-school-at-a-time\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Changing minds, one school at a time<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjizhcx001k3b6m8mmy6od8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Despite the challenges, there\u2019s a cautious sense of hope.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjj00u900213b6m2600drn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Henriques and NEPA have ramped up community outreach and education programs, especially in areas near crocodile habitats.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjj00u900223b6mepmnoahg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOne of the most impactful things we\u2019ve done is visit schools,\u201d says Mamdeen. \u201cIf you start with the kids, you\u2019ll have a greater chance of securing the animal\u2019s future.\u201d<strong><\/strong>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjj00u900233b6mk8kuh8ue@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When reports of a crocodile in a pool of water near a school caused panic among parents and children, NEPA directed its outreach efforts toward local students.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjj00u900243b6modid0cat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe told them: crocodiles would rather run (from you) than rush (towards) you,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you\u2019re near water at night, walk with a stick. If the animal is touched, it moves.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbjj00u900253b6mhnoupqhx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Henriques<strong> <\/strong>added: \u201cPeople are beginning to understand these animals have a place \u2026 They\u2019re not pests.
