{"id":18104,"date":"2025-06-20T15:02:45","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T15:02:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/20\/70-rhinos-reared-at-controversial-captive-breeding-farm-set-free-in-rwanda\/"},"modified":"2025-06-20T15:02:45","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T15:02:45","slug":"70-rhinos-reared-at-controversial-captive-breeding-farm-set-free-in-rwanda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2025\/06\/20\/70-rhinos-reared-at-controversial-captive-breeding-farm-set-free-in-rwanda\/","title":{"rendered":"70 rhinos reared at controversial captive breeding farm set free in Rwanda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbul6sgg006627qod6y36ysy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Transporting the world\u2019s second largest land mammal halfway across the second largest continent isn\u2019t exactly easy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwn8m900013b6k2gpbmp49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But in a 3,400-kilometer (2,100-mile) journey that involved crates, cranes, trucks, and a Boeing 747, 70 captive bred southern white rhinos were moved from South Africa to Rwanda\u2019s Akagera National Park in early June as part of an initiative to \u201crewild\u201d them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwn8m900033b6k89fra4fu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The creatures, which can weigh over 2,000 kilograms (more than 4,000 pounds), originated from a controversial breeding program started in the 1990s by property developer John Hume.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwn8m900043b6kak6ccegc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hume, who spent years lobbying for the legalization of the rhino horn trade, amassed stockpiles of horn, obtained by trimming them without harming the animals, with the aim of flooding the market to driver poachers out of business and to fund conservation efforts.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/interactive-video\/instances\/cmbzyaea400013b6kfxxv4f2c@published\" class=\"interactive-video\" data-component-name=\"interactive-video\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__container\">            <video class=\"interactive-video__player\" loop=\"\" muted=\"\" autoplay=\"\" playsinline=\"\"><\/video>        <\/div>\n<div class=\"interactive-video__metadata\">\n<div class=\"interactive-video__caption\">                    <span data-editable=\"metaCaption\" class=\"inline-placeholder\">African Parks moved 70 rhinos 3,400 kilometers from South Africa to Rwanda as part of a rewilding initiative.<\/span><figcaption class=\"interactive-video__credit\">African Parks<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbul6zgp00003b6kb78h4o2d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But he ran out of money, and with the horn trade still banned under international law, he put the rhinos up for sale in 2023. He told Agence France-Presse (AFP) at the time that he\u2019d spent around $150 million on the project \u2013 with surveillance being the largest cost. \u201cI\u2019m left with nothing except 2,000 rhinos and 8,000 hectares (20,000 acres) of land.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwnjlq00063b6khhux7ap3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He didn\u2019t receive a single bid. African Parks \u2014 a conservation nonprofit that manages 23 protected areas across the continent \u2014 stepped in to acquire for an undisclosed sum what was the largest rhino captive breeding operation in the world, with plans to \u201crewild\u201d the animals over 10 years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwnjlq00073b6k7ol3cnm0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The translocation marked the first cross-continental move for African Parks\u2019 Rhino Rewild initiative.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwnjlq00083b6kc6t0him3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s a very important milestone,\u201d says Taylor Tench, a senior wildlife policy analyst at the nonprofit Environmental Investigation Agency US, who wasn\u2019t involved in the relocation. \u201cThis is definitely a big development with respect to African Parks\u2019 efforts.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmbzwp0vt000n3b6k0p416eow@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-story-of-hope\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018A story of hope\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbul8fmw00073b6kik5zas5s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Today, there remain only about 17,000 southern white rhinos in Africa and they\u2019re classified as \u201cnear threatened\u201d on the<em> <\/em>International Union for Conservation of Nature\u2019s<em> <\/em>Red List. That means the 2,000 southern white rhinos that African Parks bought, and plans to spread around the continent, comprise more than 10% of the remaining population.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwnslw000a3b6k7bzel7g2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Although the international trade of rhino horn has been banned under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) since 1977, demand from consumers in Asia who see it as a status symbol, or falsely believe it can cure ailments ranging from hangovers to cancer, is still driving poaching.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbul9qdf000b3b6kber0sc7n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Poachers sometimes kill a rhino outright, or tranquilize it before cutting off its horn, sometimes hacking off a large portion of the animal\u2019s face, leaving it bleeding to death.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwo4gl000c3b6kpdzybju5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In South Africa, where the majority of the population lives, 420 rhinos were poached in 2024. More than 100 were killed in the first three months of this year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwo4gl000d3b6kq4x261pc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tench says that rhino poaching was rampant in the continent from 2012 to 2015, and a \u201clot has been accomplished since then.\u201d  He added that Kenya lost no rhinos last year and that poaching has dropped significantly in Zimbabwe. Today, poaching is mostly concentrated in South Africa and Namibia, he says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwo4gl000e3b6kudjnr6kq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            To better address the issue, Tench says more government resources should be dedicated to addressing the organized criminal networks behind the poaching and international trading of rhino horn, and to increased international cooperation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwo4gl000f3b6kpzb2ybsd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Rickelton says there are a number of future relocation projects in various stages of discussion and planning. He adds that a strong framework is in place to ensure the locations that receive the rhinos provide a suitable habitat, security to keep the animals safe, and enough funding to care for them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbul9s8y000e3b6kueg4adpc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The move to Akagera National Park took more than a year and a half of planning and approvals. And the cost of moving each rhino, including three years of monitoring and management afterwards, is about $50,000 (the move was backed by the Howard G. Buffet Foundation).    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwofg1000h3b6kvh9wk7l6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The animals were first moved from the breeding program facility to the South African private game reserve Munywana Conservancy, to expose them to conditions more like Akagera. Then, the rhinos were loaded into individual steel crates, driven to an airport in Durban, South Africa, and carefully loaded by crane onto a Boeing 747.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwofg2000i3b6k8em4tpdo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After arrival in Kigali, Rwanda, the rhinos made the final leg of their journey by road. Now, the rhinos need to adapt to their new environment. They\u2019ll be monitored by a veterinary team for several weeks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwofg2000j3b6kcxtmj54e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Measures like a canine unit to reduce poaching are in place in Akagera, which has reduced poaching to \u201cnear zero\u201d levels, according to the park.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmbzwofg2000k3b6k2ds0348z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There\u2019s reason for optimism. In 2021, African Parks moved 30 rhinos to Akagera from a private game reserve in South Africa. Since, they\u2019ve had 11 offspring.
