The long-polluted waterway is finally opening up as a summertime swim spot following a 1.4 billion euro ($1.5 billion) cleanup project that made it suitable for Olympic competitions last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4jzta00093b6mwh68368n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Three new swimming sites on the Paris riverbank will open on Saturday \u2013 one close to Notre Dame Cathedral, another near the Eiffel Tower and a third in eastern Paris.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4jzta000a3b6mxdypq5va@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Swimming in the Seine has been illegal since 1923, with a few exceptions, due to pollution and risks posed by river navigation. Taking a dip outside bathing areas is still banned for safety reasons.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4jzta000b3b6ml36oa4fn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Seine was one of the stars of the Paris Olympics in 2024, whether as the scene of the ambitious opening ceremony or the triathlon and marathon swimming competitions. That didn\u2019t go without challenging hurdles such as rainfall increasing levels of bacteria, which postponed some competitions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4jzta000c3b6m3wqavpbu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The city\u2019s authorities have given the green light for the public opening, with water quality results consistently in line with European regulations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq35nte00003b6mx4myw187@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s a symbolic moment when we get our river back,\u201d said sports coach and influencer Lucile Woodward, who will participate in the first amateur open water competition in the Seine on Sunday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4kr58000k3b6mrgtq023z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Woodward, who enjoyed a dip alongside Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo just before the start of the Olympic Games, is confident things will go well.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4kr58000l3b6mxja1s5y2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re going to enjoy swimming in it, being there and setting an example,\u201d she said. \u201cOnce people will see that in the end there are hundreds of people who have fun and enjoy it, everyone will want to go!\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4kr58000m3b6m9o4nrwat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cFor families, going to take a dip with the kids, making little splashes in Paris, it\u2019s extraordinary,\u201d Woodward added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4kr58000n3b6mw2fkklf1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Olympic athletes competing in the river was a spectacular reward for the cost of the cleanup effort.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4kr58000o3b6m7q4mjz7s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the run-up to the Games, authorities opened new disinfection units and created a huge storage basin meant to prevent as much bacteria-laden wastewater as possible from spilling directly into the Seine when it rains.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4kr58000p3b6m555c2xuk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Houseboats that previously emptied their sewage directly into the river were required to hook up to municipal sewer systems. Some homes upstream from Paris also saw their wastewater connected to treatment plants instead of the rainwater system flowing directly into the river.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmcq4l0ci000r3b6m7xwtpqeu@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"green-flag-for-swimming\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Green flag for swimming<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4kk8e000i3b6mwyiqjj18@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Paris Deputy Mayor Pierre Rabadan said water is tested daily to confirm it\u2019s safe to swim. As on French beaches, different colored flags will inform visitors whether or not they can go in.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4lgjk000w3b6mzs1r91jo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGreen means the water quality is good. Red means that it\u2019s not good or that there\u2019s too much current,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4lgjk000x3b6mp8ekwryx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tests have been in line with European regulations since the beginning of June, with only two exceptions due to rain and boat-related pollution, Rabadan said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4lgjk000y3b6mak801u4x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI can\u2019t make a bet on the numbers of days when we\u2019ll have to close this summer, but water quality seems better than last year,\u201d he added. \u201cWe\u2019re in a natural environment\u2026 so weather condition variations necessarily have an impact.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4lgjk000z3b6mwpds92w4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last year, several athletes became ill after competing in the triathlon and open water races during the Olympics, though in most cases it was not clear if the river was to blame for their sickness.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4lgjk00103b6mdxp3a7x4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            World Aquatics stressed the conditions met the sport\u2019s accepted thresholds.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4lgjk00113b6mcr9n5oyh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe legacy of these efforts is already evident, with the Seine now open for public swimming \u2013 a positive example of how sports can drive long-term community benefits,\u201d the organization said in a statement to The Associated Press.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmcq4llts00133b6mbmylk32t@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"skepticism-remains-about-water-quality\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Skepticism remains about water quality<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4l5nq000u3b6muxkvobo2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Dan Angelescu, founder and CEO of Fluidion, a Paris and Los Angeles-based water monitoring tech company, has routinely and independently tested bacterial levels in the Seine for several years. Despite being in line with current regulations, the official water testing methodology has limitations and undercounts the bacteria, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4m4ir00183b6mm3b5pthx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat we see is that the water quality in the Seine is highly variable,\u201d Angelescu said. \u201cThere are only a few days in a swimming season where I would say water quality is acceptable for swimming.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4m4ir00193b6m5ptyhopq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAll we can say is that we can raise a hand and say look: the science today does not support the current assessment of water safety used in the rivers around Paris, and we think that there is major risk that is not being captured at all,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4m4ir001a3b6mutyfc7k9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some Parisians also have shown skepticism toward the idea of swimming in the Seine. The feeling is often reinforced by the water\u2019s murky color, floating litter and multiple tourist boats in some places.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4m4ir001b3b6mcoc09fw9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Enys Mahdjoub, a real estate agent, said he would not be afraid of swimming, but rather \u201ca bit disgusted. It\u2019s more the worry of getting dirty than anything else at the moment.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder subheader vossi-subheader vossi-subheader--size-h2\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cmcq4uclg001d3b6mrt3yxh97@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-dream-come-true\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A dream come true<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4lwc100163b6mtfu1l145@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Until the end of August, swimming sites will be open for free at scheduled times to anyone with a minimum age of 10 or 14 years, depending on the location. Lifeguards will keep a watchful eye on those first dips.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcq4umhk001i3b6mpt3vu7kf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity, a dream come true,\u201d said Clea Montanari, a project manager in Paris. \u201cIt\u2019d be a dream if the Seine becomes drinkable, that would be the ultimate goal, right?
