{"id":1896,"date":"2024-04-10T15:21:15","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T15:21:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/10\/uk-nobel-prize-winning-physicist-peter-higgs-dies-age-94\/"},"modified":"2024-04-10T15:21:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T15:21:15","slug":"uk-nobel-prize-winning-physicist-peter-higgs-dies-age-94","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/10\/uk-nobel-prize-winning-physicist-peter-higgs-dies-age-94\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Nobel Prize-winning physicist Peter Higgs dies age 94"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusu9kj8001a63qn76b5flpm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Physicist Peter Higgs, whose theory of an undetected particle in the universe changed science and was vindicated by a Nobel prize-winning discovery half a century later, has died aged 94, the University of Edinburgh said on Tuesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv700083b6ichdo09d7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 at the CERN research centre near Geneva was widely hailed as the biggest advance in knowledge about the cosmos for over 30 years, and pointed physics towards ideas that were once science fiction.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv800093b6i5mm11bhh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cFor me personally it is just the confirmation of something I did 48 years ago, and it is very satisfying to be proved right in some way,\u201d the British scientist told Reuters at the time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv8000a3b6iwdjusa4u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAt the beginning, I had no expectation that I would still be alive when it happened.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv8000b3b6iv4e7fd5g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Edinburgh University, where Higgs held a professorial chair for many years, said he had passed away peacefully on Monday at home following a short illness.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv8000c3b6ix31b71hh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPeter Higgs was a remarkable individual \u2014 a truly gifted scientist whose vision and imagination have enriched our knowledge of the world that surrounds us,\u201d said Professor Sir Peter Mathieson, the university Principal and Vice-Chancellor.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv8000d3b6ifoh43vqu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Higgs described himself as \u201cincompetent\u201d in the physics laboratory at school and at first preferred maths and chemistry. But inspired by quantum physicist Paul Dirac, who had attended the same school, he went on to specialise in theoretical physics.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv8000e3b6i0hyrpzk7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            What came to be known as the Higgs boson would solve the riddle of where several fundamental particles get their mass from: by interacting with the invisible \u201cHiggs field\u201d that pervades space.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv8000f3b6irl8nejw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That interaction, known as the \u201cBrout-Englert-Higgs\u201d mechanism, won Higgs and Belgium\u2019s Francois Englert the Nobel prize in physics in 2013. Englert\u2019s collaborator Robert Brout died in 2011.    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clusueiv8000g3b6i3tf9dg03@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"an-incredible-thing\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    \u2018An incredible thing\u2019<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000h3b6iysknpuvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 1964, Higgs\u2019 first paper on the model was rejected by an academic physics journal at CERN as being \u201cof no relevance to physics\u201d. His revised paper, although published weeks after Englert and Brout\u2019s, was the first to explicitly predict the existence of a new particle.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000i3b6ibvksq833@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOver a weekend \u2026 I gradually realised that I knew two things that had to be brought together,\u201d he said. \u201cI had to go back to my office on the Monday and check that I hadn\u2019t made a mistake about this.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000j3b6i6ll1wj7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The tantalising vision promised to fill a gap in the \u201cStandard Model\u201d \u2014 the basic theoretical framework of physics \u2014 if only the particle\u2019s existence could be proven.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000k3b6i3lwslo68@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For nearly three decades, physicists at CERN and at Fermilab in Chicago replicated the \u201cBig Bang\u201d by smashing particles together, hoping to glimpse the Higgs boson in the resulting mini-explosions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000l3b6izp8olqtg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            CERN\u2019s massive Large Hadron Collider finally proved to be the sledgehammer needed to crack the nut, and in 2012 two experiments there independently found the Higgs boson.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000m3b6ihv28u0h6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Englert and Higgs were in the packed auditorium at CERN to hear the announcement of the discovery, while hundreds of thousands watched online.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000n3b6i0skxwdfi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,\u201d CERN Director General Rolf Heuer said, to a roar of applause.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000o3b6iqr2m3jqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Higgs, clearly overwhelmed, his eyes welling up, told his fellow researchers: \u201cIt is an incredible thing that it has happened in my lifetime.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clusueiv9000p3b6iw7jubxk0@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-award\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    \u2018What award?\u2019<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000q3b6iciehah52@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Higgs boson completed the Standard Model, but fully understanding it is a work in progress. Its discovery allowed theoreticians to turn their attention to the vast portion of the universe that remained unexplained, as well as esoteric ideas such as the possibility of parallel universes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000r3b6itbgn7hjm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            An atheist, Higgs loathed the nickname \u201cthe God particle,\u201d which headline writers frequently bestowed on the boson that bore his name.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000s3b6ibrlujmuj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He had strong views on what was good and bad about science and resigned from a movement for nuclear disarmament when it began campaigning against the harnessing of nuclear energy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000t3b6i5trg4riz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 1962 Higgs married Jody Williamson, an American linguist and nuclear disarmament campaigner, who died in 2008. They had two sons.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clusueiv9000u3b6ioiubr147@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Higgs was modest about his achievements and shy of the media.
