{"id":2495,"date":"2024-04-24T15:28:53","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T15:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/24\/take-at-home-brain-cancer-treatment-for-children-will-soon-be-available-on-nhs\/"},"modified":"2024-04-24T15:28:53","modified_gmt":"2024-04-24T15:28:53","slug":"take-at-home-brain-cancer-treatment-for-children-will-soon-be-available-on-nhs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/04\/24\/take-at-home-brain-cancer-treatment-for-children-will-soon-be-available-on-nhs\/","title":{"rendered":"Take-at-home brain cancer treatment for children will soon be available on NHS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Children with brain tumours will soon have access to drugs they can take at home, the NHS has announced. <\/p>\n<p>The treatment is a first of its kind and clinical trials have shown it to significantly slow the progression of the disease, allowing <strong>children <\/strong>a better quality of life for longer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-component-name=\"sdc-site-outbrain\" data-target=\"\" data-widget-mapping=\"\" data-installation-keys=\"\">    <\/div>\n<p>The treatment is for children and young people with low-grade gliomas that have a specific genetic mutation.<\/p>\n<p>It means they can be spared the harsh side effects that can come with chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<p>It combines two drugs &#8211; dabrafenib and trametinib &#8211; and has been found to stop the disease progressing for more than three times as long as standard chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p><strong>Sky News <\/strong>has been following 12 year-old Aaliyah&#8217;s progress<strong> as she underwent trials for the new treatment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She has been taking dabrafenib and trametinib as part of a study at Great Ormond Street Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m able to just take tablets twice a day and go to the hospital every few months, rather than be in hospital to have chemotherapy,&#8221; Aaliyah said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been able to start secondary school with my friends and go to pretty much all my lessons.
