Here\u2019s what to know"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1asa9000mc1nqalqi9mls@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On June 2, Mexicans will vote to pick their next president in a historic race that could see a woman take the top job for the first time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwvdvlhx00033b6js0bkh9rk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In addition to the presidency, there are more than 20,000 positions to fill and an estimated 70,000 candidates vying for those offices, including 128 senate seats and 500 deputy seats; the mayorship of Mexico City; and governor\u2019s offices in Chiapas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos, Puebla, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucat\u00e1n.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000a3b6jyt48j1qm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here\u2019s who is running for president:    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clwr1yfmg001b3b6jb4sl5byp@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"claudia-sheinbaum\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Claudia Sheinbaum<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000c3b6jz28v3j2v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The 61-year-old Sheinbaum is a former Mexico City mayor and climate scientist. A longtime political ally of incumbent President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, she was the&nbsp;Mexico City&nbsp;environment secretary&nbsp;from 2000-2006&nbsp;when he&nbsp;was mayor.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000d3b6jwkm9b3e7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If she wins, Sheinbaum would be not only the first female president in Mexico, but the first president with Jewish heritage, although she rarely speaks publicly about her personal background and has governed as a secular leftist.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000e3b6j973qv95y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Her close alignment with L\u00f3pez Obrador has been both a blessing and a curse politically. Sheinbaum has said she\u2019s&nbsp;\u201cnot a close copy\u201d of L\u00f3pez Obrador \u2013 but she also doesn\u2019t shy away from touting the principles they share, even repeating his slogans on the campaign trail.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000f3b6jh9idcmr0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            (L\u00f3pez Obrador has repeatedly dismissed whispers that he favors a candidate that he could influence, telling press in February that he would \u201cretire completely\u201d after his term.)    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000g3b6ja62y7zuf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Among her policies,&nbsp;Sheinbaum has promised:    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000h3b6jybvhb9ae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u2022 Continuing Lopez Obrador\u2019s pension for all senior citizens<br \/>\u2022 Scholarships for more than 12 million students<br \/>\u2022 Free fertilizers for small farm owners<br \/>\u2022 On security, she proposed consolidating&nbsp;the&nbsp;National Guard, reform of judiciary, strengthening intelligence and research and coordination with law enforcement authorities.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clwr1zgse001e3b6j5ugcj0ut@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"xochitl-galvez\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    X\u00f3chitl G\u00e1lvez<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000j3b6jlxvxa6le@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Backed by an opposition coalition of Mexico\u2019s PRI, PAN and PRD parties, X\u00f3chitl G\u00e1lvez is a former senator and previously served as the top official for indigenous affairs under former President Vicente Fox.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000k3b6j9ecjutky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The daughter of an indigenous father and a mixed-race mother, the 61-year-old was a businesswoman before entering politics.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000l3b6jo0sxmi4a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For a relative newcomer, Galvez\u2019s entry into the presidential race has&nbsp;gained impressive momentum, experts say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000m3b6j0ggmqfok@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Her proposals include:    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000n3b6jp7o4fdnm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u2022 Continuing Lopez Obrador\u2019s pension for all senior citizens<br \/>\u2022 A \u201cuniversal social protection system\u201d of welfare programs for middle and lower classes<br \/>\u2022 A security approach that would strengthen local and state police<br \/>\u2022 Galvez has also hinted that that oil-rich Mexico should invest more in renewable energy, saying earlier this year: \u201cWe haven\u2019t done it because we are dumbasses.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clwr2ar4b001h3b6jyqamkz65@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"jorge-alvarez-maynez\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Jorge \u00c1lvarez M\u00e1ynez<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000p3b6jskjpfv50@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A late entrant in the race, Jorge \u00c1lvarez M\u00e1ynez shot to international attention earlier this month, when a stage collapsed at his campaign event in the northeastern city of San Pedro Garza Garc\u00eda, killing nine people and leaving at least 121 people injured.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwtj9t1000043b6j8ft7n6fl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The 38-year-old has pledged to:    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000t3b6jixjn1pn0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u2022 Eliminate the crime of simple drug possession to to stop criminalizing poverty, and move from prohibitionism to regulation of drugs<br \/>\u2022 End the&nbsp;longstanding militarization of Mexico&nbsp;and instead focus on training and strengthening police<br \/>\u2022 He has also proposed a gradual economic reform&nbsp;including&nbsp;a universal pension system, guaranteed labor rights and income and progressive tax reform<br \/>\u2022 M\u00e1ynez&nbsp;has also called for&nbsp;transforming the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and Pemex into renewable and clean energy companies,&nbsp;and&nbsp;for closing some refineries    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clwr2b4wa001k3b6jtqoz4rn1@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"the-key-issues-security-and-migration\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    The key issues: Security and migration<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000v3b6j2lg53zki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Security and immigration are top issues for all of Mexico\u2019s presidential candidates.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000w3b6j98jaq3l9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Campaigning in the run-up to the election has been marred by dozens of assassination attempts and other political violence. There are concerns now that that the attacks have already&nbsp;cooled off campaigns; experts and political parties say some candidates have renounced their bids in fear of their lives.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000x3b6jhdrwxec0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But electoral violence is just a part of Mexico\u2019s broader security crisis, with sky-high&nbsp;crime&nbsp;and&nbsp;homicide rates.&nbsp;In the first four and a half years of L\u00f3pez Obrador\u2019s government,&nbsp;160,594 homicides were recorded&nbsp;\u2013 a figure surpassing that&nbsp;of&nbsp;the previous administration.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000y3b6j0cogbi58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, a report from the Mexican Peace Index (MPI), prepared by the&nbsp;Institute for Economy and Peace&nbsp;(IEP), has&nbsp;offered&nbsp;some reason for optimism, reporting improvements in&nbsp;five key indicators: homicides, crimes with violence, fear of violence, crimes committed with firearms, and crimes of violence.&nbsp;Homicides and crimes committed with&nbsp;firearms peaked&nbsp;in 2019, according to the May 2024 report,&nbsp;and have since improved.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr2000z3b6jepqzicfx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meanwhile, pressure is growing on Mexico\u2019s southern and northern borders.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr200103b6jbpuayvb2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2023, the National Migration Institute (INM) recorded a&nbsp;77% increase in migrant arrivals compared to 2022. And as it grapples with the surge of migrants and asylum seekers entering and crossing its own territory, Mexico will also have to contend with external policies on migration.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr300113b6j3fqpqok4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As an example, Myriam Guadalupe Castro Y\u00e1\u00f1ez, an academic at the National School of Social Work of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), points to a recent state law in Texas that has already caused waves in Mexico.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clwr1cqr300123b6jeoytoexa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In December, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott&nbsp;signed a bill&nbsp;that would allow state officials to detain and deport people suspected of having entered the United States illegally.
