Gershkovich, the US government and his employer, the Wall Street Journal, have vehemently denied the charges against him.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa5000e3b6jy1mc74qv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Russian Prosecutor General\u2019s office said last Thursday it had approved the indictment and referred Gershkovich\u2019s case to a trial court. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa5000f3b6jefj1dplm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The case will be heard in the Sverdlovsk Regional Court, TASS reported Monday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa5000g3b6j4nv917ky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For more than a year since his arrest,&nbsp;Gershkovich&nbsp;has been imprisoned in Moscow\u2019s notorious Lefortovo Prison, and his pre-trial detention period had been extended numerous times. The trial venue of Yekaterinburg is more than 1,100 miles east of the capital.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa6000h3b6jlk3swlzv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last week, Russian prosecutors said the FSB had \u201cestablished and documented\u201d that Gershkovich was acting on CIA instructions in the month he was arrested, alleging he had \u201ccollected secret information\u201d about a Russian tank factory.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa6000i3b6jy8ixw50q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGershkovich carried out the illegal actions using painstaking conspiratorial methods,\u201d it said in a statement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa6000j3b6jvexvzggz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gershkovich\u2019s detention has been a source of tension between Washington and Moscow, whose relations were already deeply strained due to Russia\u2019s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa6000k3b6j2qxe1wka@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The White House has previously alleged the Kremlin is using Gershkovich, the first American reporter detained in Russia on allegations of spying since the Cold War, as a geopolitical hostage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa6000l3b6jmvmcxq4p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Thursday, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller&nbsp;said the allegations against Gershkovich have \u201cabsolutely zero credibility.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clximtqa6000m3b6jhqrw13t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe have been clear from the start that Evan has done nothing wrong. He should never have been arrested in the first place. Journalism is not a crime. The charges against him are false, and the Russian government knows that they\u2019re false.
