{"id":4674,"date":"2024-06-24T15:13:33","date_gmt":"2024-06-24T15:13:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/24\/this-area-has-a-geographical-curse-residents-along-lebanons-border-with-israel-fear-another-war\/"},"modified":"2024-06-24T15:13:33","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T15:13:33","slug":"this-area-has-a-geographical-curse-residents-along-lebanons-border-with-israel-fear-another-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/24\/this-area-has-a-geographical-curse-residents-along-lebanons-border-with-israel-fear-another-war\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018This area has a geographical curse\u2019: Residents along Lebanon\u2019s border with Israel fear another war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsj3ka6000mggp9g7pjg6z8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the town of Marjayoun in southern Lebanon, around five miles north of the Israeli border, the main square seems almost abandoned.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsj630d0007356kkco3yeem@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A few men play billiards in a storefront nestled in a building crowned with life-sized statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Charbel, a revered Lebanese saint.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsj6aku0009356k4rx1o3zu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            They don\u2019t want to talk about the wars and rumors of war that for decades have plagued this predominantly Christian town near the border.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsj6stq000h356kbtlpax2j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Journalists are a bother, one grumbles, and goes back to the game.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsj6ni7000b356kw0wc3esk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On the other side of the square, a woman in her thirties comes out of a grocery store with a small bag.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsj6ni7000c356ktob4et4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMarjayoun is very nice, it\u2019s fantastic,\u201d the woman, Claude, tells me. \u201cBut the shelling scares us.\u201d That\u2019s all she wants to say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsll54y0026356keblv7la8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Throughout the day, occasional thuds of incoming and outgoing fire echo through the streets.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjduxa000l356ko5k68o2s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have risen sharply since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and the ensuing military campaign by Israel in Gaza. The Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah has been firing missiles, mortars and drones into Israel, and Israel has returned that fire.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjdwpp000n356kc8qi9lpn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tens of thousands of people on both sides of the mountainous border have fled as concerns intensify about the possible outbreak of another full-fledged war.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjdwpp000o356kpilqyncc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On the Lebanese side, residents of Shia-majority towns like Kafr Kila, Adaisa, Aita&nbsp;Al-Shaab and Aitaroun have almost all left. Frequent Israeli airstrikes and artillery barrages have reduced many of these communities to rubble.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjdwpp000p356kmo6tep9s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Marjayoun, in comparison, has been mostly spared.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjdwpp000q356k4e9kkkkc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The town was the headquarters of the Israeli-armed and funded South Lebanese Army (SLA), a Christian-led proxy militia, during Israel\u2019s decades-long occupation of southern Lebanon, which ended 24 years ago after a protracted guerilla war with Hezbollah.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjld3g000s356kb7ne5jel@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            When Israel pulled out in 2000,&nbsp;many of Marjayoun\u2019s inhabitants fled south across the border to Israel, fearful of being accused by fellow Lebanese citizens of being collaborators with Israel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs000u356kw1ow6246@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Their departure, along with Lebanon\u2019s collapsed economy, fear of yet another prolonged conflict, the absence of a functioning state and emigration have sapped Marjayoun of people and prosperity.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs000v356ko6qcx40n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Yet, more than two decades later, some residents still cling to their ancient town and vow not to leave.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs000w356k4ddr6dpy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI feel this area has a geographical curse. There has always been tension,\u201d Edouard Achy told me. \u201cThe threats are coming from both sides of the border. Tensions are increasing day by day. Everything points to something about to happen.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs000x356ku08odllb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Is he going to leave, I ask.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs000y356k9uhyn4va@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He shrugs. \u201cAfter more than eight months of this situation, people just want calm and quiet,\u201d he says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs000z356k1zzvw8wc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            His sister, Amal, and her family have come to church to say a special prayer to mark 40 days since her mother died. Dressed in black with a crucifix around her neck, she brought large loaves of bread and bags of buns to share with the congregation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs0010356kfeqge7tw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Amal exudes a strong connection with her hometown, but wonders how much longer it will be safe as the clouds of war gather overhead.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs0011356kuutuibvx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re staying put, and God willing, we\u2019ll continue to stay,\u201d she insisted. \u201cThe south is the Holy Land. The Messiah tread here two thousand years ago.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjleqs0012356k86o6cx80@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She paused and sighed. \u201cBut if things escalate to war and it reaches here like it did before, with some shelling, of course, like others, we\u2019ll have to leave,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clxsjnjo1001r356kz9dxw131@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"in-war-everyone-loses\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    \u2018In war, everyone loses\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn26g0017356kytievdey@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Half an hour away, in the mostly Druze town of Hasbaya, 85-year-old Abu Nabil sweeps the street outside his shop.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a50019356k4sle4vem@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Druze faith is an offshoot of Islam, with adherents found in Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Jordan.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001a356kr5x9iyf1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A pious man with a gentle smile and a bushy white moustache, he looks on the bright side of life. \u201cThe Lord is merciful to us,\u201d he says. \u201cWe can sleep in our homes. We eat. We drink. No one goes hungry.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001b356k1cui3ixo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Since his birth, Abu Nabil saw Lebanon gain its independence from France in 1943, prosper during the 1960s, become engulfed by civil war, invaded and partially occupied by Israel for decades, and partially occupied by Syria, also for decades.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001c356kcolveffj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He has seen the country emerge from civil war, embroiled in war again with Israel in 2006, wracked by a string of high-profile assassinations, convulsed by a short-lived revolution in 2019, followed by economic collapse, and now once again, on the brink of full-scale war with Israel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001d356ktgvx0uoc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWar is ruinous,\u201d he says, grasping my hand. \u201cIn war, everyone loses, even the winner.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001e356krxg670l6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Across the street, young men drink coffee from small paper cups while smoking cigarettes. They don\u2019t want trouble, they say, declining to be interviewed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001f356kp4aktjtc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The worry here, and in many parts of Lebanon, is that if you speak out against Hezbollah, there could be a price to pay. Some people do, some politicians do, but when Hezbollah lives nearby, it\u2019s best not to take the risk.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001g356k1qd4clw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGaza is not my war, and I don\u2019t want to pray in Jerusalem,\u201d one of the men insisted.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001h356kkwgydpdx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another said one of reasons not one Israeli missile, bomb or artillery round has landed in Hasbaya is because young men act as a sort of armed community watch, making sure no one, neither Hezbollah nor Hamas, fires anything at Israel. It\u2019s not their turf and they\u2019re not welcome here, they say.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001i356kxxxyfl84@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Down the hill, there\u2019s a traffic jam on the road leading out of Hasbaya west towards Marjayoun. Cars crawl at a snail\u2019s pace, drivers sticking their heads out to see what it\u2019s all about.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001j356ktssf9cmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A large group of men, women and children stand around a new white stone building, all dressed in their best. Parked in front is a shining white convertible, the bonnet covered with bouquets of flowers and a license plate reads, in English, \u201cNewly Married.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001k356kjeisdr80@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A group of men arrives in traditional Druze clothing\u2014with small turbans, vests and low-crotched trousers\u2014carrying drums and horns.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001l356kdnetxq9c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As people leave the building, musicians strike up a raucous tune with a heavy beat and high notes, while others twirl prayer beads over their heads.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001m356kaq0ckl1g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The bride, Fatin, in a long lacy dress, and the groom, Taymour, emerge into the sunlight, and everyone cheers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxsjn3a5001n356k6z11szy0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            I decide not to interfere with annoying questions about Israel, Hezbollah, impending war, death, destruction and displacement.
