He denied the charges.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxw4as2d000e3b6kxodzddca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He was extradited from Honduras after the US Department of Justice filed three drug-trafficking and firearms related charges against him in 2022.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxw4as2d000f3b6kvythpuks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Prosecutors had accused Hern\u00e1ndez, 55, of conspiring with drug cartels during his tenure as they moved more than 400 tons of cocaine through Honduras toward the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxw4as2d000g3b6kdestpdy2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In exchange, prosecutors said, Hern\u00e1ndez received millions of dollars in bribes that he used to fuel his rise in Honduran politics.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxw4as2d000h3b6kavker7yw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hern\u00e1ndez was president of Honduras from 2014 until 2022.
