Instead, he was fascinated with how sharks move through water using their multiple fins. It\u2019s no surprise he became a marine biologist.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxugr9gk00063b5wjnj4mcvz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs soon as I realized they were going through a conservation crisis, I wanted to help what I love the most,\u201d said Carde\u00f1osa.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxugwg3q00093b5ww8i06348@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sharks need him more than ever. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature reports 35% of all shark species are threatened with extinction. That number has grown nearly 50% in a decade\u2019s time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuh010b00003b5w3xgwig4f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The primary reason is overfishing; shark meat and fins are highly sought.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuh37a000023b5wzvikbqdc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey are being killed at a rate that cannot be sustained in the future,\u201d said Carde\u00f1osa.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuh37a000033b5w6ec59hv1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Scientists worry the sharks\u2019 dwindling numbers could bring ecological collapse as they play a number of key roles in the ocean.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxupn1uk0000356kjc4toq6d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Unlike many fish, sharks take a long time to reproduce. Fisheries kill about 100 million sharks a year, according to the non-profit Save Our Seas. Many sharks end up as bycatch when long lines and gill nets unintentionally catch them.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuh6quk000b3b5wlatskhay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The largest demand that drives the international trade is shark fin soup.&nbsp;\u201cShark finning is problematic because when you remove the fins from a shark and you put it back in the water, it\u2019s just like a rock or a log just falling to the bottom of the ocean,\u201d said Carde\u00f1osa.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuh9uwx000e3b5wkbb76u5u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf they cannot swim, they will suffocate to death.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuhasp1000g3b5wjakzgbjh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hammerheads are one of the of the most critically endangered sharks- having lost 80% of their population in just the last three decades.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuhatlz000i3b5wcpuuq3im@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cTheir fins are big and really good quality,\u201d said the scientist. \u201cThat means they\u2019re thick and they have these cartilaginous filaments that are used in the shark fin soup.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuhdznn000k3b5wjvywc16u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In recent years, demand has also risen for shark meat- a cheap protein consumed throughout Europe and South America.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clxuherql000o3b5wc5m4o72g@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-small-dna-tool-makes-a-big-difference\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    A small DNA tool makes a big difference<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuhehy3000m3b5wbrcbv3w8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Today Carde\u00f1osa is fighting the illegal trade of endangered sharks as a Distinguished Postdoctoral scholar at Florida International University in Miami. The marine biologist is using molecular and forensic tools to combat smuggling that stretches from Hong Kong to Latin America.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxui223v00003b5wk3o443ew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of the biggest challenges for law enforcement at ports around the world is determining whether shipments of shark fins and meat are violating CITES- The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuhtjef000s3b5w1byro6wt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA lot of the fins look the same,\u201d explained Carde\u00f1osa. \u201cHow can you tell whether a shark fin that is coming into the country is legal or illegal, is from a species that is regulated or not regulated?\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxuhu3ea000w3b5wvwsubqx5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Carde\u00f1osa, along with fellow FIU adjunct professor Demian Chapman, came up with a portable DNA kit that looks like a small red cube. It identifies species and country of origin of shark fins and meat coming into ports.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/clxuvy1tv00033b5wf8bjoq6e@published\" \u201cWe take a little piece of this fin, we run it through a machine for two hours, and we\u2019re able to tell what species it is without sequencing very cheaply, very quickly.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxui3hrs00053b5w1hdsozpf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For years, port authorities were sending samples off-site to labs for testing that came back days if not a week later- slowing down the seizures.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxui3hrs00063b5w82d800ef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Their technology is now used in the shark trade\u2019s busiest ports: Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Spain, Belize, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxui57d200083b5wsulywh0k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Carde\u00f1osa said it has helped Hong Kong authorities go from seizing an average of five tons of shark fins annually before 2018 to one hundred tons since they started using the tool.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxui583w000a3b5w19xev9pc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            His DNA toolkits have also helped stop illegal shipments of European eels and South America\u2019s matamata turtles, earning the marine scientist Interpol\u2019s Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Interpol medal.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clxuj9osk000c3b5wpx2ctyrj@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-decade-of-pounding-pavement-leads-to-international-shark-protections\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    A decade of pounding pavement leads to international shark protections<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb41t000e3b5wayv0v9xx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Carde\u00f1osa and a team of Hong Kong scientists have surveyed fish markets for a decade to determine the source of their shark meat and fins.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000g3b5whu93786r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Using DNA, they\u2019ve tested more than 15,000 samples in Hong Kong and mainland China and discovered a whopping two-thirds of what\u2019s being sold in those markets are from threatened shark species.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000i3b5w3j23owsm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re removing and trading some of the ones that are the most critically endangered in the ocean,\u201d said Carde\u00f1osa.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000j3b5wixewh3or@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That research has helped expand the number of shark species now regulated by CITES. Governments that sign on to the agreement must require permits for every shipment of shark products that moves through their ports, ensuring the trade is legal, traceable and sustainable.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000k3b5wk3z0ldt1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Carde\u00f1osa said when he got started in the field, there were only five or six shark species regulated by the CITES agreement. He\u2019s teaching them ways to fish sustainably \u2013 without dangerous long lines and gillnets \u2013 and how to protect known endangered shark populations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000q3b5wqqxkfnrl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWhat we\u2019re trying to do is to identify areas where those hammerhead sharks spend the majority of the time and make agreements with them to not fish those locations.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000r3b5wjsbghqou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Carde\u00f1osa says good management of shark fisheries \u201cis a really hard task to do. Everybody is trying to find a way to do it.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000s3b5w4esgy042@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He also enlists those local fishermen to help him. \u201cWe teach them how to collect data and bring them in as part of our projects to help.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujb617000t3b5wns5o10eh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The shark scientist is also trying to convince more countries to sign on to the CITES convention on sharks.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clxujkfr1000x3b5w2zt7q24u@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-you-can-help-sharks\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    How you can help sharks<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujkujt000z3b5wvfwizbwd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of the easiest ways to help sharks and all marine life is to try to consume seafood from sustainable sources. There are a number of online resources and apps for that including the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clxujkw0u00123b5wcz7d2007@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Just 4% of global shark catches are sustainable \u2013 so it\u2019s generally not a good idea to consume sharks.
