The military is \u201ccomprehensively analyzing\u201d various possibilities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk00063b6jguqwtdz6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He added that no damage has been confirmed so far.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk00073b6j7b2g4j4i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            South Korea said the first missile, with the 600-kilometer (373-mile) flight distance, was a short-range ballistic missile, but Lee would only say the second was \u201ca ballistic missile,\u201d which leaves open the possibility of it being a new weapon.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk00083b6j88rdcfld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to JCS, the two missiles were launched northeastward from the Changyon-gun area of South Hwanghae province, about 130 kilometers (81 miles) southwest of Pyongyang.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk00093b6j5us9boia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            If the missile exploded after flying 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeastward from Changyon-gun, the debris could have landed near Pyongyang, based on the distance traveled from the launch site.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000a3b6jmhxt3f2w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The JCS could not confirm whether there was an explosion near the capital, which is North Korea\u2019s largest city and home to more than 3 million people.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000b3b6jreiev4ew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last week, North Korea said it successfully conducted a&nbsp;test to deploy multiple warheads from a single-stage engine for a medium- to long-range ballistic missile, marking an important milestone in upgrading its missile technology.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000c3b6jlvhnxpnd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            South Korea later said the North Korean claim was false.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000d3b6j4mkzxjrq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lee, the JCS spokesperson, said that during a successful test, multiple warheads should separate from a missile during the descending stage of its flight, but North Korea\u2019s missile had exploded in the early stage during launch.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000e3b6j3m9jvm7k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            North Korea did not make any statements after Monday morning\u2019s launches, but on Sunday put out a statement on the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) denouncing the recent US-South Korea-Japan military exercises named \u201cFreedom Edge,\u201d calling it another sign of the three partners \u201creckless and provocative military muscle-flexing.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000f3b6j0x6v2ljz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The statement said North Korea would \u201ccontinue to make important efforts to deter the acts of disturbing peace and stability\u201d on the Korean Peninsula.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000g3b6jh37mxo7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Technically the two Koreas&nbsp;remain at war&nbsp;\u2013 an armistice ended the Korean War that split the peninsula in 1953 but no formal peace treaty was ever signed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000h3b6j33tibz3j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Relations between the two countries thawed somewhat in 2017 and 2018, but the situation in North Korea deteriorated in the following years as leader Kim ramped up weapons testing in defiance of United Nations sanctions and diplomatic talks fell apart.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000i3b6jmmciq6zt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meanwhile, both nations are drawing closer to their respective partners \u2013 with North Korea recently signing a defense agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin&nbsp;and South Korea stepping up cooperation with Japan and the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000j3b6jl21lotca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Leif-Eric Easley, professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, said Monday\u2019s missile tests, which occurred during ongoing meetings of the Central Committee of the ruling Worker\u2019s Party, likely served two purposes for the Kim regime.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly2l4okk000k3b6jip9m5ih9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn both North Korean politics and military policy, the best defense is often a good offense.
