What will it mean for the world?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5r11r1000mvrp502gb1u42@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Iran\u2019s snap presidential election will head to a second vote on Friday, with a reformist and conservative hardliner facing off to replace Ebrahim Raisi amid unprecedented voter apathy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tqkmn00043b6jsalkdpzl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After none of the four initial candidates secured more than 50% of the vote on June 28, reformist lawmaker Masoud Pezeshkian and ultraconservative former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili emerged as the two candidates with the most votes, with Pezeshkian leading by 3.9 percentage points.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tqkmn00053b6jmdmuxaaw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first round, however, saw the lowest voter turnout for a presidential election since the Islamic Republic was established in 1979, highlighting the discontent among a population losing faith in the country\u2019s ruling clerical establishment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tqkmn00063b6jd04tvtx8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pezeshkian and Jalili are on opposite ends of the Iranian political spectrum. Each candidate could lead Iran in a starkly different manner at a time when the Islamic Republic is grappling with delicate domestic and international problems \u2013 including an economy in tatters, a restive youth movement and escalating tensions with Israel and the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tqkmn00073b6jj8a7t2jw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Here\u2019s what to expect on Friday\u2019 second round of elections, and how the results could impact Iran and the world.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cly5tqogr000a3b6jrgdr8xxf@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-happened-in-the-first-round\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    What happened in the first round?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tqyp8000c3b6jj7sfqv32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The snap election was held after Raisi died in a helicopter crash on May 19 in the country\u2019s remote northwest, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other officials.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tr768000e3b6je5r0maf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Three conservatives and a single reformist candidate vied  for the country\u2019s top elected seat, after dozens of other candidates were barred from standing by the powerful 12-member Guardian Council, which is tasked with overseeing elections and legislation, and reports directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tr768000f3b6j1pjarpna@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            During the first round, Pezeshkian led with 42.5% of the votes, followed by Jalili with 38.6%, according to the state news agency IRNA. Out of 60 million eligible voters, 24 million cast their ballots, resulting in a 40% turnout.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tr768000g3b6j6cbchaq1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The record low turnout \u2013 in a country where presidential elections usually command more than 60% \u2013&nbsp;came despite Khamenei urging Iranians to show \u201cmaximum participation\u201d in order to strengthen the Islamic Republic against its adversaries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tr768000j3b6j55rnzioz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nevertheless, analysts say critical shifts may be taking place among voters ahead of the second round. Some conservatives \u2013 including those who in the first round supported hardliner Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf &nbsp;\u2013 appear to be moving their support to the reformist Pezeshkian at the expense of his conservative opponent Jalili.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cly5trnab000l3b6jkj39ejj2@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"is-the-conservative-camp-fracturing\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    Is the conservative camp fracturing?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5ts7ud000p3b6jgq4o9d0e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Analysts suggest that some conservatives believe it\u2019s necessary to shift away from some of the uncompromising policies of the late President Raisi, which Jalili is likely to continue.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5ts7ue000q3b6j1kjva4yw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of those conservatives is Sardar Mohsen Rashid, a founder and senior member of the IRGC. Rashid declared his support for Pezeshkian on Monday and called on people to defend him against \u201ccowardly attacks,\u201d according to the conservative Iranian news site Khabar Online.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5ts7ue000r3b6jj60ixdmj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a move that shocked observers, the man who led Ghalibaf\u2019s electoral campaign, Sami Nazari Tarkarani, also declared his support for reformist Pezeshkian, Khabar Online reported.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5ts7ue000s3b6jt02prlqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While it is unclear whether that shift while be reflected on the ground, other supporters of Ghalibaf said they are trying to sway conservatives and silent voters to&nbsp;also back the reformist candidate instead.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5ts7ue000t3b6joceaprhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The splits among conservatives also show that sentiments within camps are not homogenous, analysts it in the ranks of the IRGC,\u201d Parsi said, adding that the current rifts are particularly notable given efforts by the regime to concentrate power only in the hands of the conservatives.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5ts7ue000v3b6joa6rmuub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme at the Chatham House think tank in London, said that Iranian politics is factional and divided, adding that \u201cnot everyone in the IRGC supports or favors conservative or hardline politics.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cly5tsb49000x3b6jod7fihg5@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"what-would-a-win-for-pezeshkian-mean\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    What would a win for Pezeshkian mean?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tscx9000z3b6jz4n3we7e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In a presidential debate on Monday, both candidates appeared intent on garnering votes from the 60% of the electorate that did not participate, experts said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00113b6jppwmkync@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cPezeshkian is adopting more radical rhetoric to attract nonvoters,\u201d Sina Toossi, an Iran analyst and senior fellow at the Center for International Policy in Washington, DC, wrote on X. \u201cMeanwhile, Jalili is trying to soften his image, and has agreed with Pezeshkian numerous times.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00123b6j6wr9itgu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pezeshkian, who comes from an Azeri-Kurdish family, has tried to appeal to minorities, women and the country\u2019s youth, Toossi wrote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00133b6joa3ydj0h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The establishment appoints people from its \u201cown circles and excludes the rest of the population,\u201d the candidate said during the debate on Monday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" Pezeshkian had famously criticized the regime\u2019s handling of the 2022 mass protests, saying that in an interview with Iran\u2019s IRINN TV: \u201cIt is our fault. We want to implement religious faith through the use of force. This is scientifically impossible.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00153b6jljxl59up@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Addressing poverty in Iran, he said during the debate that \u201cthe problem of the poor is us,\u201d adding that if candidates want to increase voter turnout, \u201cthey (the voters) must believe that officials sit at the same table as they do.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00163b6jvaponp3p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Millions in Iran are under the poverty line, often struggling to make ends meet in an economy that has for years been crippled by US sanctions. Iran\u2019s annual inflation rate hasn\u2019t dipped below 30% in over five years, and in June stood at 36.1%, straining wallets across the country.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00173b6jubjg7jly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            This persistent inflation follows the Trump administration\u2019s withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement and the subsequent reimposition of heavy sanctions on the Islamic Republic.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00183b6jq5xgw3b3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pezeshkian stressed the need to re-start dialogue with the West and find a way to end the sanctions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cly5tsosh00193b6jj39hveu9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Iran\u2019s relationship with the West has only worsened in recent months, with Tehran supporting militant groups across the Middle East that have targeted both Israeli and US interests amid the war in Gaza.
