a shocking reversal of last Sunday\u2019s first-round results.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq00063b6kd24w3gwx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Place de la Republique in Paris news of the projected results was met with rapturous applause and fireworks as people embraced one another, breathing a collective sigh of relief:&nbsp;in their eyes,&nbsp;France had been pulled back from the brink.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq00073b6keg08deh7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Turnout on Sunday was the highest in a parliamentary election for more than 20 years as French citizens took to the ballot box to make their feelings known: they did not want the far-right to govern.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq00083b6kc97empks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, with the left falling short of the 289 seats needed for a majority and with a weakened&nbsp;president, the national assembly is expected to be more fractured than ever.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq00093b6kyp7ejx53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            What\u2019s certain is that France is set to enter a prolonged period of instability as three opposing blocs with competing ideas and agendas try to form coalition or find themselves stuck in a state of paralysis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000a3b6kw3jlqaog@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Visibly disappointed, the far-right National Rally (RN) leader Jordan Bardella argued that&nbsp;his&nbsp;party\u2019s defeat was only made possible by the tactical voting orchestrated by&nbsp;Macron and the&nbsp;left-wing&nbsp;NFP&nbsp;coalition that&nbsp;decided to withdraw 200 candidates from the race this week in an effort to block the far right.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000b3b6kpnbz9k9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Though the RN didn\u2019t do as well as expected, it is still a victory for French far-right doyenne Marine Le Pen with her party&nbsp;getting more votes with each passing election. 8 in 2017, 89 in 2022, 143 in 2024 \u2013 the latter with the help of allies.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000c3b6krh9085mx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For the left-wing&nbsp;NFP alliance,&nbsp;it is&nbsp;going to have a tough time speaking with one voice. The last time&nbsp;it formed a bloc under the name of Nupes, in 2022,&nbsp;it&nbsp;fell apart&nbsp;because of personal differences as well as policy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000d3b6khs7qvkev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The bloc brings together five different parties. Far-left France Unbowed and the&nbsp;Communist party&nbsp;has&nbsp;joined with the center-left parties, the socialists and the greens to form&nbsp;a&nbsp;New Popular Front. Now&nbsp;the challenge&nbsp;is no longer whether&nbsp;the left&nbsp;can unite against the far right, but rather can&nbsp;the different groups&nbsp;work together to agree first on who might be prime minister from their camp \u2013 and then on the policies they might pursue?    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clycbejrh000m3b6kkh06uwxd@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-instability-might-impact-internationally\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">    How instability might impact internationally<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000f3b6kd1rlxfor@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With such a divided parliament there is no hope for major structural reforms at a domestic level, the best&nbsp;the leftists can hope for are&nbsp;ad hoc alliances to vote through individual pieces of legislation.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000g3b6kwi9el5jf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s equally hard to imagine how the current constellation would allow France to play an important role regarding Ukraine.&nbsp;Macron in the past has vowed to continue supporting Ukraine militarily while&nbsp;Le Pen has said her&nbsp;party would prevent Kyiv using French-supplied long-range weapons to strike inside Russia&nbsp;and would oppose sending French troops.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000h3b6k3jtufka9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The left has remained relatively quiet on Ukraine &#8211; different parties from the coalition have slightly different stances &#8211; France Unbowed is against what&nbsp;it&nbsp;calls&nbsp;\u201cescalation\u201d&nbsp;with Russia.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000i3b6kc4o58r3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Macron\u2019s central bloc seems to have held up quite well,&nbsp;winning 163 seats. Even though it lost roughly&nbsp;100&nbsp;MPs, it\u2019s a much better result than what the polls were suggesting, although we will see a shift in power from the Elys\u00e9e to the National Assembly.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clycbe9wq000j3b6k4e4njp34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Macron\u2019s gamble may have prevented the far right from coming to power, but it could&nbsp;yet&nbsp;plunge the country into chaos.
