{"id":5547,"date":"2024-07-20T15:08:29","date_gmt":"2024-07-20T15:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/20\/greeks-grieve-turks-celebrate-as-cyprus-marks-50-years-of-division\/"},"modified":"2024-07-20T15:08:29","modified_gmt":"2024-07-20T15:08:29","slug":"greeks-grieve-turks-celebrate-as-cyprus-marks-50-years-of-division","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/20\/greeks-grieve-turks-celebrate-as-cyprus-marks-50-years-of-division\/","title":{"rendered":"Greeks grieve, Turks celebrate as Cyprus marks 50 years of division"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu237rl000meznp9l5bg8mc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Air raid sirens wailed across Cyprus\u2019s divided capital Nicosia at dawn on Saturday as Greek Cypriots mourned, and Turkish Cypriots celebrated, 50 years since Turkey invaded part of the island in response to a brief Greek-inspired coup.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu27ngy0003356kjioh09s7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The ethnically split island is a persistent source of tension between Greece and Turkey, which are both partners in NATO but are at odds over numerous issues.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu27ngy0004356ktnufohy2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Their differences were laid bare on Saturday, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attending a celebratory military parade in north Nicosia to mark the day in 1974 when Turkish forces launched an offensive that they call a \u201cpeace operation.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu282l50007356k7feuye8y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Later in the day, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis was due to attend an event in the south of the city to commemorate what Greeks commonly refer to as the \u201cbarbaric Turkish invasion.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu285ye0009356ko8opf25t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mitsotakis posted an image of a blood-stained map of Cyprus on his LinkedIn page with the words \u201cHalf a century since the national tragedy of Cyprus.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu285ye000a356kb6h3bxhu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There was jubilation in the north.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu285ye000b356kymin4ldc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe Cyprus Peace Operation saved Turkish Cypriots from cruelty and brought them to freedom,\u201d Erdogan said, criticizing the south for having a \u201cspoiled mentality\u201d and seeing itself as the sole ruler of Cyprus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu28lkt000d356k70690sfw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Erdogan left open a window to dialogue in deadlocked negotiations. \u201cWe are ready for negotiations, to meet, and to establish long-term peace and resolution in Cyprus,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu28nzx000f356ka03r3pik@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Peace talks are now stalled at two seemingly irreconcilable concepts &#8211; Greek Cypriots want reunification as a federation. Turkish Cypriots want a two-state settlement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu28nzx000g356khyns51z7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cyprus gained independence from Britain in 1960, but a shared administration between Greek and Turkish Cypriots quickly fell apart in violence that saw Turkish Cypriots withdraw into enclaves and led to the dispatch of a UN peacekeeping force.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu292vx000i356k7fnckotn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The crisis left Greek Cypriots running the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus, a member of the European Union since 2004 with the potential to derail Turkey\u2019s own decades-long aspirations of joining the bloc.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clyu29arn000k356kz0yvtsxp@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"remembering-the-dead\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Remembering the dead<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu29k50000m356k3ahjyyhc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, whose office represents the Greek Cypriot community in the reunification dialogue, said the anniversary was a somber occasion for reflection and for remembering the dead.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu2a9ue000o356k591ozxqb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOur mission is liberation, reunification and solving the Cyprus problem,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we really want to send a message on this tragic anniversary \u2026 it is to do anything possible to reunite Cyprus.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu2aqs9000q356kmzuhudx4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Turkey, he said, continued to be responsible for violating human rights and international law over Cyprus.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu2aqs9000r356krhh4m6ip@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Across the south, church services were held to remember the more than 3,000 people who died in the Turkish invasion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu2aqs9000s356kw9e9cp4n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt was a betrayal of Cyprus and so many kids were lost. It wasn\u2019t just my son, it was many,\u201d said Loukas Alexandrou, 90, as he tended the grave of his son at a military cemetery.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu2aqs9000t356k1ki8mxen@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Turkey, state television focused on violence against Turkish Cypriots prior to the invasion, particularly on bloodshed in 1963-64 and in 1967.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu2aqs9000u356k3082ov46@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Turkey\u2019s invasion took more than a third of the island and expelled more than 160,000 Greek Cypriots to the south.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clyu2aqs9000v356ksflrd55b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Reunification talks collapsed in 2017 and have been at a stalemate since.
