We wish you could hear the cries and screams our consciences will not let us forget.\u201d<s><\/s>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty60007356ktht6rpq9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Many in the group have public health backgrounds and experiences volunteering in other conflict zones such as Ukraine and Iraq, according to the letter. \u201cWe believe we are well positioned to comment on the massive human toll from Israel\u2019s attack on Gaza, especially the toll it has taken on women and children,\u201d reads the letter posted to X on Thursday by Dr. Feroze Sidwa, who spearheaded the writing of the letter with the other physicians.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2zaihh000u3b5vfzdb9s49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe believe our government is obligated to do this, both under American law and International Humanitarian Law, and that it is the right thing to do,\u201d the letter said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clz2v2n100014356k72a8nw8f@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"the-only-independent-monitors-in-gaza\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        The \u2018only independent monitors\u2019 in Gaza<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2z13yi00003b5vbqeu135b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn Gaza, there\u2019s no independent monitor,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you\u2019re not going to believe the Palestinians, then you should believe 50 doctors who\u2019ve gone there at different times and places.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty7000j356kelgv7q4j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Apart from Palestinian journalists living in Gaza, there has been no media access to the enclave since October 7, with a few exceptions of entry under official escort.<s> <\/s>    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000k356kzsu9et3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hamawy signed the letter to recount what he saw with his own eyes.&nbsp;\u201cWe all saw a complete devastation of a society, of people\u2019s lives, of health care structure,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000l356kher4y1j6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hamawy has worked as a surgeon in Sarajevo, in New York City on 9\/11, and in Iraq, where he performed life-saving surgery on US Senator Tammy Duckworth in 2004 after her helicopter was hit by an RPG.  But he said those experiences in other conflict zones were not comparable to what he had witnessed in Gaza, adding that 90% of those he had seen killed there were women and children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000n356kxahil980@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hamawy worked at the European Gaza hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis in May of this year where he performed about 115 reconstructive surgeries and treated mostly children under 14 years old. He worked on amputations, burns, and<s> <\/s>gunshot wounds to the face, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000q356kzlmw6qlk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another patient was a little boy who picked up what he thought was a can of tuna to bring back to his family in Rafah, Hamawy recalled. But the metal object was in fact an unexploded cluster bomb, according to Hamawy, who said that after opening it in front of his family, the child lost his left arm, both his legs, and three fingers on his right arm.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clz2v481d0017356klzd9ovae@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"no-kid-gets-shot-twice-by-a-sniper-by-mistake\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018No kid gets shot twice by a sniper by mistake\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000t356kgl218se2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The photos were sent to him by a first-year medical resident who had been forced to perform the surgery and requested Perlmutter\u2019s expertise. When Perlmutter asked why senior surgeons hadn\u2019t done the operation, the resident explained that they had been killed in a bombing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000v356kf29i4hvq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Describing a hospital overrun, Perlmutter said after every bombing, he would find injured children laid across the floor, their loved ones panicking and crying.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000w356kjpnh2anm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cSome are dead, some will die in front of you, and some you can save. You try to save the ones you can save,\u201d Perlmutter said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty8000x356k0k7drb4j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He recalled two patients aged around six years old, who had suffered gunshots to their heads and chests \u2013 wounds which suggested they had been deliberately targeted, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2z4ok400053b5vxv5p9erh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cNo kid gets shot twice by a sniper by mistake,\u201d Perlmutter said, adding that the shots were \u201cdead center\u201d to their chests.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2uzty9000z356k2cb0vqm2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As Perlmutter tried to treat the children with head injuries, he said, their \u201cbrains poured out\u201d in his hands, in what he described as a personally traumatic moment.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clz2z8qiy00093b5vg6iizl1p@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"everyone-in-gaza-is-sick-injured-or-both\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Everyone in Gaza is sick, injured, or both\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2z8wyl000d3b5v7idenc3f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Launched in response to Hamas-led terror attacks in Israel on October 7 which killed at least 1,200 people, Israel\u2019s monthlong military offensive in Gaza has left more than 39,000 Palestinians dead, according to the Gazan Health Ministry. The letter\u2019s signatories estimate that the true toll of the war could be in excess of 92,000, if it included deaths from starvation or disease and bodies still buried under the rubble.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2zduvi00183b5v1sbl8wzh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">             Last week the World Health Organization said the polio virus had been found in sewage samples, putting thousands of Palestinians at risk of contracting a disease that can cause paralysis.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2z8wyl000f3b5vxvxobvk6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Under such conditions, the American medical workers warned that epidemics could lead to the deaths of tens of thousands more children. The displacement of people to areas with no running water or toilets \u201cis virtually guaranteed to result in widespread death from viral and bacterial diarrheal diseases and pneumonias, particularly in children under the age of five,\u201d the letter said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2z8wyl000g3b5vkp96sfjg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cEveryone in Gaza is sick, injured, or both,\u201d with few exceptions, their letter said.&nbsp;\u201cWe are not politicians. We do not claim to have all the answers.
