At least eight people were stabbed in the northern English town of Southport on Monday, with some of the victims being transferred to a children\u2019s hospital, ambulance officials said. <\/p>\n

Merseyside Police said it received reports of a stabbing and emergency services were called to a \u201cmajor incident\u201d in the town at around 11:50 a.m. local time (6:50aET). <\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a number of reported casualties and more details will be confirmed when possible. Armed police have detained a male and seized a knife. He has been taken to a police station,\u201d police said in their latest statement. \u201cPlease avoid the area while we deal with this incident. There is no wider threat to the public.\u201d <\/p>\n

Local business owner Colin Parry was one of the people who called the police, said the incident in Southport was like a \u201cscene in a horror movie,\u201d according to PA Media. <\/p>\n

Parry said he believed a number of young girls had been stabbed. \u201cThe mothers are coming here now and screaming. It is like a scene from a horror movie,\u201d Parry said, adding that, \u201cpolice have got him.\u201d <\/p>\n

The businessman said he had directed police to an address in Hart Street behind the Hart Space studios, where one of the events listed at the time of the stabbings was a
Taylor Swift-themed yoga class for children ages six to 11, according to its website. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like something from America, not like sunny Southport,\u201d Parry said. <\/p>\n

The Alder Hey Children\u2019s Hospital Trust in Liverpool, about 20 miles from Southport, declared a \u201cmajor incident. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trust is working with other emergency services to respond to this incident and our Emergency Department is currently extremely busy,\u201d the hospital said in a statement posted to its website. \u201cWe ask parents to only bring their children to the Emergency Department if it is urgent,\u201d it said. <\/p>\n

The British MP representing Southport, Patrick Hurley says he was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about the \u201cincident.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI am hoping for the best possible outcomes to the casualties affected. My thoughts go out to all those affected, their loved ones and to the entire community,\u201d Hurley said on X. <\/p>\n
