At least 50 people died as a result.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2mzrzv00003b6k0mjyp7sa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            President William Ruto retracted the bill and announced a shake-up of his&nbsp;cabinet&nbsp;following pressure from demonstrators who remained on the streets, saying they were unhappy about alleged corruption and police brutality in his government. There have been some calls for him to resign.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz74g4n900003b6k38i2tgtt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kenya, East Africa\u2019s dominant economy, has grappled with escalating living costs that have spiked food prices and other commodities, amid a rising unemployment&nbsp;rate among the country\u2019s youth. The nation also owes billions of dollars in foreign and local debts, spending a sizeable chunk of its revenue&nbsp;repaying its creditors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz179gyy000p3b6kvbs65gpr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The unrest swiftly spread to neighboring Uganda, where citizens attempted to march to the parliament in the capital, Kampala, on July 23 and 25. Security forces responded with a heavy clampdown, detaining more than 100 people, according to police reports.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2nvtzy00003b6kfd85nnro@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those protesting are angry about widespread government corruption in the country, which loses an estimated Sh. 10 trillion&nbsp;($2.7 billion) in public&nbsp;funding to graft annually,&nbsp;according&nbsp;to Ugandan anti-corruption body the Inspectorate of Government (IG).    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz75fk4y00003b6kveeynsz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Radio host Faiza Fabz, who joined the protests, said on social media that the demonstration was an \u201copportunity to change the course of our nation\u201d and \u201cforce the leaders to finally listen to us and demands of the people.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz761z9g00043b6k0agu5fwa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some of those demands include \u201cauditing the lifestyle\u201d of MPs \u201cand publicizing it,\u201d and the resignation of lawmakers involved in corruption scandals, according to a newspaper front page she shared on social media platform X. Fabz was among the demonstrators detained by the Ugandan police.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz77zchj00003b6ky4pv4v63@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Uganda has witnessed some stability in its economy following \u201can oil-related construction boom and robust growth of agriculture,\u201d according to the World Bank.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz786eti00023b6klbwz2kdu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But it has also grappled with endemic corruption, scoring 26 last year on Transparency International\u2019s&nbsp;Corruption Perceptions Index,&nbsp;which ranks countries on a scale of zero to 100, with zero meaning \u201chighly corrupt\u201d and 100 signifying that a country is \u201cvery clean.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz6t21il000b3b6mdymh62zu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Several high-profile Ugandan politicians&nbsp;were sanctioned by the&nbsp;United States&nbsp;and the&nbsp;United Kingdom&nbsp;for corruption earlier this year, including the speaker of&nbsp;the&nbsp;country\u2019s parliament, Anita Annet Among, whom the protesters called on to resign.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz179gyz000r3b6k7cu3tftu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            President Yoweri Museveni, 79, who has ruled Uganda with an iron fist for nearly four decades,&nbsp;warned the protesters they were \u201cplaying with fire,\u201d and later praised the security forces for \u201cfoiling\u201d the protests,&nbsp;and claiming&nbsp;without evidence that they were orchestrated with \u201cfunding from foreign sources.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clz2kljtq00003b6mkvcnidtc@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"reality-check-for-african-leaders\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Reality check for African leaders\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz179gyz000s3b6kv1ekmfkl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Africa\u2019s most populous country, Nigeria, young people are also planning an \u201cend bad governance\u201d march on August 1.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2q7bj000003b6kdilrhmlc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Young Nigerians calling for protests want a respite from the country\u2019s economic woes as inflation skyrockets to more than 34%, its highest level in nearly 30 years, causing one of the nation\u2019s worst ever cost-of-living crises. Unemployment in the West African nation has also been on the rise, its data office said in its most recent report, in February.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz6teege000j3b6m1d023n2w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            They also want the country\u2019s security problems curbed amid a rise in kidnappings for ransom, among other demands, which include \u201creducing the cost of living, curbing insecurity, reducing the cost of governance, electoral reform, judicial reform, and constitutional reform,\u201d according to a signed statement from a group of civil society organizations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz742fvg00063b6mr8j52ord@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong said in an interview with Arise Television on Sunday: \u201cPeople are tired, people are hungry\u2026. Why does the president have to wait till the 1st of August? He can start this moment to effect the changes that people are asking for.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17f2ip001v3b6kjjjfb7cr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The last time a major protest occurred in Nigeria, security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters&nbsp;who were peacefully demonstrating against alleged police brutality, resulting in deaths and injuries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz179gyz000t3b6kmo6ls0aq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Fearful of a repeat of the 2020 #EndSARS protests, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called for calm and implored citizens not to take to the streets.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2ojxr200003b6k3cftueai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He warned that the planned protest \u201ccould degenerate into violence and set the country backwards,\u201d alleging that the upcoming march was being instigated by citizens with dual nationality.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2ojxr200013b6kykd0mf3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe sponsors of protests do not love our country \u2026 They do not understand citizenship. They have alternative passports. They are in different parts of the world holding meetings virtually,\u201d the president said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz179ohx000v3b6ko6cdfkhh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A Nigerian defense spokesman said the planned protest could replicate deadly demonstrations in Kenya.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17a7r4000x3b6k1dboi9xx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe context of this planned protest is to shadow what is happening in Kenya \u2026 and \u2026 what is happening in Kenya \u2026 is violent \u2026 and remains unresolved,\u201d spokesman Edward Buba said at a press conference, adding that \u201cthe military will not stand by and allow anarchy to befall our nation.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz6toeyj000w3b6mgfjldue9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            For Gift Mugano, an adjunct professor of economics at South Africa\u2019s Durban University of Technology, the youth uprisings are \u201ca reality check for African leaders.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz6tq42o00113b6m33sb8e6k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He added that \u201cas long as there are no economic opportunities, and governance and rule of law are not at their best, we will not have stability in the continent.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz6tqk3900133b6mxuf4ni15@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mugano advised African governments against cracking down on protesters, telling them to instead \u201cattend to issues affecting the continent, create economic opportunities and improve governance.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clz6tnf5p000u3b6m2jzh5d2k@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-growing-discontent\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A \u2018growing discontent\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17bgah00133b6k39ucjbix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere is a growing discontent among young people (in Africa) and those who are in charge should pay attention to this movement,\u201d Thior said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17zis3002b3b6k9grcurmm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He added that \u201cyoung people are impatient, and they want things to change at a very rapid pace.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17bgah00143b6khglbo7dz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to Thior, who leads the Senegalese media ethics organization CORED, youth activists across the continent are connected through social media, \u201cand that\u2019s why what is happening in Kenya can affect people in Uganda and even here in West Africa.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17bgah00153b6k3sh27c5j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Youth-led uprisings against corruption and bad governance have also erupted in other parts of Africa, including Senegal and Ghana, in recent months.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2qy09h00003b6klt92mh7l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Protests broke out in Senegal in February after its then-president Macky Sall announced a delay in the country\u2019s scheduled elections. Following demonstrations that left at least three protesters dead, Sall backtracked on the delay after the Senegalese constitutional council ruled against his decision to postpone the vote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2qy4rk00023b6kqrjbv3mh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The ruling coincided with the release of many political detainees, including current President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who was released just a little over a week before the election.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz2r18q600043b6kafjn4bef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the preceding months, Ghana, Senegal\u2019s fellow West African state, saw days of anti-government protests as demonstrators railed against economic hardships and unemployment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17bgah00163b6ktxwtqxk7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo warned that the continent was on the edge of chaos.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clz17bgah00183b6klpzcew7w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere\u2019s virtually no exception (country) in Africa where the youth are not angry.
