{"id":6206,"date":"2024-08-04T15:05:56","date_gmt":"2024-08-04T15:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/04\/israelis-fear-for-hostages-as-netanyahu-celebrates-crushing-blows-against-enemies\/"},"modified":"2024-08-04T15:05:56","modified_gmt":"2024-08-04T15:05:56","slug":"israelis-fear-for-hostages-as-netanyahu-celebrates-crushing-blows-against-enemies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/04\/israelis-fear-for-hostages-as-netanyahu-celebrates-crushing-blows-against-enemies\/","title":{"rendered":"Israelis fear for hostages as Netanyahu celebrates \u2018crushing blows\u2019 against enemies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clze9fnpt000vhgp1b44qgw3o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrates what he sees as major victories against Hamas and Hezbollah this week, the mood in Tel Aviv is far from celebratory.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh300003b6k3ms7fjub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Often bustling with crowds on a weekend, the coastal city of more than 400,000 residents was quieter than usual, with some attributing the subdued mood to fears of an Iranian attack in retaliation to the assassinations carried out against Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in recent days.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh300013b6k6ghuciu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was on \u201chigh alert,\u201d and Israeli supermarkets are reporting a spike in shopping for basic goods as citizens stock up.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh300023b6kw7l5mmzo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Wednesday, Netanyahu said that his country \u201cstruck crushing blows\u201d to the \u201cthe three H\u2019s\u201d \u2013 Hamas, the Houthis and Hezbollah, all Iranian-backed, all fierce Israeli foes. The prime minister was celebrating the assassination of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, Hezbollah military commander Fu\u2019ad Shukr and retaliatory strikes on the Houthis in Yemen last month.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh300033b6k4up2mz8h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hamas also blamed Israel for the assassination of their political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed on Wednesday in Tehran. Israel has not commented on the killing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh300043b6kcxybsnf9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Netanyahu\u2019s tone stands at odds with the mood on the ground in Tel Aviv, including among families of the hostages still in Gaza.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh300053b6kk94uc4ys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Four of Yifat Zailer\u2019s relatives are still held in Gaza by Hamas \u2013 Zailer\u2019s cousin Shiri and her husband Yarden, along with their two sons, Ariel, 4, and Kfir, who spent his first birthday in captivity in January.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh300063b6kifkwbsl5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Bibas boys remain the youngest of 111 hostages still held in Gaza since October 7, according to Israel\u2019s Prime Minister\u2019s Office and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh400093b6kucccm133@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI feel they (the government) don\u2019t hear it\u2019s enough; I feel they don\u2019t hear the people on the streets shouting, that our priority is getting the hostages back,\u201d Zailer said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000a3b6ke553fni6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Polls have repeatedly shown that most Israelis prioritize the release of hostages over continued war.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000b3b6kukr9nyez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A recent survey conducted by independent research center the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) showed that 56% of Israelis support a deal to release all the hostages and end the war in Gaza. It also showed that most right-wing Israelis have a greater appetite for the war.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000c3b6k4cfxa84c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA large majority of those on the left and in the center consider a deal for the release of hostages to be the highest priority,\u201d the survey said, \u201cwhile the majority on the right prioritize a military operation in Rafah.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000d3b6ku4f789fd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Zailer\u2019s family was taken from Kibbutz Nir Or on October 7, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and took 250 others hostage, according to Israeli authorities. Israel retaliated by waging a war in Gaza, which Palestinian authorities say killed more than 39,000 people in the enclave, most of whom are women and children.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000e3b6ksx25qrr7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The war has also displaced almost all of Gaza\u2019s population, flattened much of the strip and triggered a humanitarian crisis. But Netanyahu has said that the war will continue until Hamas is eliminated, a goal deemed unrealistic by his critics.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000f3b6kly6vl61x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hopes that a deal that would release Zailer\u2019s family, along with the more than 100 other hostages, have ebbed and flowed throughout the past ten months of war. The spike in tensions last week only raised the worst of fears.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000g3b6ksya9t9tm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Zailer worries she will wake up one day to find that all the hostages had been killed, she said, \u201cbecause they (Hamas) decided they have nothing to gain out of them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzeb4pyf000w3b6kzfi91kqh@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"were-waiting-for-an-attack\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018We\u2019re waiting for an attack\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000i3b6kdzlcxwba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As families worry for their loved ones in Gaza, those in Israel are bracing for a possible Iranian retaliation, a move that could plunge the Middle East into an all-out war that drags in other regional players and potentially the United States.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000j3b6k0qdnd6lz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Tel Aviv\u2019s main beach promenade, some Israelis are spending their Saturday swimming and surfing, knowing an Iranian attack could hit their city at any moment.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000l3b6kat3d5syi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe achievements (assassinations) are good, but let\u2019s get this thing over with. Let\u2019s get out. Let\u2019s finish this thing. We\u2019re tired, everyone is tired,\u201d Oved said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000m3b6k9xj1qjcs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Alona Lelchuk, 31, said this war feels different, however, mainly because there are hostages still in captivity.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzeb4gh4000o3b6kq0v58cq2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Netanyahu has been accused of losing focus of one of the main purposes of the war, which was to bring back those kidnapped. Without a ceasefire deal, they are unlikely to come home.
