But in the eyes of Beijing, that may not necessarily be good news.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w00083b6k6vx7wx28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Tim Walz moved to China fresh out of college in 1989&nbsp;to teach high school for a year, and then frequently returned to the country during a decade of taking American students on summer cultural exchanges.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w00093b6ktr6z1gty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The 60-year-old Minnesota governor has spoken fondly of his time in China and the people he met there, and his familiarity with the country and empathy for its people bring a personal, nuanced perspective on the United States\u2019 biggest strategic rival that is rare among his political peers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w000a3b6ke9s2gjlc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Some&nbsp;Republican opponents have seized on that experience to accuse Walz of being \u201cpro-China,\u201d but the Democratic vice-presidential nominee has a long history of criticizing authoritarian Chinese leadership.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w000b3b6k4ptv9zan@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Walz moved to China at a tumultuous and politically charged time, shortly after the Tiananmen Square massacre, when the ruling Communist Party sent tanks in to violently quell peaceful student-led democracy protests in Beijing. Upon returning home to Nebraska in 1990, he told a local newspaper he felt the Chinese people had been mistreated by their government for years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w000c3b6k6hz37a7v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIf they had the proper leadership, there are no limits on what they could accomplish. They are such kind, generous, capable people,\u201d he told the Star-Herald at the time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w000d3b6k6fer4jh3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            During his time in Congress from 2007 to 2019, Walz rallied support for imprisoned Chinese activists. He met with the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader loathed by Beijing, and Joshua Wong, the young Hong Kong democracy activist now jailed for his activism against Beijing\u2019s tightening grip.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w000e3b6keyn4za0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe more he understands China, the more he feels pity for the Chinese people, and the more critical he becomes of the rulers who govern them,\u201d said Shen Dingli, a foreign policy analyst in Shanghai.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6w000f3b6ka7lylyn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHe has some understanding of Chinese culture and respects it in his heart, but he definitely does not accept China\u2019s political (system),\u201d Shen added. \u201cBeijing is probably more fearful and uncomfortable with such a foreigner who understands China.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzma8j3v000p3b6kth24akao@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"it-was-more-about-the-people\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018It was more about the people\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6x000h3b6k4y4m2s49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Walz was among the first groups of young Americans to teach in high schools in China under a Harvard University volunteer program, just a decade after the two countries established diplomatic relations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6x000i3b6k4xzqhm8d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            As a fresh graduate, he spent a year teaching English and American history at the Foshan No. 1 High School,&nbsp;in the southern province of Guangdong.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6x000j3b6kqvf8iinj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            There, he was met with industrious and welcoming students who applauded him each time he used a Chinese word correctly, and friendly strangers who offered to help whenever he stopped in the streets looking bewildered, he told the Star-Herald in 1990.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6x000k3b6k2zelx3f5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI was treated exceptionally well,\u201d he told the newspaper. \u201cThere was no anti-American feeling whatsoever. American is \u2018It\u2019 in the eyes of the Chinese. Many of the students want to come to America to study.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6x000l3b6kra4l8rwh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            That was a different era in China. The impoverished country was curious about the world after emerging from decades of self-imposed isolation and tumultuous rule under Mao Zedong. Paramount leader Deng Xiaoping unleashed market reforms and, along with an economic opening, calls for political liberalization gathered pace in the 1980s.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8a6x000m3b6kruocvvqq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Such calls coalesced into a student-led movement in the spring of 1989, which was brutally put down by the Chinese military weeks before Walz\u2019s trip.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8v50000s3b6k2klw52y8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI remember waking up and seeing the news on June 4 that the unthinkable had happened,\u201d Walz told Voice of America in an interview in 2014.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma8w4a000u3b6k250jt57c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMany of my colleagues decided to go home and not to go on [to China]. I thought it was more important than ever to go, to make sure the story was told and to let the Chinese people know we were standing there, we were with them.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma974c000w3b6kjs60qnhm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            From Guangdong, Walz took a 40-hour cross-country train ride to the Chinese capital to see Tiananmen Square, the site of the democracy protests.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma982y000y3b6kk1zkyet9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He made sure he would always commemorate the crackdown in a personal way \u2013 by getting married on June 4, 1994, the fifth anniversary of the massacre.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma982y000z3b6ks04eukg2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHe wanted to have a date he\u2019ll always remember,\u201d his wife and fellow high-school teacher, Gwen, told a local newspaper in Minnesota before their wedding.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma982y00103b6kuxctiwp1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The newlyweds spent their honeymoon taking students on two-week tours in China for sightseeing and classes on culture, education and history. These trips became a summer tradition for the couple through 2003.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma982y00113b6kxjisp4l0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI would go back in a heartbeat,\u201d said Cara Roemhildt, who went on such a trip in 1998. \u201cIt was an educational trip with one of our favorite teachers. It was more about the people. It wasn\u2019t about the politics.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma982y00123b6kxcaqijhi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Roemhildt said she and her classmates still talk about the trip decades later.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzma9e4s00173b6kc72g9qsm@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-nuanced-critic\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A nuanced critic<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma982y00153b6kp2dfsj99@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After entering politics in 2006, Walz continued to devote time and attention to China in Congress.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma9pch001a3b6k8akmlivm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He served more than a decade on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, which monitors human rights and the rule of law in the country \u2013 a role Beijing would not be happy about.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma9q6t001c3b6kk73rtaqo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe Chinese government has always viewed that commission as \u2018anti-China,\u2019\u201d said Liu Dongshu, an assistant professor of public and international affairs at the City University of Hong Kong.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma9q6t001d3b6kc0x6qxak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Congress, Walz co-sponsored a series of resolutions calling on China to release its jailed rights activists, including Nobel Peace laureate Liu Xiaobo, who eventually died in custody of liver cancer.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzma9uo9001f3b6kdrutrs5i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2015, Walz joined a congressional delegation on a trip to China, which included a rare stop in Tibet, which he had also visited decades earlier&nbsp;during his time teaching at the Chinese high school.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa2bm001h3b6kjhembhtd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The following year, Walz met the Dalai Lama in Washington for what he called a \u201clife-changing lunch.\u201d He also welcomed Lobsang Sangay, then leader of Tibet\u2019s government in exile, into his congressional office to meet a group of Minnesota high-school students.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa393001j3b6ktv2kbhn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At a congressional meeting that year, he called on Beijing to \u201censure the preservation of traditional Tibetan culture\u201d and \u201cprovide less regulated religious freedom to the Tibetans.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa393001k3b6kkrcthvza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Walz has also been a vocal supporter of Hong Kong\u2019s pro-democracy movement.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa393001l3b6kg23temxr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2017, when Wong, the student protest leader, was jailed for his political activism, Walz posted a photo of himself and the young activist standing side by side to show solidarity with \u201call advocating for democracy in Hong Kong.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa8en001n3b6kcpy1bvyu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Walz also threw his support behind the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which sanctions officials responsible for human rights violations in the city, when the legislation&nbsp;appeared to be languishing in Congress.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa9az001p3b6k6mmwarfl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe knocked on every door when the #HKHRDA lacked momentum. Only Walz answered his,\u201d Jeffrey Ngo, a Hong Kong democracy activist now based in Washington, said on X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa9az001q3b6k2hcg4n5r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWalz is perhaps the most solid candidate when it comes to human rights and China on a major-party ticket in recent memory,\u201d Ngo said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaa9az001r3b6ky4bi3v97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On the diplomatic front, Walz has criticized China\u2019s unfair trade practices and its growing assertiveness in the South China Sea.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmagfhb002o3b6katt1qcnp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In Chinese nationalist circles, which have an outsized voice on policy debates in China, there are no rosy illusions about Walz.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmagosw002q3b6k2o8mn4v5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOn human rights and ideological issues, he has basically crossed all the possible red lines out there,\u201d Shen Yi, an international relations scholar known for his fiercely nationalistic views, wrote on social media.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaag2i001t3b6kvnm7doqb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But&nbsp;unlike more hawkish politicians, Walz does not believe in decoupling, and instead holds a more nuanced view on the geostrategic rivalry between the US and China.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaah9j001v3b6kxpvwtw83@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI don\u2019t fall into the category that China necessarily needs to be an adversarial relationship. I totally disagree,\u201d he&nbsp;said in an interview&nbsp;in 2016.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaah9j001w3b6ktrt5s4pc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe\u2019re on the same sheet of music, two of the world\u2019s great superpowers, there\u2019s many collaborative things we can do together.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaah9j001x3b6kbdvyispy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Stephen Roach, former chief of Morgan Stanley Asia, said the Harris-Walz ticket may provide \u201can important counterweight to the current venom of American Sinophobia.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmaah9j001y3b6kl9se9zzf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Walz\u2019s empathy for the Chinese people and appreciation of China\u2019s non-political aspects make him a harder case for Beijing to \u201cvillainize as an \u2018anti-China\u2019 foil\u201d than politicians that are hawkish on all dimensions, Eric Fish, a former Beijing-based journalist and author of \u201cChina\u2019s&nbsp;Millennials: The Want Generation,\u201d said on X.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzmac673002l3b6kcqzjrh3a@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-complex-country\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018A complex country\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmabzgg00263b6k0hll4qd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Walz\u2019s extensive experience with China makes him a rare figure in the race for the White House&nbsp;\u2013 at least since George H. W. Bush, who served as America\u2019s unofficial ambassador to Beijing in the mid-1970s before running for vice president and later president.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmabzgg00273b6kivdqmrzs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Bush\u2019s stint in Beijing would go on to influence his foreign policy \u2013 and help steer US-China relations through the tumultuous fallout of the Tiananmen crackdown.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzmabzgg00283b6kpexq61tu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But US-China relations are at a very different place now from the honeymoon period of engagement.
