Now they have to deal with it. I hope that it will not be in vain and that we will get peace.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001i3b6kl1bwq25q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that Kyiv\u2019s forces were&nbsp;pushing farther&nbsp;into Russia after claiming hundreds of square miles of its territory. Kyiv said its troops have been expanding on a \u201cbuffer zone\u201d inside Russia, which they say will better protect communities in northern Ukraine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001j3b6kyz1eyfvy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Fedorkovska, 21, came to the evacuation center with her 72-year-old grandmother, who was inconsolable after leaving her husband and the home they\u2019ve shared for 52 years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001k3b6knhfq36xn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The two women were among hundreds of Ukrainians evacuated from border areas in recent days. Fedorkovska, a student, said her 85-year-old grandfather insisted on staying behind, telling her: \u201cYou save your grandmother, and I will guard what we own.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001l3b6k93u1yb76@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The surprise counteroffensive brought a much-needed boost for Ukraine\u2019s military, but it has also&nbsp;left some Ukrainians, including Fedorkovska and her grandmother,&nbsp;worried about what will happen once Russia gathers enough troops to the area to push back.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001n3b6kcyxkqk46@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mariupol, in the Donetsk region, fell to Russian control in 2022 following months of besiegement and bombardment, thousands of reported deaths, and tales of horror and starvation.    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/graphic\/instances\/clzuqnwx00001356kx0y0rrwy@published\" class=\"graphic\">\n<div id=\"graphic-20240813-ukraine-russia-incursion\" class=\"graphic__anchor\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20240813-ukraine-russia-incursion\/index.html\" data-type=\"dailygraphics\" data-slug=\"20240813-ukraine-russia-incursion\" data-pym-src=\"https:\/\/ix.cnn.io\/dailygraphics\/graphics\/20240813-ukraine-russia-incursion\/index.html\"><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzuq8tc1000j356k77aqz3m4@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"russian-aerial-attacks\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Russian aerial attacks<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001o3b6khbxpfex0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nila Buhaiova, who works at the Department of Social Protection in the Sumy regional administration, said hundreds of people came through the center\u2019s doors in recent days.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001p3b6k30470r1j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe evacuation has intensified over this past week \u2026 when the shelling of the Sumy district started, people could not stay anymore, so they left. On Friday there were 270 people, on Saturday 382, and on Sunday 250,\u201d she said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001q3b6k5gz6u1ic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The numbers are dwarfed by the evacuations on the Russian side of the border. Local officials in the Kursk region said some 180,000 people there have been put under evacuation orders, with thousands more evacuated from neighboring Russian regions.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001r3b6klosoujen@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But for many&nbsp;Ukrainians, it\u2019s hard to feel sorry for their neighbors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001s3b6kag0o5pg5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Fedorkovska\u2019s grandparents stayed in their home in Myropillya after the war broke out in 2022, even though the village is surrounded by Russia\u2019s Kursk region on three sides and has been under frequent attack ever since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001t3b6kukjb9vp5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But the area has become too dangerous now that Ukraine has launched its surprise incursion.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001u3b6k8keuy05j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAfter the start of the Kursk operation, artillery and mortar attacks stopped because our guys drove them away from the border. But the attacks with guided bombs and aircraft have intensified. Now they can\u2019t reach us with artillery, so they shoot from the aircraft,\u201d Fedorkovska said, explaining why her grandmother had finally decided to evacuate.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001v3b6kggb3cryt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe want people to understand what it\u2019s like to live under constant shelling, to live in a place where you have lived your whole life, a place you put your heart and soul into, where you raised your children, went to school \u2026 and that you are forced to leave and move somewhere else because there\u2019s constant shelling now.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001w3b6ktk3cmw2a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Olena Lozko is an accountant from the Ukrainian village of Velyka Rybytsia, which sits about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Russian border. She too has left in recent days amid the intensifying attacks by Moscow\u2019s forces.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzupx2b60000356ksnw022dv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe are very happy that our soldiers are attacking, but we are very scared. We have nowhere to go, and we are very afraid of these glide aerial bombs,\u201d she said. \u201cThe situation is getting worse.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzupxbh50003356ktbt6e8vu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Russia\u2019s FAB-1500 guided glide bomb is a 1.5-tonne weapon nearly half comprised of high explosives. They are delivered by fighter jets from about 60-70 kilometers away, out of range of many Ukrainian air defenses.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzuobwij002c3b6khjw7aok7@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"you-attack-we-attack-too\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018You attack \u2013 we attack too\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd3001z3b6kkf7qajsv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            People farther away from the front lines hope that giving the Russians a taste of their own medicine could help bring the conflict to an end.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd300203b6kyelcj0ld@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s a signal to Russia that any action can cause a reaction. You attack \u2013 we attack too,\u201d said Borys Lomako, a caf\u00e9 owner from Kharkiv, Ukraine\u2019s second-largest city, which is also near the border with Russia.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd300213b6k3m44jysv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt\u2019s life-affirming to me that we\u2019re going to fight for our border, and we\u2019re doing more than just pushing [the Russians] back to the front line. You enter our territory, we enter yours. Psychologically this is a change of position in this war,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd300223b6kxgm4jdff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andrii Legin, a 40-year-old resident of the capital Kyiv, said he fears the response of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he called a \u201ccrazed dictator.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzuo8nd300233b6kkk0dsx3s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cRussia may respond in any way, starting with a completely frantic military response. Or perhaps some kind of shift will happen among the Russian people because the war has moved to Russian territory.
