Convicted of a variety of crimes, they see their service in defense of Ukraine as redemption and a chance at a new life without a criminal record.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wteund00033d5v1te72q35@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The catch for prisoners is that they are contracted to the military until the end of the war. There is also a considerable financial incentive: Wages range from $500 to $4,000 per month, depending on time spent on the front line, according to the Ukrainian defense ministry.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wtcdl500003d5vzpwns5i1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Among the recruits is Vitaly, 41, a recovered addict and a father-of-five. He asked to be identified by first name only for security reasons.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wthy6i000e3d5v17qc2srx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Perched on a tree stump, Vitaly mumbles: \u201cMy life was crazy. I grew up with bandits, as did all of our guys (in the unit).\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wthy6i000f3d5vjp5usoy0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But by joining the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, he saw an opportunity.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wthy6i000g3d5v1gx6l4bu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI need to turn the page of my life. My life was a mess. It\u2019s better to be useful here, to be around brothers \u2026 and a completely different social circle,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wthy6i000h3d5v4og06x74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He\u2019s been in the trenches for three months following a short, 21-day training period. Vitaly has no regrets about his choice to join the army, but he said he was naive about what to expect.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wthy6i000i3d5vcypw36wu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cLife is hard here, it\u2019s fun \u2026 but I didn\u2019t think it would be this hard,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wthy6i000j3d5vhjccfvh7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Life as an infantry soldier is particularly dangerous with casualties higher than other members of the military. Infantry soldiers are often exposed to Russian drone attacks and storming trenches as they traverse large expanses of land by foot.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wthy6i000k3d5v9rbd2zpy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vitaly recalls a particularly brutal drone attack on a comrade.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wtj87t00003d5vhfb2k60w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cHe was taken apart. It is so hard to watch\u2026 but what can you do? You can\u2019t help. You need to leave them behind because half of the man is already gone,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wtjmfo00023d5vs9oettzz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In June, the defense ministry launched an initiative that gives prisoners the chance to serve in the army, in exchange for freedom after the war.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wtllcj000h3d5vnfp8jg6x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With life on the front line more challenging than many expected, Vitaly now wishes that he\u2019d paid closer attention during his short training. He thinks it may have better prepared him for what was to come.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wtllcj000i3d5v4bttjden@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe were stupid and didn\u2019t take it seriously. We were not responsible; it was a mistake not to listen or pay attention,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm0wtxasi000q3d5v5c311c6c@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"keeping-the-peace\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Keeping the peace<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wtx5bj000l3d5vqv5rv2kz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ensuring there is no disruption to the peace in the unit is Oleksandr, the company commander.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu1zvc00033d5vnwyfbxqh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Vitaly\u2019s company commander Oleksandr is no stranger to convicts. He left his position as a prison guard in February 2022, when the war began. Now, despite his protestations, he is back in his old job \u2013 but this time, on the battlefield.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wtyrm300003d5vojwqalms@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey see me as a former prison guard, as a brother-in-arms, as a commander, everyone here lives as one family,\u201d Oleksandr, who also asked to be identified only by his first name, said of the soldiers, adding, \u201cI am a psychologist, father, mother, everything.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu2llk00063d5v5wb9lnff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Along with the 15 prisoners already in his unit, he\u2019s expecting a further 25 from the prison where he used to work.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu2opz00093d5v7xu5t91e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Oleksandr said that many&nbsp;convicts, like Vitaly, signed up with the aim of reforming themselves.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu3ioz000e3d5vuto1av62@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cMany of them have families in front of whom they were ashamed of what they did. They have children who are told that their father is a convict. When he joins the armed forces, he is no longer a convict \u2013 but a hero,\u201d Oleksandr said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu47v0000h3d5vzcev5daa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Still, morale may be Ukraine\u2019s only hope in Pokrovsk as Russian forces zero in on the town.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu5sm8000m3d5vo0kaiwmr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At sundown in the town, the streets empty and the artillery barrages begin.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu5sm9000n3d5vpfgqruiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Russian forces are only 8 kilometers (5 miles) away, according to a map dated September 10 from DeepState, a group that monitors the progress of Russian forces in Ukraine that has links to Ukraine\u2019s security services.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu5sm9000o3d5vn5pciaa8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Pokrovsk is a vital supply town for eastern Ukrainian forces fighting back the tides of Russian soldiers. Its capture would be a coup for Putin as he looks to take control of the entire region of Donetsk. It could result in a withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Chasiv Yar and the line of contact moving closer to the much larger cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu5rr7000k3d5v84q196q4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Oleksandr is aware of the unenviable task of holding the Russians at bay, but thinks his troops have a skill that others don\u2019t.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm0wu68n3000t3d5vp0qpljtx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe convict sub-culture is used to surviving.
