{"id":8199,"date":"2024-09-21T15:03:05","date_gmt":"2024-09-21T15:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/21\/mexican-president-blames-us-in-part-for-rise-in-violence-in-sinaloa\/"},"modified":"2024-09-21T15:03:05","modified_gmt":"2024-09-21T15:03:05","slug":"mexican-president-blames-us-in-part-for-rise-in-violence-in-sinaloa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/21\/mexican-president-blames-us-in-part-for-rise-in-violence-in-sinaloa\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexican president blames US in part for rise in violence in Sinaloa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b2x5nq000m5np901i782vp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador says the United States is partially responsible for a wave of violence in the state of Sinaloa&nbsp;that has left dozens dead in the past two weeks, with bodies repeatedly found on public streets and highways.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000p356kepfik83y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            L\u00f3pez Obrador&nbsp;suggested&nbsp;during a press conference Thursday that&nbsp;Washington helped stir up enmity between factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel after arresting two cartel leaders in the US.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000q356kpzlbfozj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On July 25,&nbsp;Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael \u201cEl Mayo\u201d Zambada was arrested along with Joaqu\u00edn Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez, son of drug kingpin \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzm\u00e1n, after they landed near El Paso, Texas on a small plane.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000r356kc79nwg5j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Zambada&nbsp;would later&nbsp;claim&nbsp;that&nbsp;he was \u201cambushed\u201d and \u201ckidnapped\u201d by Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez and hand-delivered to US authorities.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000s356kkgbizjvp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA group of men assaulted me, knocked me to the ground, and placed a dark-colored hood over my head,\u201d &nbsp;Zambada&nbsp;said&nbsp;in a statement&nbsp;released by his attorney&nbsp;in August, adding he was tied and handcuffed and forced into the back of a pickup, driven to a landing strip, and forced onto the US-bound private plane.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000t356k72yah248@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It remains unclear why Guzm\u00e1n L\u00f3pez surrendered to US authorities and brought Zambada with him.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000u356krvqpephk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Mexican president alleged the US Department of Justice had \u201cagreements\u201d with an organized criminal group that led to the arrest of Zambada, also referring to the operation as a kidnapping.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000w356k6n9xpmrm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            US Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar&nbsp;previously&nbsp;denied that Washington was&nbsp;involved in the operation that led to Zambada\u2019s arrest.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000x356kby3y9y8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt was not a US plane, it was not a US pilot, it was not our agents or our people in Mexico. This was an operation between the cartels, where one handed over to the other,\u201d he said&nbsp;on Aug. 9.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1bdccfl0001356kx27echh0@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"in-sinaloa-there-wasnt-the-violence-that-there-is-now\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018In Sinaloa, there wasn\u2019t the violence that there is now\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k000z356k3rxhnp7m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the weeks after the arrests, violent clashes erupted in Sinaloa between what Mexican authorities call rival factions loyal to Zambada and those led by other sons of \u201cEl Chapo.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k0010356kdl62z3g1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The surge in violence has left at least 49 people dead since September&nbsp;9, according to official figures.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k0011356krnfi201b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The state prosecutor\u2019s office has reported numerous cases of dead bodies being found with gunshots in the streets, on highways and in other locations across Sinaloa.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b9zl8k0012356k1juxludp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The situation forced Gov.
