He accused Aqil and the commanders of planning to raid and occupy communities in Galilee in northern Israel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b11r6600003b5vevlcb14p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Hezbollah has not confirmed the deaths.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b0dt0l00013b6k565al6l2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Lebanon\u2019s health ministry said at least 12 people were killed and 59 others injured in the airstrike, which leveled a multistory building in a densely populated neighborhood.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b0exyt00043b6kblbjevpv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            According to Hagari, the targeted commanders were \u201cunderground underneath a residential building in the heart of the Dahya neighborhood, using civilians as a human shield\u201d at the time of the attack.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1aw6rl100053b6k3k3yvicx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Aqil had a $7 million bounty on his head from the United States for his suspected involvement in the 1983 strike on the US Embassy in Beirut, which killed 63 people, as well as the bombing of the Beirut Marine barracks, which killed 241 US personnel later that year.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1b1f66a00093b5vds2tk7mv@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-week-of-surprise-attacks\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A week of surprise attacks<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1aw6rl100073b6kcyxlqroy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Friday\u2019s strike marked the fourth consecutive day of surprise attacks on Beirut and other sites across the country, even as Israeli forces continued deadly strikes and operations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1aw6rl100083b6k6exu7akm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The first major attack against Hezbollah this week came Tuesday afternoon when pagers belonging to the militant groups\u2019 members exploded near-simultaneously. The pagers had been used by Hezbollah to communicate after the group\u2019s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, encouraged members to switch to low-tech devices to prevent more of them from being assassinated.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1aw6rl100093b6kzz267p5e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Almost exactly 24 hours later, Lebanon was rocked by a second wave of explosions, after Hezbollah walkie-talkies detonated in Beirut and the south of the country on Wednesday.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1b18cpr00013b5vvlowy9qv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            At least 37 people were killed, including some children, and more than 3,000 were injured in the twin attacks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1aw6rl1000a3b6kpsld9496@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After initially refusing to comment on Tuesday\u2019s pager explosions, Israel on Wednesday tacitly acknowledged its role in the attacks. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant praised the \u201cexcellent achievements\u201d of the IDF, together with the country\u2019s security agency, the Shin Bet, and its intelligence agency Mossad.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1aw6rl1000b3b6kqncmwogq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Gallant said a \u201cnew era\u201d of war was beginning, and on Thursday Israel targeted Beirut for a third time, flying jets and dropping flares over the city while Nasrallah made a speech in which he pledged Israel would face a \u201creckoning.\u201d Later, Israel launched one of its most intense bombardments against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon in nearly a year of cross\u2013border strikes, saying it hit about 100 Hezbollah rocket launchers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1aw6rl1000c3b6kar8pjg5a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Friday\u2019s airstrike was the third Israeli airstrike on Beirut since hostilities began last year, after Hamas\u2019 October 7 attack on Israel. In January, an Israeli airstrike killed Saleh Al-Arouri, deputy head of Hamas\u2019 military wing, who had been living in Beirut. In July, a second Israeli strike on Beirut killed Hezbollah\u2019s most senior military official, Fu\u2019ad Shukr.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1awnqa900023b6kzj9lr14i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Before the surprise attacks on Lebanon, Israel\u2019s security cabinet on Monday voted to add a new objective to its ongoing conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah: ensuring the safe return of residents from communities along its northern border with Lebanon to their homes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1awt9pi00063b6kbcxqe3ky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            After nearly a year of cross-border exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel, tens of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes both in southern Lebanon and northern Israel.
