But they have not gotten any smaller either,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1dvhzz0000c3b6kg6r6ezd2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Three-quarters of those who voted for the SPD did not do so out of conviction but rather to fend off the AfD, according to the exit poll published by broadcaster ARD. Turnout rose to 73% from 61% five years ago, according to ZDF.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1dvhzz0000d3b6k09tlj7gm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The SPD is polling just 15% at national level, down from the 25.7% it scored in the 2021 federal&nbsp;election. That is behind&nbsp;the AfD on around 20% and opposition conservatives on 32%.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1dvhzz0000e3b6kr6eblo32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            All three parties in Scholz\u2019s ideologically heterogeneous coalition&nbsp;combined are&nbsp;currently polling&nbsp;at around&nbsp;30%,&nbsp;less than&nbsp;the conservatives alone.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1dvhzz0000f3b6ka0bc2zz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The coalition has come under fire for its constant bickering and for its handling of immigration. In the formerly Communist-run East, many voters are also critical of its delivery of weapons to Ukraine to help it fend off Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1dvi3yb000p3b6k2z3na7b8@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"no-time-for-complacency\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        No time for complacency<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1dvhzz0000h3b6kcsjeblnz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The vote in Brandenburg comes three weeks after the Russia-friendly AfD became the&nbsp;first far-right party&nbsp;to top a state election in&nbsp;Germany&nbsp;since World War Two, in Thuringia. It also performed strongly in neighboring Saxony, coming hot on the heels of the conservatives in second place.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1dvhzz0000i3b6kguc94hes@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Woidke warned against complacency, noting the AfD was still gaining momentum.
