Macron\u2019s centrist Ensemble&nbsp;came second&nbsp;and Marine Le Pen\u2019s far-right party, National Rally&nbsp;(RN),&nbsp;placed third.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z00053d5v1nmyi9yi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Initially, RN was closer to the gates of power than ever before,&nbsp;then&nbsp;foiled mainly due to scores of left-wing and centrist candidates withdrawing from the second round in a&nbsp;strategic&nbsp;bid to avoid splitting the vote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z00063d5vm0lwc8pc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But Macron\u2019s prime minister and cabinet bear little resemblance to July\u2019s parliamentary&nbsp;election&nbsp;results.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z00073d5v9z3i4ef7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The right-wing-heavy cabinet looks certain to spell more political turmoil in a country tired of its president.&nbsp;At risk of collapsing before the year is out, the new&nbsp;lineup&nbsp;will have to do a delicate dance with the far right in order to survive.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z00083d5vl5rqaupg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Drawing ministers from conservative and centrist ranks, Barnier is still running a minority government. And with the left-wing coalition vowing to topple it at the first available opportunity, his best chances of surviving a no-confidence vote is with&nbsp;RN\u2019s&nbsp;tacit support.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z00093d5vec34e9ey@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            By pandering to the right, Macron hopes his government can safeguard his legacy after the left pledged to repeal some of his key policies, such as controversial pension reforms.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z000a3d5vt7suuhp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            New faces include veteran conservative Bruno Retailleau at the interior ministry whose hardline stance on immigration appeals to the&nbsp;far right.&nbsp;The 63-year-old former senator&nbsp;also&nbsp;opposed gay marriage and voted against enshrining abortion rights in the French constitution.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z000b3d5vj1d376br@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Despite winning the&nbsp;most seats in&nbsp;July\u2019s vote, the left-wing alliance was not given a single position on the 39-member team.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z000c3d5vbvlzy51u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cA government of the general election losers\u201d&nbsp;is how French far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Melenchon labeled the new cabinet shortly after it was announced. Meanwhile, RN leader Jordan Bardella said the government \u201chad no future whatsoever\u201d and that it was a return to \u201cMacronism.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z000d3d5v5k8ov117@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With Macron unable to dissolve parliament for at least a year from the&nbsp;election, concessions on immigration, security and taxes will have to be made to placate the far right and&nbsp;get bills adopted by the&nbsp;577-seat&nbsp;assembly.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z000e3d5v9hp6k9ns@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            One of Barnier\u2019s priorities is to submit a 2025 budget plan addressing France\u2019s mounting deficit and putting forward unpopular spending cuts. Barnier could invoke a controversial constitutional tool \u2013 article 49:3 \u2013 to push it through, though this would expose the government to a vote of no confidence as the parliament would need to approve it.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z000f3d5vgeb4qcd5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Furthermore, that would risk the same ire Macron\u2019s penultimate government suffered when he used this constitutional clause to push through everything from budgets to pension reforms.&nbsp;Since then,&nbsp;49:3 has become a byword for Macron\u2019s Jupiterean style of government: impatient of consensus and seen by many as disrespectful of the will of voters.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1gcgc3z000g3d5vbqo7inci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Whether through political survival or shrewd politicking, the ironies of Macron\u2019s latest government are striking. The president \u2013 a former left-wing minister \u2013 is now beholden to the support of the far right.
