But the road is still long,\u201d the prime minister told Francis. \u201cIf something goes wrong, we can\u2019t accept cover-ups. It harms the precious work done by everyone. And that\u2019s why words are not enough today. Concrete steps are needed. The victims must be heard. They must occupy a central place. They have the right to the truth.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy00053b6k53t9d4w7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He added: \u201cIn order to look forward, the Church must clarify its past.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy00063b6kovyjkt1o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In his remarks, Francis compared the church\u2019s abuse crisis to the biblical story of King Herod\u2019s order that all male children aged two and older be executed.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy00073b6kf9ah5vb7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis is the shame, the shame that we must all take in hand today and ask for forgiveness and solve the problem, the shame of abuse, of child abuse,\u201d the pope said. \u201cWe think of the time of the \u2018Holy Innocents\u2019 and say \u2018what a tragedy. What did King Herod do?\u2019 But today, in the Church itself there is this crime.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy00083b6kxmki5mkt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He said that \u201cthe Church must be ashamed and ask for forgiveness and try to resolve this situation with Christian humility and put all the possibilities in places so that this doesn\u2019t happen again.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy00093b6kaohfdc3m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The 87-year-old pontiff, who is on a three-day visit to Belgium after spending a day in Luxembourg, insisted that abuse is a \u201cscourge that the church is firmly and decisively by listening to and accompanying those who have been wounded, and by implementing a prevention program<s> <\/s>throughout the world.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy000a3b6k6e6ltnjq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Appalling revelations of clerical sexual abuse have emerged in Belgium over the last 30 years including the case of a former bishop who abused two of his nephews. The scandal has loomed large over the pope\u2019s trip, during which Francis was also expected to meet 15 abuse survivors.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy000b3b6k6yi41slb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Meanwhile, the Belgian church has also been caught up in a forced adoption scandal with an investigation by a Flemish newspaper indicating that Belgian nuns had been involved in an estimated 30,000 cases where newborns were taken from their mothers between 1945 and 1980. Most of the cases involved young, unmarried women whose parents wanted the pregnancies kept under wraps.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy000c3b6kppby7jcr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Francis also addressed this scandal in his remarks, saying: \u201cI was saddened to learn about the practice of \u2018forced adoptions\u2019 that also took place here in Belgium between the 1950s and the 1970s. In those poignant stories, we see how the bitter fruit of wrongdoing and criminality was mixed in with what was unfortunately the prevailing view in all parts of society at that time.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy000d3b6kw4f4pkuo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The pope said these cases occurred because the \u201cfamily and other actors in society, including within the church\u201d thought giving up children for adoption was a way to avoid the unfortunate stigma which fell on \u201cunmarried mothers.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1kqycdy000e3b6kpbyzzch4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He said the lesson from the adoption scandal is for the church \u201cnever [to] conform to the predominant culture\u201d even if that culture superficially aligns with the church\u2019s values.
