Its tiled roof has caved in, windows smashed, littering the floors with sharp shards of terracotta and glass \u2013 the debris, still untouched, of a day of horror for Israel.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqi8dg00073b6mg5vs23sl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThis house tells the story of Be\u2019eri,\u201d says Yarden Tzemach, a farmer and surviving resident of the kibbutz, one of the Israeli communities near Gaza that was overrun by Hamas militants last year.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqglm000003b6ml4qdy4eu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIn this house, people were murdered. A family, including three children, were kidnapped from here,\u201d he says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqizoj000d3b6m2uomfaz2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Outside, beneath the fruit trees in the back yard, a toddler\u2019s ride-on toy car, adorned with stickers of Winnie the Pooh, sits amid the rubble, a stark reminder of the lives shattered here.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqizoj000e3b6mqxz2a5hx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In some neighborhoods of Be\u2019eri, barely a building was left intact. More than 100 of its 1,100 residents were killed and another 30 abducted to Gaza on October 7.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqinqw000b3b6mpajc7sza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Home after home was burned out or reduced to rubble and \u2013 a year on \u2013 many remain as poignant monuments to an ongoing trauma. At least 10 residents of the kibbutz, all friends and neighbors of each other, are among the more than 100 Israelis believed to still be held hostage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1usgufl001j3b6m6hfvzx7x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Progress on a ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas has repeatedly fallen apart to the anger and despair of hostage families.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1uqlgy100043b6mj712ewey@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"best-recovery-is-coming-home\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018Best recovery is coming home<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqk66200003b6mijvpjby2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In the main administration building of Be\u2019eri, two large aerial photographs hang side by side near the entrance. One is an image of the kibbutz from April 2023, showing ordered rows of neat, white buildings set in lush gardens. The other, taken just after the October 7 attack, shows the same homes blackened and destroyed in the militants\u2019 rampage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqo1x800063b6mwen3jp3m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThey killed my sister over there,\u201d says Amit Solvy, pointing to a house on the map, five rows in from the fence that runs around the kibbutz.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqtp6v00143b6ma7dla8ht@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Elsewhere in the administration building, two posters are taped in a window \u2013 one showing the names and faces of the kibbutz residents who were killed, and another listing those who are held hostage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqkfao00023b6mg18n10ee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Solvy, the Be\u2019eri finance chairman, himself an Israeli veteran of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, is one of nearly 100 residents to have so far returned. Despite his personal loss, he came back to his house three months ago and is now helping lead efforts to bring kibbutz Be\u2019eri, formerly a self-sustaining farming community, back to life.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqprwb000b3b6mcgmjvthc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI said to all the people that the best recovery is coming home. This is the best emotional recovery, in my opinion,\u201d says Solvy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqo3xc00093b6m06bmivtq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But he acknowledges not everyone feels the same, estimating that up to 15% of the surviving residents of Be\u2019eri may never return because of the trauma and the memories of October 7.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqq7k1000g3b6m9csonzji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And many of those who want to come back, he says, are unable to do so until the extensive damage has been repaired and homes rebuilt \u2013 a massive renovation project that means it will be at least 2 years, according to Solvy, before the majority of residents can return home.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqq7k2000h3b6mvy6nse65@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThere is no infrastructure for kids, there are no schools, so people with families cannot come back yet,\u201d he explains.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm1uqrc74000j3b6me84hce30@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"there-were-terrorists-in-my-house\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        \u2018There were terrorists in my house\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqpzlt000e3b6mf7ojb869@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Work on the physical scars has already begun, with heavy machinery breaking ground on a new neighborhood of Be\u2019eri. New homes, untouched by the October 7 attack, are seen as an essential means of attracting the majority of the residents back.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqri8v000m3b6mwiyp721d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ayelet Hakim, her husband and their son, 12, and daughter, 5, live alongside many other Be\u2019eri survivors in government-supplied temporary housing in another kibbutz,&nbsp;Hatzerim, an hour\u2019s drive from the horrifying memories of what was their home.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqrx57000p3b6mpgc9rj70@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI sat in my safe room there for hours and hours not knowing what was going on, and feeling my life being threatened, my kid\u2019s life being threatened, because there were terrorists in my house,\u201d she adds.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqsv75000w3b6mxjeso6el@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Her son, Yehonatan, interrupts. \u201cI want to go back to Be\u2019eri, back to the house that I was living in. I don\u2019t care about the trauma,\u201d he pleads.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqsv75000x3b6mu8jkihmo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe house, no. The kibbutz, yes,\u201d asserts Ayelet.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqsv75000y3b6m5rm6ne3j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cKibbutz Be\u2019eri has been my home for the past 56 years. That\u2019s where I want to live,\u201d she says.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqsk95000u3b6mvvlgba4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But after so much death and destruction in Be\u2019eri, a community so close to Gaza, much must also be done to reassure residents they\u2019ll be safe.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1usuony001s3b6mdg9ozduk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In July, an Israel Defense Forces internal investigation into the events of October 7 concluded that the Israeli military had \u201cfailed in its mission to protect the residents\u201d and was ill-prepared for the mass Hamas attack.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uqsxuz00113b6m00vb0vm7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI believe it will be possible.
