{"id":8797,"date":"2024-10-08T15:03:51","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T15:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/10\/08\/mexican-mayor-killed-less-than-a-week-after-taking-office\/"},"modified":"2024-10-08T15:03:51","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T15:03:51","slug":"mexican-mayor-killed-less-than-a-week-after-taking-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/10\/08\/mexican-mayor-killed-less-than-a-week-after-taking-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexican mayor killed less than a week after taking office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zjcbns000m64qo1tu8497h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The mayor of a crime-ridden city in Mexico has been killed less than a week after taking office, the latest in a string of violent attacks targeting politicians in the country.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zjci0h00003b6mmzl56kih@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The killing of Alejandro Arcos, who took office as the mayor of Chilpancingo on October 1, comes just days after the city government\u2019s secretary Francisco Tapia was shot to death, and has renewed concerns over security in a country that recently held its biggest and most violent general election in history.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zjjktl000j3b6mvzeov4sv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            On Monday, Mexico\u2019s newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum called Arcos\u2019 killing \u201cunfortunate\u201d and said that her security cabinet would on Tuesday explain \u201cwith more details\u201d the actions being taken to address the nation\u2019s security problems.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zkciag000o3b6mpp77msh7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe will roll out the general strategy. We will work in some states with more presence, intelligence, and investigation in collaboration with the governors,\u201d Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zk96pm000m3b6mx0ushs3y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Chilpancingo is the capital of Guerrero, a state with a reputation for violent crime which is also home to the tourist hot spot Acapulco.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zkj4nb000t3b6m8b6oltai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The state governor Evelyn Salgado has condemned the killing and vowed to hold to account those responsible. \u201cHis loss is mourned by the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation,\u201d Salgado wrote on X.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zjcp3f00073b6ma24ysvwa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, the violence facing Mexican politicians stretches far beyond Guerrero, as was demonstrated by the historic June 2 election that took Sheinbaum to power.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zjcp3f000a3b6m46ihq4rs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            With 20,000 electoral positions up for grabs, the scale of bloodshed committed by those attempting to influence the vote was unprecedented.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zkyigi00193b6mkt46i479@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            During campaign season, at least&nbsp;34 political candidates were assassinated by criminal organizations. And the violence did not stop there.
