He knew about the quiet Ohio city through a friend and heard it had not only a low cost of living but also great work opportunities to match.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000d3b6m6s1qxiun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Why not?    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000e3b6m1d92638j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s a world better than what he was running from. Aula had been a police officer back in crime-wracked Haiti, until he wasn\u2019t. His house was burned down, he went into hiding, and was told people were coming to kill him.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000h3b6ms02uhq1z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While Aula has found opportunity in Springfield, he\u2019s also found himself in the middle of a bitter national debate on immigration heading into November\u2019s election, fueled in this case largely by rumors and threats.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000i3b6maifj41ho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The city of Springfield estimates there are between 12,000 and 15,000 immigrants living in Clark County, the county that holds Springfield, most of them believed to be Haitians arriving in just the past four years.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000j3b6mi8dkd8vw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The image of a city dramatically altered by immigration has been seized upon by former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance \u2014 who have made criticism of the Biden administration\u2019s immigration policy a cornerstone of their campaign.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000k3b6mkw1ohnp6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Trump falsely told about 67 million viewers that Haitians in Springfield were \u201ceating the dogs\u201d and \u201ceating the cats,\u201d during the presidential debate on September 10.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000l3b6mj80c5uuo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And Vance has made repeated false claims about Haitians, fueling rumors that they kill pets and do not have legal status in the country.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000m3b6m0nktwjb3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Trump is already threatening to deport Springfield\u2019s Haitian residents if elected.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000n3b6mrej8i0ww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cYou have to remove the people, and you have to bring them back to their own country,\u201d he told News Nation in an early October interview.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm271e00p00353b6mxx56xpf6@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-shot-at-a-new-life\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        A shot at a new life<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000p3b6mmmo9iw9t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Springfield is Aula\u2019s chance at a new life. He\u2019s taking English classes, but he\u2019s had so much to learn, namely how to get a job. Many in Springfield have been eager to help him, and to hire him.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlb000q3b6mtvk0pinw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Not long after he got to Springfield, Aula started working at Pentaflex, a company focused mainly on building metal stampings and assemblies for safety related functions like the brakes on a truck.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc000t3b6m8466y379@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cOr they\u2019d come in and they\u2019d work for half a day and they\u2019d just leave,\u201d he said. \u201cThat is, you know, a real problem when you\u2019re running a production facility. You need to have a reliable workforce that you can count on to be at work every day.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc000w3b6matsqrzke@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI don\u2019t know a person in this town that wouldn\u2019t want to get the hell out of (Haiti),\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc000x3b6mmte7uvg0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The rapid arrival of Haitians in Springfield has created both growing opportunities and pains. Some would come with any population increase; some have been specific to the culture differences and language barriers.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc000y3b6mgijxammj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Multiple city and state officials point to the population influx of Haitians as a major boost to Springfield\u2019s economy.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc000z3b6mcf39s9k8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Over the last several years, \u201cWe\u2019ve seen more growth than we\u2019ve seen for decades past,\u201d said Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck, including a \u201crevitalization and resurgence of our downtown.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00103b6m72b70x2a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The growing pains, however, were maybe encapsulated best by Springfield Mayor Rob Rue during a July 2024 City Commission meeting where he told a resident, \u201cWe were not in control of this.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00113b6m2j774qus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cWe didn\u2019t get a chance to have an infrastructure in place if there are going to be 20,000 more people from \u201820 to \u201825 \u2014 we didn\u2019t get to do that. So, the most frustrating thing is we\u2019ve got to spend tax dollars that were already in a flat budget, that we\u2019ve got to vote on to try to take care of 15,000 more folks that are here and make sure that everybody has a safe environment to be in,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00123b6mpvxfriim@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Springfield\u2019s growing population has put pressure on services like health care, including wait times for things like blood pressure screenings, vaccinations and more. Visits requiring interpreters also take longer, making lines stretch even further.&nbsp;It\u2019s part of why the state of Ohio helped open a mobile healthcare clinic, to try and ease some of those pressure points. State officials say they saw close to 100 patients in about a week\u2019s time, which exceeded expectations.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00133b6mxptmgutj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe system\u2019s been strained for a couple of years, we just now have people paying more attention,\u201d said Chris Cook, health commissioner for Clark County, which includes Springfield.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00153b6myqjie40l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Cook said they also encourage new mothers to be part of their Women Infants and Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program and hope to have appointments within 10 days of the baby\u2019s birth. But over time, waits grew to two months, he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00163b6mwzb0uq4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThat\u2019s not just our Haitian moms,\u201d Cook said. \u201cEverybody\u2019s in the same line.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm27m77dx00023b5v2ps16w3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Another major area of concern in Springfield has been housing, with signs of stress dating all the way back to 2018 in regard to availability and cost \u2014 years before Haitians began arriving after the Biden administration approved Temporary Protective Status in 2021 due to the violence, human rights abuses, and dire economic situation in Haiti.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00183b6mkqi7o3ay@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            City Manager Bryan Heck sent a letter to Sens. Sherrod of Ohio Brown and Tim Scott of South Carolina \u2014 then cc\u2019d Vance in July of 2024 \u2014 regarding \u201ca significant strain,\u201d regarding housing.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001a3b6m36nlca9l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Rent also went up, partly from the increased demand of a new population but driven also by the \u201cgreed of landlords,\u201d as Mayor Rue put it during a July City Commission meeting. Clark County jail data shows there are 199 inmates in our county jail this week. Two of them are Haitian. That\u2019s 1% (as of Sept. 8).\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001f3b6m0y8sy0o2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Andy Wilson, director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, said at a September press conference, \u201cThe No. 1 issue we have in the public safety space with the Haitians, it\u2019s not crime, it\u2019s not violence \u2014 it\u2019s the driving, that\u2019s the public safety issue. So, what we want to do is we want to get driver\u2019s education to that population.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001g3b6mvskw8yw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            It\u2019s an issue that state officials have found hard to immediately tackle, given that adults in Ohio can test for a driver\u2019s license and receive it without having to go through a formal training program.     <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001h3b6mzdwnp9wh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Governor Mike DeWine recently directed the Ohio State Highway Patrol to support Springfield Police with traffic enforcement \u201cto address the increase in dangerous driving in Springfield by inexperienced Haitian drivers and all others who disregard traffic laws.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001i3b6mf0u68tuk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While some Springfieldians gripe about the effects of immigration, others are stepping up. Cook and local United Way director Kerry Lee Pedraza, who grew up here, today co-chair what\u2019s known as the \u201cHaitian Coalition,\u201d which is a combination of private and public entities working behind the scenes to find solutions that work for everyone in Springfield, not just Haitians.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001j3b6mytmwetuv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 2022, at their first meeting, Pedraza said there were 45 people from different organizations who showed up. They\u2019ve only grown since then, but part of the problem recently is they have not had the \u201cfinancial resource to help us to continue to do it, and to do it at a speed where everyone in the community is going to feel that there\u2019s some relief.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001k3b6m0mpdfcnq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Regardless, the multilateral level of coordination across sectors has been \u201cincredibly effective,\u201d she said. \u201cIt actually could probably be a master class of how any community needs&nbsp;to come together around, take any social issue, and work together to create a really good solution.\u201d    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm271gitn003d3b6mc5naunmg@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"living-under-the-shadow-of-threats\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Living under the shadow of threats<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001o3b6mqqjui7yu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In early October, at least 70 people were killed, including three infants, in a gang attack in central Haiti, according to the United Nations Human Rights Office.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001p3b6mlpipfbo5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The UN reports more than&nbsp;3,600 people have been killed so far this year.&nbsp;Hundreds of thousands of Haitians have been forced to flee their homes after gang attacks.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001q3b6m3pnzpk3y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Given Haiti\u2019s anarchial unrest in recent years, Haitians were added to a Biden-Harris administration parole program, limited to only a few countries, that allows vetted participants to enter the United States as long as they are sponsored by US residents.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001r3b6mqtfupdpn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Others have Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a renewable program that shields some at-risk nationalities from deportation and allows them to live and work in the country for a limited period of time.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001s3b6mm8p9wpum@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas designated Haitians for Temporary Protected Status starting in 2021 and has subsequently extended and redesignated Haiti through February 2026.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001t3b6mt67bw811@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Those in the United States under the parole program are able to apply for TPS.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001v3b6m371yzurh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            She and her team have been working to provide free legal clinics assisting Haitians in Springfield and beyond who have arrived in the past two years assisting them with applications for TPS, asylum, work permits and more.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001w3b6mzlaal61r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Kersh said Haitians do hear Trump\u2019s comments about deportations, and even she \u201ccan\u2019t tell anyone that there\u2019s no likelihood&nbsp;that there could be some sort of mass enforcement action.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001x3b6m1uw1xo17@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            However, a broader revocation of previously granted parole or TPS would \u201cbe definitely challenged in the courts and probably successfully. So that\u2019s a big thing that we\u2019re trying to tell people, that it would be really, really procedurally and legally difficult for that to happen,\u201d Kersh said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc001y3b6mwf3kbetx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Still, many Haitian residents in Springfield live in fear of Trump\u2019s threat of removal, unsure over their future and their safety.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00203b6myiy7vi03@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But first, he made a stop with an immigration advocate to consider his options if there was any mass deportation effort that included him. He\u2019s been a little more nervous than usual lately.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00213b6m1onggerk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cAs I was walking down the road, a white man drove by and yelled Trump!\u201d Lebon said in Creole. Lebon took it as a threat.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00233b6mdsm03pxy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He said he had never dealt with anything like that since living in Springfield.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00243b6m7mtmimfk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cIt was peaceful here, understand, there were no such things. Everything started after the remark,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00253b6mfpy9h2pe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The \u201cremark\u201d in question came during the presidential debate in early September, but it all likely stemmed from August 28, 2024.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00263b6mjagqlfux@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            A Springfield resident reported to police that she suspected her Haitian neighbors of chopping up her cat after finding \u201cmeat\u201d in the backyard.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00273b6myta5emw8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Soon after, social media posts began circulating about pet-eating Haitians and were even promoted by neo-Nazi groups, some of which have shown up to Springfield in person marching against Haitians being there.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00283b6mxhuc3y70@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Just days after the initial police report, the owner\u2019s cat \u201cMiss Sassy\u201d was found safe in her basement. While the literal cat was found, the metaphorical cat was out of the bag, and the claims spread far and fast, eventually making its way onto the&nbsp;debate stage.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc00293b6m6ru0kaln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            First Vance\u2019s team picked up the rumors, with the senator claiming, \u201cYou have a lot of people saying \u2018my pets are being abducted\u2019\u201d and \u201c\u2019slaughtered right in front of us.\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002a3b6maqc5s7gj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And then Trump made the claim at the debate.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002d3b6mzxlc59w6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cTo see that continue to be retweeted by Vance himself the next day and then sitting there watching the presidential debate\u201d was \u201cdifficult,\u201d Heck said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002e3b6mg0sci0lh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Days after the presidential debate, city buildings and schools were hit with multiple threats of violence, prompting evacuations and cancellations of events. While state officials later said these threats ended up being hoaxes, many \u201cfrom overseas,\u201d they still prompted real evacuations and warranted a beefing up of security both for city officials and schools.    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm271hqyw003g3b6m4gozaq9d@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"gov-dewines-obligation-to-tell-the-truth\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">        Gov. DeWine\u2019s \u2018obligation to tell the truth\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002h3b6mdqr72hzp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine was born in Springfield, Ohio. While he grew up in a town nearby, he took his now-wife, Ohio first lady Fran DeWine, on dates to Springfield when they were both in high school.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002i3b6m3qpb8nyi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The DeWines fund a school in the dangerous Cit\u00e9 Soleil, an impoverished neighborhood in Haitian capital Port-au-Prince \u2014 an area entirely under gang control, where thousands of civilians live as a captive population.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002j3b6m6bvshgx9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            DeWine is also a Trump-supporting Republican. All those aspects of his life have collided this past month in a way he simply described as \u201ckind of strange.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002l3b6mzztdakyu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While DeWine readily acknowledges not everything has been perfect as the Haitian population has grown, he also said it\u2019s unmistakable that \u201cif you look at Springfield\u2019s growth in the last few years, that\u2019s been fueled, a lot of it by the Haitian immigrants who were taking jobs that were open.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002m3b6ms6aowkz6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He even said he had one employer \u201clook me in the eye\u201d and tell him, \u201c\u2019I don\u2019t think our company really would be here today if it wasn\u2019t for Haitians.\u2019\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002n3b6mt01mrnxk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Historically, Haitians are hardly the only group to immigrate to Springfield. For starters, \u201cThe Gammon House\u201d in Springfield was a stop on the Underground Railroad, serving as a symbol of a step toward freedom and a new life for the freed slaves in America. Some of the first Greek establishments opened in Springfield in the early 1900s, but the area also saw an influx of Germans, Irish, and later on Hispanics.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002o3b6mb1hmliee@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In 1970 the population in Springfield was around 82,000. The 2020 federal census showed a drop to around 58,000.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002q3b6mto8hrdzt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            While Trump\u2019s deportation threat may not be easily carried out, DeWine believes removing Haitians from Springfield would not be good for the city.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002s3b6m8cbvmscp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            But not enough of a mistake to change his vote.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002t3b6mtdwqvpfa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI support my party,\u201d he said. \u201cGoing against the nominee of the party, I think makes me a less effective governor of the state of Ohio.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002u3b6mm50hyc78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cI think the decision to who you support for president is based upon multiple issues,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002v3b6m6mvclecs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            And, he said, he is supporting the Haitian community.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm271cwlc002x3b6mrjn59oqi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Daniel Aula\u2019s fate may hang on how America votes on November 5.
