Canada announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats Monday, including the high commissioner, after the police accused agents of the Indian government of being linked to homicides, harassment and other \u201cacts of violence\u201d against Sikh separatists in the country.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d2zdr00003b6mk8728kfu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cGlobal Affairs Canada today announced that six Indian diplomats and consular officials had received a notice of expulsion from Canada in relation to a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens by agents linked to the government of India,\u201d read a statement shared by the department, which is headed by Canada\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs, M\u00e9lanie Joly.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29bg9iz00083b6mojzs57cu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The extraordinary step has sharply escalated diplomatic tensions between the countries, with India swiftly expelling six Canadian diplomats in response, including the acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, according to a statement from India\u2019s Ministry of External Affairs.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29d9nkw00023b6m3gscoe5s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The Indian government has called the accusations \u201cpreposterous\u201d and said it was withdrawing the officials expelled by the Canadian government. \u201cThere is a deliberate strategy of smearing India for political gains,\u201d the statement added Monday. \u201cThe aspersions cast on (High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma) are ludicrous and deserve to be treated with contempt.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29bf2jg00003b6m2xg7d576@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Joly said in a statement that the decision to expel the diplomats \u201cwas made with great consideration and only after (Canadian police) gathered ample, clear and concrete evidence which identified six individuals as persons of interest in the Nijjar case,\u201d referring to the assassination on Canadian soil last June of prominent Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29g8n3800053b6modmbw2c0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Earlier on Monday, the Royal Canada Mounted Police (RCMP) took the unusual step of publicly disclosing details of multiple investigations into the involvement of Indian government agents alleged to have taken part in \u201cserious criminal activity\u201d in Canada.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29bg9iz000a3b6mwhiwkxe4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The decision to<strong> <\/strong>publicly disclose the investigations was taken \u201cdue to the significant threat to public safety\u201d and after attempts to address the issue together with the Indian government had not yielded satisfactory results, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme told reporters.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29bg9iz000b3b6mekbasotw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Duheme said that since September last year, there had been \u201cwell over a dozen credible and imminent threats\u201d to the lives of members of the South Asian community, and specifically the \u201cpro-Khalistan movement,\u201d referring to a separatist movement among supporters of Sikh independence.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29bg9iz000c3b6m35emcutr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cDespite law enforcement action, the harm has continued, posing a serious threat to our public safety,\u201d Duheme said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29c4mzm000r3b6mjpflr69a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            He added that the RCMP had found evidence of violent extremism impacting both Canada and India; links tying agents of the government of India to homicides and \u201cviolent acts\u201d in Canada; organized crime targeting Canada\u2019s South Asian community; and interference in democratic processes.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29bg9iz000e3b6mu7j1ztix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cInvestigations have revealed that Indian diplomats and consular officials based in Canada leveraged their official positions to engage in clandestine activities, such as collecting information for the government of India, either directly or through their proxies; and other individuals who acted voluntarily or through coercion,\u201d he said.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29bg9iz000f3b6m4p091vii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            \u201cThe information collected for the government of India is then used to target members of the South Asian community,\u201d Duheme added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29fqfh2000z3b6mf2xwqh9t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Earlier this year, Canada charged several Indian nationals with the alleged murder of Nijjar, a Canadian citizen. At the time, authorities were investigating whether they had ties to the Indian government.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29fuyom00013b6mpx6nb8zv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Nijjar was gunned down by masked men last June outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia. He was a prominent campaigner for a separate Sikh homeland out of India, which would be known as Khalistan and include parts of India\u2019s Punjab state.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29g03xt00013b6m6x4n9vkj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Last September, Trudeau said he had credible information linking the Indian government to the killing of Nijjar. The allegation outraged India, which has forcefully denied the claim, calling it \u201cabsurd.\u201d The diplomatic fallout saw tit-for-tat expulsions of senior diplomats from both countries.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29fuyom00043b6mo2r23qyi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            In its statement Monday, the Indian government said that since Trudeau made those allegations, the Canadian government had \u201cnot shared a shred of evidence\u201d and that recent assertions had also been made \u201cwithout any facts.\u201d    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29fuyom00053b6m9iufs2ll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            The RCMP said Monday it had presented \u201cevidence\u201d to Indian government officials directly. \u201cWe continue to ask that the Indian government support the ongoing investigation in the Nijjar case, as it remains in both our countries\u2019 interest to get to the bottom of this,\u201d Global Affairs Canada added.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29fwzcd00003b6mtrg45dds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Campaigning for the creation of Khalistan has long been&nbsp;outlawed in India,&nbsp;where painful memories of a deadly insurgency by some Sikh separatists continue to haunt many. But it garners a level of&nbsp;public&nbsp;sympathy among some in the Sikh diaspora overseas, where activists protected by free speech laws can&nbsp;more openly demand secession from India.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm29geiox000a3b6mnapt1jd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">            Weeks after Trudeau\u2019s announcement in 2023, the United States&nbsp;accused&nbsp;an Indian government official of&nbsp;being involved in a conspiracy to kill another&nbsp;Sikh separatist,&nbsp;American&nbsp;citizen&nbsp;Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, on&nbsp;US&nbsp;soil.
