{"id":9805,"date":"2024-11-05T15:09:57","date_gmt":"2024-11-05T15:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/05\/worlds-first-wooden-satellite-heads-to-space-in-mars-exploration-test\/"},"modified":"2024-11-05T15:09:57","modified_gmt":"2024-11-05T15:09:57","slug":"worlds-first-wooden-satellite-heads-to-space-in-mars-exploration-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailywashingtoninsider.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/05\/worlds-first-wooden-satellite-heads-to-space-in-mars-exploration-test\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s first wooden satellite heads to space in Mars exploration test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The world&#8217;s first wooden satellite has been launched into space.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite, designed by Japanese researchers, was launched on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-component-name=\"sdc-site-outbrain\" data-target=\"\" data-widget-mapping=\"\" data-installation-keys=\"\">    <\/div>\n<p>Experts hope to test how timber can be used in the exploration of the moon and <strong>Mars<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>LignoSat will be flown to the International Space Station (ISS) on a <strong>SpaceX<\/strong> mission before it&#8217;s released into Earth&#8217;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p>Takao Doi, an astronaut who studies human space activities at Kyoto University, said using renewable materials would allow humans to &#8220;build houses, live and work in space forever&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>Aiming to plant trees and build houses from timber on the moon and Mars in 50 years, Mr Doi&#8217;s team set about designing the <strong>NASA<\/strong>-certified satellite.<\/p>\n<p>Wood is a more durable material in space than it is on Earth as there&#8217;s no water or oxygen that would rot or inflame it, researchers say.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental impact of the satellite at the end of its life is also minimised, burning up in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere with less pollution than metal equivalents.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Metal satellites might be banned in the future,&#8221; Mr Doi said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we can prove our first wooden satellite works, we want to pitch it to <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>&#8216;s SpaceX.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LignoSat is made of honoki, a kind of magnolia tree native to <strong>Japan<\/strong>, and has been made using a traditional Japanese technique without screws or glue.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite will stay in orbit for six months once it&#8217;s deployed.<\/p>\n<p>Kenji Kariya, a manager at the Sumitomo Forestry Tsukuba Research Institute said: &#8220;It may seem outdated, but wood is actually cutting-edge technology as civilisation heads to the moon and Mars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Expansion to space could invigorate the timber industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on sky.com<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world&#8217;s first wooden satellite has been launched into space.
